Ok. So this is very personal and I really am very upset and disappointed in my surgeon. I have tried for 10 years to get pregnant with my 2nd husband who is the love of my life.

I had nightmares before my surgery. The surgeon in the dream would always tell me I had five minutes to decide between weight loss surgery or pregnancy. In the dream I would always try to say pregnancy but the anesthesia kicked in before I could answer.

I am now 3 weeks post op and just found out I am 5-6 weeks pregnant. I am horrified. After 2 Catscans, anesthesia and pain meds.... I am pregnant! Why wouldn't they do a blood test or urine before the surgery? They told me they did a beta blood test but the specialist says that's impossible.

Heartbroken!

I am sorry that things have gone this way, and I am sure it is not ideal. Do you have a good NUT to help you through the process? sometimes these things just happen. I would think from the numbers you gave it is very possible that any pregnancy test would have shown negative at the time of surgery and yet, here you are. because the way the "weeks" of pregnancy are counted from your last cycle, you would have just been making the babe around surgery time.

Let us know how you are doing.

If is any concelation there is a 6 or 8 week period where the baby is protected, especially from medicines.

I am sorry this happened this way. It is going to be tough but it will be worth it. Keep us updated.

This same exact thing happened to my bestie after her surgery 13 years ago. She was pregnant during her surgery and didn't find out until a couple of weeks later. She has a happy, healthy, goofy girl. She did have some issues with dehydration, but keep close to your nut. Congrats!

This happen to my sister just diffrent type of surgery(gallbladder) but everything when well my niece is A beautiful healthy child try not to stress so much everything would be great

I can't believe your surgeon let this happen. The day of my surgery while I was in prep they had me do a pregnancy test even though I told them there was no chance because we had been using protection. She still made me test. If there are any issues (God willing there won't be) I would think your surgeon could be held liable.

Those two are blessings in and of themselves. Being with the person who you can publicly say without reservation as being the love of your life......amazing.....wonderful....POWERFUL. To be able to have a child together.......divinely powerful.

Everything else quickly becomes hurdles to work through.....obstacles an pitfalls to navigate around.

I am surely not making light of these obstacles......BUT......they can be overcome.

Your sleeve will tolerate a wide ranging diet and you will go onto motherhood as you've wanted to.

The timing may be far from ideal......but you know you have great love for and from your mate and that will be a source of strength for you throughout the time ahead.

I'm praying for you it all turns out wonderful. Sometimes, life is just messed up. I truly hope this is the godsend you deserve after struggling so long and you end up with a healthy baby, healthy life, and a new beginning a year from now.

Not that you wouldn't adhere to a healthy post-op diet, but man, there's nothing like pregnancy to give you laser-like focus for the health of your baby. You'll do fantastic, I'm 1000% positive, after all you have been through.

It does feel like you are holding your breath with every blood test, amnio, ultrasound. I don't think the low-grade stress goes away until that baby is in your arms.

When can the doctors do tests to see if anything is going on? Any ultrasounds planned? Or is it just wait and pray for the next 9 months?

I am sorry and my heart goes out to u during this time....I am a firm believer that in the end what will be, will be...I know this is different but pls understand where i find my belief in this...In 2007 i had the Mirena put in and in 2009 out of nowhere i was nauseous, i mean sick, i swore it was the flu but no it wasnt, i was pregnant...If i remember correctly there is a 2% chance this can happen and it had chosen to happen to me...I was in shock, i didnt know if having that and getting pregnant would cause any defects in the baby, u know its such a critical time and on top of that in my mind i felt as tho i had already lost the baby because i knew the Dr was going to have to remove the IUD :0( I went in and discussed it with my dr and had it removed...i told myself if she was meant to be here, she will be and nothing would interrupt that plan, if there were any longterm issues because of this, we would get through it...And sure enough she is 6yrs old today :0) and my everything...She is happy, healthy and i wouldnt have changed any part of the process because she is a fighter, a strong little girl, was then and is now....I hope sharing that gives u something to hold onto in thought...Sending my prayers during this time of heartache....

I worked in pre-op/PACU for over eight years before transferring to an oncology clinic 2 years ago (my old lady job). The urine hcg tests that are typically used in pre-op (as do most) have a window during which time a false negative is entirely possible. Even the NIH recognizes there is a small possibility that the blood test can give a false negative as they recommend repeating in a week if the blood test is negative but pregnancy is still expected so I don't get why your specialist (I'm assuming you mean ob/gyn) says it is impossible! So sorry this happened to you! If it's something you constantly wonder about, it's easily settled by requesting copies of your lab results from the hospital. A point of care urine test may not show up on a lab report...some systems point of care tests are documented just in the chart, but a blood test will be on a lab report. In the meantime, YOU'RE PREGNANT! After thinking it would NEVER happen! That is joyous and exciting!!!! Congratulations!
