Question about Fluid Volume

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm in the middle of the pre-approval process and have a question. How can you drink 8 glasses of Water a day if you can only drink 4oz. at a time? Is that only at the beginning, can you drink more later? Also, what about Protein Shakes, do you just drink 4oz. at a time? Thanks in advance for advice!

I recall being told to sip Water and to measure out my liquids to make sure that I got enough. I forget the exact measurement but I used a 30ml medicine cup to sip out of every 15 minutes get my Clear Liquids. The Protein Shake was the same thing in the beginning. It took me over 2 hrs to drink it at first. Now when I mix an 11oz shake with 6 oz of coffee I drink that in about an hour. However, you should ask the doctor how much they want you to drink in an hour.

I'm two years out and I can drink a quart of Water during an hour workout, no issues. It's just at the beginning when you have to sip while your stomach is healing. By 6-8 weeks out, you should be able to drink 8 ounces in about half an hour.

Thank you for your replies. It is a little confusing sometimes, you hear about stretching out your pouch and only drinking a little bit, but there just aren't enough hours in the day to get in all your Fluid. To be honest though, I'm pre-surgery and I don't think I usually come even close to 8 glasses a day.

It's important to note that... for the most part, Water just filters through your pouch/sleeve. If you consume it too quickly it can back up, but if you consume at the same rate that it leaves your stomach, you won't risk any stretching. It's quite easy to get more than enough water a day, you just need to reduce how much you are consuming at a time and increase how often you consume. Just keep a bottle with you at all times and get into the habit of constantly drinking water. Sounds harder than it really is in practice.

I agree with Matt. I’m 3 days post VSG and I haven’t had a problem getting in around 70 ounces a day. My surgeon wants all of his patients to strive for 96 oz per day. Haven’t quite been able to meet that crazy goal haha! But I feel pretty good at 70-ish ounces. And keep in mind that you’re getting hydrating fluids from several sources other than water. I just take small drinks all day long. If I wake up in the middle of the night to use the restroom I try to take a few small drinks at that time as well.

Eventually you can drink larger volumes over longer or shorter periods of time, I'm 8 months post op, I can drink 16 oz in 30 mins casually or 10 mins if I'm thirsty

Hey I found something in the housewares department at Wally World , its. a teensy little measuring cup with the shotglasses, has the gradients marked on it Tablspoons on one side and ounces on the other, okay this is what I find neat, it looks like your glass Pyrex measuring cup, although it is plastic, it has the little pour lip so I think it will be easier to drink from. Since it is plastic, it will be easy to clean and only cost $1,88. So a little FYI for all my bari-buds!☕

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
