Had my sleeve done 8/3. When I came home I started my Protein Drinks, Water, broth, etc. Every time I have Protein I get severe nausea and vomiting. I cut out protein yesterday and it was the only day I felt "normal." Tried shake this morning, using water, and I'm suffering the same misery. I see my doctor for my follow up tomorrow, but in the meantime I am depressed and second guessing myself. I feel like this is going to be my new life and it's torture. On a positive I'm down 15 lbs, but who wouldn't be if all you have is water and you vomit at least once a day. :(

Does your Protein supplement have either a lot of sugar or some form of lactose? It seems unlikely that your issue is Protein and more that it is a problem with one of the ingredients. For example, I am almost 2 years out and I can't drink regular milk, eat most cheese, eat things with too much sugar, eat anything that has oil in it, or sometimes keep solid Proteins (chicken, steak, etc) down without throwing up. I have found though that 90% of the time I barf it is either because there was something on the food (a salad dressing, or it was cooked in oil) or it had some form of lactose in it. My sleeve was a little B from the very first day but she gradually got pickier, which is not the norm. It takes time to figure out what does and doesn't work for your sleeve and for a lot of people the sensitivity of the first few weeks goes away when you are back on normal food.

Have you tried the Special K protein Water? No lactose, minimal sugar, and shouldn't make you sick. Almost everyone feels awful the first few weeks. I distinctly remember sobbing on the phone to my friend that I had ruined my life after surgery. Turns out I didn't ruin my life and now my life is very happy and normal. Keep the faith that this will all be worth it in the end.

It's definitely normal to experience "buyer's remorse" in the early days, especially if you are dealing with any sort of complication. My suspicion is that it is some other ingredient in your Protein Shakes that's making you sick, not the Protein itself. Hopefully you can work with your doctor tomorrow to figure out what's up. Hang in there! I have no doubt that you WILL get a handle on this and be able to get some protein in eventually. There is a lot of trial and error through this whole process. It sucks that you've hit a road block THIS early, but I'm sure it is only temporary.

My husband had the sleeve one month before me and it was smooth sailing for him. So I feel even worse about these issues I'm having. He has been EXTREMELY supportive, but I have that stupid "WHY ME" running through my head. Thanks for the words of encouragement

Oh dear, I thought the first few weeks was Clear Liquids only? If not, that could be the culprit. I have done a lot of reading, and I heard of someone else having this issue and it was due to drinking non clear liquids too soon.

@CocoBelle Clear liquids is usually for a couple of days after surgery, then its full liquids if appropriate... which can include, milk, shakes, thin yogurt, stock cubes, fruit squash, Soups with no bits etc etc.

@@lillie1117 - Hope the GP visit goes well and you resolve the issue :)

Have you tried Syntrax Nectars?

What shakes are you taking? They they thick or thin. Are they cold? I wouldn't drink anything cold at first, it has to be room temp or warm.

I only had to be on clear liquids the first few days, then I was allowed first stage full liquids (Protein shakes and drinkable yogurt), then strained cream Soups.

Give your stomach a chance to heal and stay on the broth and Jello for now.

Well had first appt today. Finally got some Zofran. They did move me to pureed foods. But if I can't tolerate, then back to liquids I go. NUT is baffled as to the Protein intolerance. She reluctantly switched me to a protein blend. She thinks I may have an intolerance to the whey isolate. Fingers crossed this is the beginning of good days ahead.

@lillie1117 be sure you are not having anything you are not supposed to too soon. This will definately cause dumping syndrome. It gets better, really and you will be just fine.

I was sleeved on 8.7 and had to try different things after surgery. My pre-op diet was sugar free CIB with Protein five times per day. Since the surgery I have been having watery stools. I switched from the sugar free CIB with whey Protein to Fairlife milk. That seemed to help. I had a sugar free pudding last night and had the watery stools again this morning. I'm beginning to wonder if I can't tolerate the sugar free products like I used to. Has anyone experienced that?

Other than the stool issue I feel great. Stopped pain meds on day 2 post-op, driving and running errands, walked at the gym yesterday and today for over 30 minutes.

Thanks!

-C

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
