8 months post op feel like failure

I’m afraid I have truly failed . I can eat a whole burger or sandwich, burrito with no problems. I made the mistake and started drinking sodas for a time. There are times where I feel full, but not enough. I’m so down that I let myself go back to my old eating habits. Now I feel like it’s too late and there’s no hope. My starting weight day of surgery was 268. I fluctuate now between 208 and 211. I have since quit my sodas but my mind always craves foods I should not have. It’s so hard!!!

Why not do a pouch reset diet?

Hi,

I know how you feel but I stopped it before I gained any weight. I see I can eat more and the stomach stretched. You have to think why you did this in the 1st place. Don't ever think your a failure. Just go back to your good habits after the surgery which is what I did. I vowed to myself that I will never gain this weight back. Just try to be positive and reset yourself. Remember it's just a tool. I worked for Jenny Craig for 11 years and went up and down. It did give me good knowledge to work it. Good Luck

Unfortunately this surgery does not reroute our thinking. Most of us have problems with our eating habits that led us to be obese in the first place. Along with our diets, we have to do some work to address those problems too. Don’t be so hard on yourself, you aren’t a failure. You might try to understand what is driving you to eat these foods. Try healthier versions of your favorite foods. You can make healthy burgers and burritos if you cook them and control what goes in them!

It’s such a long road to get these surgeries, don’t let your hard work go to waste! You can do this we are here to support you and I’m sure there is a support group near you in person as well!

The fact is that the surgery doesn't guarantee weight loss or meeting goal. You have to redefine your relationship with food, follow your plan, and decide what is more important -- food or your health. Even at 16 months post-op and below goal, I still won't eat more than 25g of carbs in a day -- no bread, no Pasta, no potatoes. Food is fuel to me. I had to do that to be successful, and that success was and is so much more important to me than any type of food.

As the others said, getting back to basics is probably your best course of action. But you have to make the decision that you want to be successful. And that's going to mean putting away the burgers, sandwiches, and burritos.

Thank you for words of encouragement and not judging. It was not until this surgery that I realized how much I use food for a vice and comfort. I felt physically tortured with the diet guidelines after surgery. I got depressed and actually started chewing and spitting out food. It’s terrible how my emotional issues draw me too food. It’s been a long process I originally weighed 325 lbs got down to 260 on my own. But kept fluctuating so had the surgery. You would think 50 lbs would not be so hard to get to!!!

I wish people that call weight loss surgery the "easy way out" could read these comments! You're not a failure hun. I know I'm going to really struggle. Sometimes it's harder to dust yourself off and start again than it is to start but if you really try i believe you will do it! [emoji123] [emoji123]

Many of us have issues with using food for comfort or dealing with emotional issues as a contributing factor that led to our obesity. Part of this process really needs to be finding another way to handle emotions without turning to food. Whether we are eating out of stress, boredom, loneliness, depression, anxiety, etc. these things need to be figured out and dealt with or those of us with these issues run the risk of reverting back to these habits post surgery.

If this is happening to you, why not consider keeping a food diary? Write down the food you are craving but also how you are feeling and what you are doing when these cravings occur. I also think if you are to the point of chewing food and spitting it out that you should seek therapy. I mean no harm by this statement but it seems a red flag to me as a behavior.

We are all fighting this fight together, so keep on fighting for your health. You are worth it and you deserve to be happy with yourself.

Many of us have been there. Soda was so hard for me to give up. This whole process is very hard because we don't get brain surgery to go with our stomachs. You might want to talk to a therapist because they really can help with the food relationship.

It is my opinion that we need to eat pure clean healthy foods only BEFORE SURGERY. We need to stop eating empty carbs beforehand. Eating sugar makes you crave sugar. I wish some docs didn’t tell people to drink sweetened Protein Drinks, jellos, and other foods that keep people craving empty carbs and sweets. It’s sad. I’m not sure you can get fat just eating healthy Proteins and fats, with some veggies, seeds, and Beans thrown in. Not after WLS, at least. If you don’t eat sweet tasting things (even with fake sugars) after surgery, you won’t crave them. No breads, no tortillas, no Desserts, etc. hard to do on a dime but if people on;y were given that wonderful advice before surgery, it would give them months and months without sugary flavor, and they wouldn’t crave or want it any more.

Dr. Umbach in Vegas has such a good nutritionist. It’s one reason to choose him. I’m so glad she set me on this journey the right way. We have, from the surgery, the tool of Portion Control. That is all it gives us. We still have to add other tools, like learning WHAT TO EAT and what not to. And then add activity to get strong and fit.

To the OP, you can do this. It will work for you. I know the portion control gets looser with time, I’m 6 months out and I can tell I can put more in my stomach now. So I have to make sure I don’t put bad carbs in. Good luck to you getting the ball rolling again.

      Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
