I was never told not to.

Me either and I have the Most Cranky Crabby RNY in history, so if my Endoscopist, my gastroenterologist or surgeon didn't tell me, you should be totally cool. And Precious Pouch won't even tolerate decaf coffee, cottage cheese and bananas, my life is directed by my mini-egg shaped bundle of Gastric tissue and PP is the Empress and Tyrant of Everything. Today she is quiet but when PP isn't Happy, ain't nobody going to be Happy!

I am tolerating it fine,,, I love it on my creamed soups

Michael S ? and may everything Go Well Diet-wise!

I've never heard that one (i.e., to avoid black pepper). I suppose he thinks it'll irritate a healing stomach, although again, I was never told that and have never heard of anyone else being told to avoid it, either.

My doctor never told me to avoid black pepper.

I think I'd ask my doctor to explain why he made this recommendation. A patient is much more apt to follow instructions if they understand why. I suppose it could be the spiciness would irritate your stomach. Might be a stretch, but the ground pepper doesn't dissolve. Maybe he's concerned that a flake will get stuck somehow and irritate things? Weird

I was told to avoid spicy foods..but black pepper to me isn’t spicy. I use it on everything soup and purée related and haven’t had a problem. I think the reasoning is that they don’t want anything to irritate your new stomach or get stuck in a healing suture line. ?‍♀️

I had to avoid black pepper during my 2 week liquid diet, but that was it.
