WHAT???!!! did she really not know this is a permanent change?????? I personally went to MX. I did my research on this from the day I decided to do it. I found an amazing doctor who does alot of these to people on this board. I am 100$ perfect with amazing results. I have personally known 7 people who have gone to MX with great results. Guess what, they all knew this is a life changing alteration.

I don't buy this for a second. Complications happen anywhere in the world. You must do your research to know the good and bad.

This is so stupid.

That is one of the few negative experiences that I have heard about - that poor woman. While I am comfortable with the level of research and investigation that I have done -- what was really disturbing was the comments of the people at the bottom. They were so intolerant! That is one of the reasons that I am keeping my decision to have WLS to myself. People can be so mean.

Having said that - thank you Terry for posting that link - I want to go into this - eyes WIDE open. Good, bad and ugly.

This is about the risks of any surgery, one of the things that struck me is the comment that they wanted her to spend another 2 or 3 weeks in Mexico and that her complications were due to her refusal. I have seen a lot of people that have been successfully banded in Mexico and had fantastic results, but then I run into articles like this that make me think twice.

I wasn't afraid to have my surgery in Mexico (Tijuanna) this past January because I personally knew of horror stories from procedures performed in the U.S. I knew a woman that went home and died 5 days later. I knew another woman that never woke up from the surgery and was in a coma for months and months until she eventually expired. In 2003, my sister had surgery and had to have two follow-up surgeries. I can vouch for the fact though that Mexico's level of sterilization is not up to standards with the U.S. I don't know how they can change dressings, etc without rubber gloves. I would always clean myself with alcohol after they tended to me. I'm almost 2-months post op and have had not issues or complications other than reflux which I've always had.

That caught my attention as well. I'd like to know what they did or did not do to her. That is such a sad situation.

I agree, its sad what happened to her, but it could have happened in the US or Canada, too. I believe the new story neglected to mention that part.

This crap of a journalism is very one sided. She obviously had some issues prior to this. MX is the cleanest place for surgery I have ever witnessed. Like I said I would bring my children to him in the event I had a choice.

There are medical horror stories with just about every procedure out there.It is a sad fact.That is why I would not ever want to sway anyone in which direction they should take; which type WLS,surgery State side or abroad,dietary choices,etc. Unless someone asks a question in general or My experiences,I don't mind sharing my particular choices & the outcome but wouldn't want to be responsible for some one else's misery.

I hope everyone has 100% good results without any complications but believe that is going to happen is not being realistic...we don't live in a perfect world,so why expect perfection in all cases?

It is very,very sad for this person in the link. She had free choice,just like each one of us. Weigh out the pros & cons,then proceed in the direction that you feel is right for you.

I went to Costa Rica & got the gastric sleeve without any complications,None. Same with plastic surgery procedures but that is no guarantee that the next person won't.

Years ago,I had a bladder sling & a friend of mine wanted my opinion of the doctor & her skills. I bragged about how wonderful bedside manners were,skills top notch & 'yes,oh yes! Go to her.You won't be disappointed'. She did have unwanted results & to this day,won't speak to me. Lesson learned.

It said it was due to scar tissue. So it is how her body healed not necessarily the surgeons fault or the fact that it happened in Mexico. It is unfortunate but there are risks with all surgeries whether done in Canada or US or Mexico. I personally had my surgery in Mexico and had a very good experience and the rooms and hospital were a lot cleaner than ones I have seen in my own country. The government is upset saying it is costing them to fix surgeries but they have no idea how many people are going to Mexico with self pay. All of these people that are going are saving the government money because they are now able to lose the weight that is causing co-morbidities such as diabetes, heart disease, blood pressure problems that cause them to use health care and prescription medications. After losing the weight many patients have claimed to be medication free within a couple of months. This is just a piece of garbage journalism, how about a piece on the benefits???
