Since the lounge description says it can be off topic I am wondering if anyone out there is as sad as I am that Leonard Nimoy died today. I discovered Star Trek at 7 yrs of age, it came on CBS right after the news at 11;30 on Friday nights, and My Mom and Dad allowed me to sit up and watch it, and Nimoy's Spock was the character that drew me to the show right away, I am not a Trekkie in the sense that I go to comic con or know the number of episodes, I just loved the show and loved the actor, he will be missed by me, I feel as if I lost a childhood friend who grew up with me. RIP Leonard Nimoy Set phasers to Weep.

I feel the same. I don't usually pay much attention to celebrity deaths, but this one was tough. I grew up watching Star Trek and all the movies. He was an absolute icon, and will be missed.

@@Babbs Thanks I am the only one at home today who had a good cry over it, I feel a little lonely with my feelings.

It's OK to feel however you feel. I don't think much of 'celebrities' who pass away but twice, I've been deeply affected by the passing of someone famous. First was Lucille Ball. I grew up watching Lucy reruns and was just so sad when she died. The second death was Ann Bancroft. I loved her movies and how much she and Mel Brooks loved each other even though she was so sophisticated and beautiful and he was neither of those things to say the least.

If Leonard Nimoy's passing affects you, just own it and feel bad about it. And as far as I'm concerned, the man truly did live long and prospered. Not a bad epitaph if you ask me.

@@amponder, you are not alone. I remember how much Star Trek meant to me back then, and to me, Spock was the main character. I was never a Kirk girl. (I don't think there were any Kirk girls at my school.) Leonard Nimoy at first wanted to outgrow the Spock character and leave him behind, but he later came to understand how positive an influence Spock was on American culture. I don't think any other actor could have brought Spock to life as he did. He has left a legacy that many will appreciate for years to come.

Feel what you feel! Nimoy was a total icon and it is truly sad.

It was very sad to hear this news yesterday. I did not realize he was 83, so it did come as a shock to me and my husband. He was such an iconic personality and he will be missed.

It sounds corny, but Star Trek changed the world. I think I watched in reruns but I had a crush on Pavel Checkov character, but Spock was my hero. He was my idea of an adventuresome scientist, loyal and loving friend. I often wonder if part of the appeal to the character was the emotional control. My father behaved like a bratty 2 year old, so the idea of a man who was just so...steady.. it was amazing to me as a child. I never trusted that womanizing Kirk dude..Haha...kind of high drama if you ask me.

One of the things I loved most about "Star Trek" -- in addition to how it celebrated the adventurous human spirit -- was how well the four principals who were so different from one another managed to work together so well and "fill gaps." Together, Kirk, Spock, Doc, Scotty made a winning team.

Likewise, the diversity of the ship's entire crew -- men, women, people of color, people of different species -- reflected our hopes that humanity can evolve beyond tribal loyalties to a culture of inclusion that takes us to a higher place where no man has gone before.

Now I'm even sadder. I was just reading up about him, and one of his biggest contributions was for women's issues. Specifically equal pay and body acceptance. Here's a quote:
"The average American woman weighs 25% more than the models selling the clothes. There is a huge industry around selling women ways to get their bodies closer to the fantasy 'ideal' "
He also personally fought to make sure Nichelle Nichols (Uhura) receive equal pay when he learned she wasn't paid as much as everyone else on the show.

The man was a cool dude.

LLAP: Trekki that I am that caught my eye......I am sad....*sob* I loved him, he fought for rights & I thought he was so talented and of course Spock...how can one not love Spock? He was an amazing actor & person. I am a huge Trekkie...

Star Trek represents what I wish the world were more like, more accepting...at peace, and the Prime Directive...
