Catheter?....

Recommended Posts

My sleeve date is Dec.16 and I know it sounds crazy but I am nervous about getting a catheter during surgery. Dr said they put in in once I'm knocked out and take it out before I wake up, but just the thought makes me cringe. Did any of you guys have this done?

Hi Tim....I had a cath placed that was in until the next day. It's not fun but it's no big deal. If they remove it when you wake up, even easier. :-)

You're not being crazy. I was nervous about everything; the tube down my throat, being nauseous or throwing up after surgery...but once I got into the operating room (I actually walked into the operating room), I don't remember anything. I got a patch behind my ear for nausea plus something in the IV. Don't remember anything in my throat at all, wasn't even that sore. A few days later felt like a sore throat but it was mild compared to what I imagined. If you have a good doctor and are going to a good hospital, try not to worry. I read so many horror stories that I thought I was going to cancel the surgery but so glad i went through with it. I did gain 12.5 lbs from the Fluid but lost that within a week and I'm down 21 lbs in one month and off 2/3 of my meds. So happy I had this done and you will be too! Good Luck!

Hey Tim, don't worry about it too much. It's standard surgical procedure. I had mine in until the next day post-op. It's just no big deal. Didn't even hurt that much when they removed it, just a bit of stinging. The stinging continued for the first few times I peed on my own, and then it went away. No sweat.

Thanks guys. I sure it will be fine. I go for my final preop visit with my surgeon next week. He is suppose to go over everything with me. I'll keep y'all updated.

Shooting it straight Bro, if I could've not had it, I would've picked that option. More annoying than painful. Just the stinging as mentioned. They do put it in while you're out..but you'll know its there when you get back to your room from surgery.

My nurse seemed to enjoy the fact that I didn't like it. She told me I was an ornery patient..& threatened to "pull the junk cord" if I didn't get it together! It was a PITA, but I made the best of it.

I understand where you are coming from. My wife laughs because I'm more nervous about the catheter than the surgery itself.

Good news! I had my last preop appt and the Dr said I should not need a catheter. He said they only put one in if something goes wrong or if it seems necessary. WHEW!

I just had mine yanked out today. At first it sucked when it was there. Constant stinging, especially when ever it was bumped or moved. But after a few hours didn't even notice it. Taking it out on the other hand was omg not fun... Not really painful, except for the tape on my hairy legs, but just uncomfortable as they pull what seems like a three meter long garden hose out.

I just got sleeved Dec 1st, no catheter. I had spinal fusion years ago and woke up with a catheter, what a blessing that was, really. The guy in the room with me didn't, he had to use a jug A LOT, make a mess if he couldn't do it right in all his pain. Meanwhile I just had to deal with me resting and not deal with peeing. It wasn't a big deal. As long as you have a nurse who knows how to do it right with lube, there shouldn't be too much discomfort that you should fear it. Some nurses are better than others. They have to FULLY deflate the balloon on the end that keeps it lodged in the bladder, otherwise it will HURT coming out.

Inserting a hose through "that" hole literally scares the living piss out of me!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
