Thinking strongly about Gastric Bypass

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, it has been ages since I have been on here! I haven't been on here since I lost my Lap-Band. I'm at my highest weight EVER! Ever since I had my son a year ago, I've been thinking STRONGLY about Gastric Bypass surgery. I was too scared to move forward and make an appointment to see my surgeon. These bigger weight loss surgeries scare me so much, but I feel it will be a great decision for me because it will be permanent for one. I'm so sick of yo-yoing. I want to be healthy, unfortunately I just need the tool to help me.

I'm so scared due to the fact that my organs will be cut and rearranged. I fear dying on that operating table. I fear dying sometime after surgery (eventhough I know I can just drop dead anytime). I will forever know that my organs aren't the same as the person next to me. (I know it's not important. My mind is weird lol)

I'm just so nervous and scare and I havent even made an appointment yet. I guess I just want some positive feedback and support.

Firstly, it's super ok to be nervous or scared about it. I know I was!
Secondly... I wish I would have just done the bypass back in 2011 when I had my band put in... all that BS because I was afraid of the commitment to the bypass.

I too was concerned with permanent changes. And rightfully so. But I'll tell you right now, after surgery, I couldn't tell you if my intestines were really altered or not. Just can't feel any changes. I'm losing weight, I feel great, I can eat about as much as I could with the band when it was working as expected. So I *KNOW* it was done... their just isn't any sensation of a change.

I was afraid of the "Death on the table" thing too... so much so that I drafted up documents for family members just in case. So I could say my goodbyes if need be.

Overall, I knew I needed something that would "work" and had more feedback (dumping) if I went off the path.
I'm 3 months out, down 58ish lbs, body fat is down like 7%, I'm in the gym daily. I eat so much better now. I really wish I had done this sooner.

I agree. It's perfectly normal to have all those feelings. It means you're taking it seriously. I had all those feelings before my RnY bypass last year, and I also had all those feelings before I had my hysterectomy 15 years ago! I ended up having an emergency hysterectomy, so that choice was less scary in a way. I needed it to save my life, and there was no more thinking about it!

But at 57, with high blood pressure, borderline diabetes, joint problems and Barrett's esophagus, my health was also quite precarious before this surgery, too. I'm glad I did it. I didn't have any complications, but those first few months were tough as I had to relearn how to eat and form a new "relationship" with food. It only took three months for my blood pressure and blood sugar to normalize and to no longer need the acid reflux medications. My joint issues are greatly improved because I can move more and I get more exercise, which reduces inflammation. I've lost 105 lbs as of this morning and I'm still losing, albeit slower than I did in the beginning. I feel very lucky.

My advice, for what it's worth, is do your research, and seek the very best medical team you can find and afford. Just those two things will ease your mind alot. Then you have to reach a point where the risks involved (surgery always involves risks) are outweighed by the consequences of doing nothing. And that point is different for everyone.

Good luck. You will make the decision that's best for you, at the time that it works for you.

Many years ago I had wanted a lap band because of all the same fears of bypass. Insurance wouldn't cover it so I just didn't do anything. Pretty sure that was a blessing in disguise. I just had bypass 5 days ago and I almost had a breakdown in preop because I was scared. I got through it and now I'm doing really good. I wish I hadn't waited so long. I think with any major life altering surgery it's normal to be scared. Go to a seminar. If you change your mind it's OK!

That's why I want it now! I wish I had gotten it done when I saw my surgeon in 2014 when we discussed surgery options! I would have been at my goal a long time ago and I'd be pretty healthy and I probably wouldn't have a thyroid problem!! (Found that out in November 2014) who knows.

I really dont want to change my mind. I want to do all of the things I want to do without my weight/size being the reason why I dont do those things.

Tomorrow, I hope to tell my mother that I want to get WLS and hope that she would support me and I'm sure she will. Then make an appointment asap!

Scared to tell her too.

My major concerns are just dying, on the table or post op and just the fact that the organs get cut and rearranged, but like you guys say, you dont even know the difference so I'm pretty sure I'll be just fine.

Don't get hung up on the Coulda Woulda Shoulda of life. You have,to step, out strongly and learn to walk, than run, the a dance,in the sunlight. Slow, Steady. and Sincere wins every time.👣😛

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
