Getting Enough Water

I am struggling to get my water in. And I know half the time I feel hunger it is probably thirst. I flavor it but that's not helping. Any other tips/tricks? Also, at 4 weeks out, it feels like I can drink a lot at once. Is that normal?

  • Sip... don't gulp. Keep a cup next to you at all times. I NEVER drank Water before my surgery - it was always soda. I'm up to 2 gallons a day. I flavor it also and would not be able to do it witho

Try using tepid water instead of cold. And use the water-enhancer drops, as well. These 2 tricks really did it for me. Good luck!

I use Mio or Crystal Light drops in my Water. I do drink with a straw. I spend 2 hours a day in the car. It is much easier to drink with a straw while driving. I have not had a problem with drinking from a straw.

I also love the Chick Fil A diet lemonade. I buy it by the gallon and water it down. I don't drink nearly enough if I try to drink plain water.

KingMoose- I know there was a woman that drank a large amount of water as part of a radio station contest and she died from it. She drank 2 gallons in 3 hours.

So she drank a large amount in a short time, did not pee and was not exercising so was not sweating out some of it. So yes you can drink too much water but I don't know where the tipping point is.

As far as really drinking too much Water, I talked to my NUT he said there is no upper limit if you are exercising and sweating a lot drink as much as you need.

I heard about that, that was just stupid on everybody involved. When I was in the Army on training days it was not unusual for me to drink 6 or more gallons of water a day, but, I was sweating my ass off in southern Georgia in the Summer. So heat and humidity play a big part of how much you should drink as well.

So today it was 95 degrees where I live. Before surgery when I was out in the heat I would chug water, but, now I can only sip. But, still managed to down 1 1/2g of liquids today.

Soy silly question is we are supposed to get at least 64oz in a day is there a too much point?

I've read you should drink 1/2 to 1 ounce of water for every pound you weigh. If you live somewhere hot or are very active, aim for the upper end. Drinking too much water can dilute the sodium in your body which can cause problems like nausea, confusion, headaches etc. Low sodium (hyponatremia) can be very serious.

I read in my book that you also get water from food. like chicken is 60% water, but we are eating less and therefore need more fluids.

I am also having a terrible time getting enough fluids. I am taking meds that make me nauseated. Water makes it worse and flavored waters have not helped. Today even flat diet ginger ale caused vomiting. I really hate Gatorade, it tastes like flavored sweat to me. I like real lemonade or limeade with a little coconut sugar but can't do that all the time. It's a problem.

I'm sorry you're having such a hard time. I hope you find something that works for you! :)

@@Swampdoggie Oh girl! I'm sorry you are struggling with this. I hope you find something to help you get those liquids down. What about SF popsicles, broth, etc.....the stuff we had pre surgery?

@@wannaBthinsoon good ideas. I'm having a tough week.indulged in some bad old habits to relieve the nausea but not feeling better. Should have known. Gottamgetmit back together and starting from scratch is a good idea. Thanks!

I had myself a little pity party today, woe is me, why can't I kck this damn disease, why am I in so much pain and how can water make me sick? I gotta get back on the straight and narrow so I can continue to strive toward my goal. I've been eating too many calories for the past few days, I HATE to be hungry, but thus is the first time I overdid with naughty foods. Bleh? I need to shake it off!

You got this!! And we're all here for support!

I stopped drinking pretty much everything else. I drink water first thing when I wake up. I drink coffee but not every day. I gave up soda and rarely drink fruit juices. I buy bottled water, keep it chilled and always have a bottle with me. If I'm not eating I'm sipping. When the bottle is empty, I fill it up and start again. My palette has changed since I quit sodas so I don't often grave something sweet. I'm allergic to artificial sweeteners and food dyes, so no enhancers for me. I go through 2 -3 20 or 24 ounce bottles a day.

@@BLERDgirl

If you DO want a little flavor, but no sweetener or colors, try using extracts (not the artificial ones). I like peppermint, lemon, orange, but there are also almond, rum, maple.....lots of flavors. I use a tootpick, dip it about an inch in the bottle, then swish it in the water bottle (with water, of course!). A little goes a long ways, so be careful!

When I'm not getting my water down, I have mixed in about 1/2 cup pedialyte with a big glass of water

It seems to get me through with a bit of flavor and a little help with dehydration... Might ask the doc if that is ok for you. Good luck

I bought two 24-ounce Tervis Tumblers (and handles) at Bed, Bath & Beyond; one for work and one for home. At least 45 minutes after Breakfast I fill one up with sugar-free, decaf Crystal Light (or generic) iced tea (Mio works too) and sip it all morning, finishing up at least 30 minutes before lunch. At least 45 minutes after lunch, I fill another and sip it all afternoon. Then, at least 45 minutes after dinner I fill my last one at home and sip it all evening. That's 72+ ounces of Fluid every day! If I have to go somewhere, I bring my tumbler in the car with me. And if I'm hungry and it's not mealtime or snacktime, I drink even more. Remember, after weight loss surgery, hunger is usually thirst in disguise. If I'm going to a casual party where there won't be anything "appropriate" for me to drink, I bring along more Crystal Light in a cooler. Between the iced tea, coffee (yeah, I know), and my Protein shake, I'm easily getting in 120 oz. of fluid per day. Try to make it a daily routine to help you meet your fluid goals every day. Good luck!!!
