2 day liquid diet before surgery?!

Recommended Posts

Last month I had my 2nd out of 6 consult and I asked about the pre op diet and the surgeon said due to my weight (220lbs) he will only require me to do a 2 day liquid diet before surgery. Does that even sound right? I was expecting him to say 2 to 3 weeks.

All doctor's are different. You can talk to 10 people and all will have different pre-op diets as well as different post-op diets.

My instructions pre-op - be caffeine free and 2 weeks prior to surgery, have 3 Protein shakes and 1 meal (4 ounces of Protein and a veggie). The night before surgery, the surgeon told my husband and me to go out and have whatever we wanted for dinner. I thought he was joking - he wasn't. He told me I had done great on the pre-op and that the only restriction was "don't go overboard on the red meat and no all you can eat buffets" (we were in Vegas).

Post op - my surgeon was very progressive in introducing foods…I could have a couple of tablespoons of "slip and slide" food the day after surgery (scrambled egg, yogurt, anything that would slip off a plate). When I got home from Vegas and had my 2 week follow up with my local doc, I actually regressed to an all liquid diet.

You'll do fine - be happy your doc said only 2 days…pre-op diets are very difficult! :-)

My surgeon requires 1 day of liquid diet beforehand - just the day before. This is standard with all his patients. Good luck!

2 day pre-op diet means that he wants you to burn your stored sugar levels in your liver to shrink it somewhat. When you diet or fast your body burns the stored sugar in your liver called glycogyn first. Most people have a 2-3 day supply of this sugar that has to be used up first before they begin to burn fat.

However, and I'm saying this from observation, those patients who go on at least a 2 week pre-op diet appear to be more successful and lose more weight than those who do not. When you go on a 2 week pre-op diet you lose a lot of weight before your surgery and you are also over your carb withdrawals.

I was about 235 pounds and I think my requirement was the same, along with a colon prep. I WAS required to lose 10 pounds between consult and the final pre-op appointment for liver shrink, but there was no required "diet", just the required weight loss.

I was told to go on a liquid diet 1 week before my surgery due to my high BMI (44). No specific plan was recommended by my surgeon - he left it up to my nutritionist. 2 days to go!

I totally agree with this observation. People in my Facebook group who didn't do a 2 week pre-op diet have not lost as much as those who have. Do a 2 week, pre-op diet, you will be glad you did.

7 days prior to surgery full liquids then 2 days prior clear liquids. I'm on day 2!

Hang in there, it will get easier.

7 days of liquid diet for me and day before surgery clear liquids only. today is day number 1 and all i can think about is something substantial. like not even anything that is a splurge. i would settle for a piece of turkey or a few green Beans at this point. i sure hope this starts to pass once i am used to it!

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
