May Surgeries - check in!

  • Popular Post

Looking for other May 2021 folks to share the journey with! I'm scheduled for May 5th and start my liquid diet in just a few days. Anyone else on/around the same time? What kind of pre-op diet do you have? I admit I'm super nervous about how I'm going to manage the next couple of weeks and keep up my energy at work.

I'm 4 weeks out today and I had a rough day yesterday. I was exhausted when I woke up in the morning. Had no desire to eat or drink and generally felt crappy. At some point in the late afternoon I took two bigger sips of Water and then immediately vomited. It burned like heck, my throat was burning for probably 2 hours afterwards even with drinking more and trying to wash it away.

I'm fairly certain I did not drink enough the day before so I woke up feeling crappy and then continued to not drink well for the first half of the day. I focused on fluids over eating in the afternoon and I feel better today. So I do not recommend even slight dehydration, no fun.

Ugh, I just went through something similar this week. Feeling better today, but it was a rough night/day before. It is definitely a learning curve, living with this small pouch.

I had surgery May 5th; have lost 17 pounds. However, for the last week I’ve had diverticulitis. Maybe it’s the antibiotics, but I am so weak. All I want to do is sleep. This isn’t good… I contacted the clinic. They said it’s because I am not getting enough Protein and calories. They never told me the number of calories to be consumed each day. I’ve been getting 500. They said I need to double that but only eat 3 meals/day. food stays a long time in my pouch, and so far I haven’t been able to eat much at a time. With what they want me to eat, along with the tiny portions only three times a day…. it doesn’t make much sense to me how I will get in 1,000. Anyone else run into this?

I don't understand how they think you can get that many calories in in 3 meals a day. I am still not able to get that many calories throughout the day either, and I am still drinking 1-2 protein shakes a day just to get enough protein. I'm so sorry you've had such a bad time this past week. Diverticulitis is the worst!

1 month update: I lost 34.5 total (since 5/1) and 23.5 since surgery (5/11). I feel great, try to walk about 2 miles a day and do a lot of work around the house, including gardening. I found I can eat almost anything, as long as at each meal I eat 2 oz or less (definitely have to scale everything). I end up eating about 5 meals a day, and I am able to get the 80 grams of protein as I focus a lot on fish. I've adventured to try (in small bite-sized quantities) other things: ground meat/burger (without bun, of course), 1 rib (that was not too great --it's a bit too fatty). Have not really tried raw foods yet, except tomatoes. Have definitely noticed that need to keep drinking to be hydrated. There are some days where I am not as careful and then I need to take 3-4 hours to rehydrate, including my body waking me up during the night to go get water. I am not hungry and it's great! (I used to be sooo hungry before, all the time!) I wonder whether people who never gained weight always have felt like I feel now (with no hunger..): It is very liberating, to be honest, to not have that thing in your stomach and head tell you that you're hungry. Thank you for listening! Hope everyone else is doing well!

Sounds great! Glad to hear you're doing well.

Hi all. Just found this forum and I'm excited to read other people's experiences. I'm coming up on 1 month post surgery. May 18th was my sleeve. I'm currently down about 33 lbs since surgery. My doctor has me eating fish, turkey and cooked vegetables. Amazingly, I've never once vomited after eating and my reflux has been pretty non-existent. The one thing I've found frustrating is getting tired pretty quickly while exercising or doing yard work. Things I used to do before without a problem are really tiring me out. I guess I just have to remember my body is adjusting to the much lower calorie intake, which means less energy for now.

I started my puree phase on Thursday and have tried mashed tuna, soft scrambled eggs, ricotta bake, and a little bit of mashed sweet potatoes so far. I haven't really haven't had too much issues with pain. I try to make sure the food is really blended well. Just of coupleof instances of going a little too fast which I understanding pacing is a learning curve. The one thing I am experiencing after eating is this constant feeling of needing to burp but I really can't. Was wondering if anyone else is going through this? Is it just my stomach adjusting to real food again or something else? It last for about an hour or so after eating and then I can finally burp a few times and it feels better.

I’ve definitely had the burping issue. I think it’s because sometimes I am trying to finish the whole 1/4 cup of food and it’s just too much at that time. My dietitian said it can be a sign I’m just full. Or maybe it’s just because I’m always talking and inhaling too much while I eat ??‍♀️ I’m just glad to hear I’m not the only burper out there ?

I am so looking forward to purée. 3 more days of full fluids to go. Dinner is currently half a premier protein & tomato soup.

Ahhhh! 2 days in to puréed stage…. I’m cutting up a rotisserie chicken for my kids and I just couldn’t resist…. a nibbled on two pretty decent size pieces of the chicken skin! I did chew it thoroughly (I wanted to have that taste in my mouth forever ?). Didn’t feel sick or anything afterwards but when I looked it up my God the protein is at least high but the fat is thru the roof. I caved! This soon! I had to confess. I drank a ton of water afterwards and just made my last meal of the day a little bit of soup with protein powder added. Ugh I’m disappointed in myself ?. I won’t go off the rails or anything I just needed to have a taste ? any encouraging words??

Hi Everyone ?,

I had my surgery on the 24th, I have lost 16lbs in total so far and 1.3lbs last week. However, I am up 1.5lbs since yesterday ?. I am getting 50-55oz of water and do 2 protein shakes a day each one of them is 30gms of protein, regular bowl movement. I am suppose to start soft foods today but, I fear I won't lose any weight if start eating anything at all. What am I doing wrong? The weigh in has me in tears this morning ?. Any suggestions on what I can do to help lose weight ?

Three week stall, look it up!

My doctor's PA made me promise not to weigh until the 5week post op visit. She said otherwise I would break my own heart because weight fluctuates after surgery.

I had surgery the 24th also, I too have only lost 16 lbs. I totally agree with It being the 3 week stall. Follow the program. It will work out! ☺️

Is 16 the magic number? ? I am two weeks post-op today and down 16. Most of that was the first week. My surgeon gave the lecture on it doesn’t happen overnight. You will have stalls. It’s a 12-18 month process.

It's so frustrating though. You do everything right but the scale doesn't show it. Congratulations on your surgery and loss.
