Fat Doctor

In preparing for surgery, every evening consists of research for me. Whether it be browsing threads on BP, watching videos on YouTube (actual surgeries & success stories, etc) , following WLS people on Instagram for meal and excercise ideas, watching My 600 lb Life, and now Fat Doctor.

I just have to say- Fat Doctor hits home the most for me. Dr. Summers is my favorite part of it all! His outlook on obese patients is heartfelt. I absolutely love to listen to him talk about the obese and what contributed to their weight gain. He also discusses how society views "fat people" and the prejudice they experience. Fat shaming is a real thing and I know we have all experienced it on at least one occasion. I guess I respect this doctor more because I have been to doctors who chalked excercise and dieting up to being a cake walk and not understanding my lack of success or believing that I was fully dedicated to the program. I have PCOS and while I don't blame it 100% for my weight, it does play a significant role in my inability to lose weight. My younger brother who pitches in the minor league (very fit & healthy) thought something similar about me and my efforts. So when he was home in the off season last year, we walked every morning, went grocery shopping and cooked together (meal prepped for the entire week). He quickly realized that my body did not react to clean eating and excercise like it should and changed his entire perception. For the record, he was always loving and never disrespectful when addressing my weight. He just thought that I did not know how to determine exactly what my body needed to succeed. So, it's nice to see that Summers recognizes that there are multiple factors.

I highly recommend this show to everyone! I watch it on Hulu and I'm on season 3 out of...6 I believe? It truly does show the good, the bad and the ugly (and I mean...the UGLY). It's filmed in England so it took me a quick second to get used to "stones" over "pounds."

Oh....and it doesn't hurt that Dr. Summers is nice on the eyes ;)

They explained that in a few episodes. Basically since they are operating on the intestines, it isn't a sterile environment anyway. Once they cut the intestines, bye bye sterile operating room. Especi

@@sassyfrass23 I did watch them. They are heart breaking to me. I'm just so sad that they are all in such bad shape before they have the surgeries.

Jean Marie is my favorite episode. She just has this joy that is incredible and the pic they painted of her was just beautiful.

full episodes are available on you tube and hulu.

I believe that is my second favorite one! I still loved Daniel. He was so stinkin precious. Jean Marie definitely had a beautiful personality and challenged me to love myself more!!

I think I will watch both those episodes tonight.

I rewatched Daniels episode. The Dr told him he had a 1/10 chance of dying.

I feel so angry with the local NHS people for denying his surgery for 7 years. During that 7 years he just go sicker and heavier.

Daniel is a good example of why it is so important to get the weight off as soon as possible before people get sicker.

@@OutsideMatchInside that's exactly the point my surgeon made. I'm 27 and right at a BMI of 40.5. I asked if I was jumping too soon or too young to have RNY. Aside from my weight and prediabetes, I'm fairly healthy on paper. His immediate response was absolutely not! In his opinion, I'm the ideal candidate for surgery because of my lack of health issues. My chances for promising results and less complications is ideal and he'd rather get his hands on me now rather than when I'm 50 and have already had a heart attack or other issues from obesity present themselves. My daddy had 3 heart attacks, his final one requiring 5 bypasses. All of his siblings (6) have had heart attacks and then multiple family members on my mom's side have had them as well.

Did they say what their reason was for denying his surgery? That is so incredibly sad and still breaks my heart for his Mom.

They considered the surgery cosmetic, when he first asked for it. That time would have been around 2000, because I believe was aired at the end of 2007. In 2000, RNY was still a fairly exotic surgery to a lot of insurance.

Ah- I see. I keep forgetting that it's not a recent or current show. And to think about the Americans whose insurance doesn't even offer coverage. So so sad.

I'm watching Hulu through my cable provider and at the bottom, it has the original air date.

I'm watching Daniel's episode now

I'm watching Daniel's episode now

......well, @@Daveo ? :'(

I watched all of Fat Doctors back when I was first looking into WLS and shortly after my sleeve surgery. I just recently got turned onto another British WLS show called "Weight Loss Ward", if anyone is interested. It's on YouTube. Not sure how many episodes there are. I'm only on episode two, but someone else on here mentioned the show last week, so I just started watching.

So far I have only found 4 episodes of weight loss ward on YouTube.

Let me know if you find more! I really like the show
