I want to be away from my family as little as possible. I will do anything and everything I can (follow orders, etc) to go home asap, but I have no idea what is normal for RNY surgery. The hospital I'm looking at does use the DaVinci robot, which is supposed to cut your hospital stay, but I don't know what that adds up to. I will be attending an informational session soon. This is one of my biggest concerns, and thought you all could help me out.

I realize it seems silly, but although the teenager won't miss me, I've never been away from my little ones overnight. Youngest is 2 and still sometimes wakes up in the night wanting a drink, or to be settled down by mama. I know my husband can handle it, but still. I honestly just hate hospitals. I even had homebirths with the last two kids, to avoid being in one, lol.

So...is the idea of just one night in the hospital realistic at all? I'm 38 yrs old, almost 39. Healthy for the most part, BMI of 40. Only complications are GERD, joint pain, etc.

My provider mandated 2 nights stay, even with the robot.

One night rny discharged 5pm the next evening

I was home in 48 hours and back to work in 1 week (by choice) I had no pain at all.

I don't know if anyone who only stayed one night.

I stayed one night. Surgery started at 1pm on a Tuesday and I was home in bed by 7pm Wednesday. That's the standard operating procedure at the Center of Excellence unit I worked with.

My surgery was 0800 Monday and I went home Tuesday 600 pm. I felt fine at the time, but ended up having to be readmitted Wednesday because of bloody diarrhea. I know its hard to be away from family, but it also sucks to leave too early and be readmitted.

Thank you all for sharing. Sounds like 2 is more common, but some places do one night. This surgery would be at a Center of Excellence.

Everyone pain is different. My cousin keft the night OF her RNY but me, I had to stay from monday-thursday due to the bad gas and stomach pains. I just came home yesterday. I was so miserable being away from my husband and children but he made me stay a extra night to feel better. See how you feel first then take it from there. Good luck

I believe 2 nights should be expected. Like someone mentioned, it is better to be safe than have to be readmitted.

For something this important, I imagine I can handle two nights. I'd prefer one, and to heal at home, but I get it. I'll hope, but not expect to spend less than 2 nights.

I was in on a Tues and home on a Fri (extra day due to not eating and drinking what was required before you could leave). I have gastroparesis and I couldn't eat or drink anything. I just wasn't ready till that 3rd day. So your body will tell you when it is time to go home. Don't rush it. You just might end up back in dehydrated or with complications and then you are away from home more than you wanted to begin with! I hope this helps.

I was supposed to be one night. I was there four days from an infection caused by the Foley catheter. I was not prepared for four days but thankful I had so much help from the nurses. My husband and kids were at the hospital everyday too! ????

Sleeve patients have a shorter stay then RNY patients. I can't imagine my hospital/doctor (also Center of Excelkence)allowing me to leave the day after that surgery. I understand you not wanting to be away from your family, but your health needs to be your priority after this surgery. Ask your surgeon what their experience and expectations are for RNY.
