Sleep study question

Recommended Posts

I have completed all of my insurance appointments...but they called me today and said that I need to complete a sleep study because of the way I answered my questions at first appt. Will I have to get a cpap before surgery if it comes back that I have sleep apnea???

I’m pretty sure you will. If you do have apnea you’ll want the assistance of a cpap in the hospital

I'm guessing yes. They made me bring my CPAP to the hospital with me. They can't take that chance in recovery or during your stay that you'll stop breathing in your sleep.

Since I snored for several years before surgery, I was required to undergo an exam by a neurologist. I arranged an interview, he examine me and came to the determination that I probably had sleep apnea. He requested that I undergo a sleep study to make sure. I declined. I said my reasoning was that in many cases, gastric bypass places this condition into remission. So why undergo the study if the sleep apnea condition will go away after surgery. I told him that if I still snore a few months after surgery, I will undergo the sleep study. He agreed and that gave me the green light to have the surgery.

A few months after surgery, I would wake up in the middle of the night and find my wife hovering over me. I asked her what she was doing. She said I was breathing so quietly, she thought I had died in the night and she was checking to see if I was still alive.

I just did an at home sleep test this past Sunday and waiting on results. I'm fully expecting to be diagnosed with apnea and was given the impression that I will need to use a CPAP right away if it's confirmed. Initially, my DR had me use just on oximeter one night. The results from that were pretty concerning, so then we did the full sleep test kit. I have actually woke to gasping for air many times and regret that I have ignored it knowing that there's something wrong. Ughhhh I can't wait to lose all this extra weight! So many of my health issues should be resolved after significant weight loss.

Hope your sleep test goes well!

I've had 5 sleep studies and have had sleep apnea for years but don't use a CPAP machine. I tried it for a while but it just doesn't work for me. So it's not a guarantee you'll get the machine.

After my first Bariatric appointment my Dr. requested me to have a sleep study because I had told him that I suspected I have sleep apnea. Don't knock this, it usually helps with insurance approval if you do have sleep apnea. I did the sleep study, got a machine and was required to bring it to the hospital when I checked in. I used it for the one night I stayed in the hospital after surgery. They didn't put it on me during recovery, a nurse later that evening helped me get it setup in my room. It was no big deal, and the least of your challenges after this surgery.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
