How fast should I be able to drink?

Recommended Posts

I'm 17 days post op and I can drink 12 oz of Gatorade/ water/ broth in an hour. That seems really fast. Is this okay?

i'm 32 days post-op and i can only get about 3 swallows down at a time. it takes me a couple of hours to drink 32 oz of liquid. maybe call the nutritionist. she might tell you that even if you can drink that fast, maybe you shouldn't. or she may say it's fine. i don't know, but i do know i can't drink that amount that fast. maybe i'm going too slow???

Yes, everyone heals differently and it doesn't reflect what your final restriction will be. Some people have less swelling or the swelling goes down faster and they can sip faster and eat a tiny bit more at first. You are going to do great!

mom023

congrats on being 17 days post op

if memory serves me correctly, at your present/early stage - you need/should drink slowly

your new tummy is healing from major surgery - be nice to it - and it will return the favor :)

talk to your NUT/surgeon about the water/liquid question

she will guide you about sipping, and eventually gulping

I "think" 16 oz in an hour sounds great - as long as you drink slowly

Many people on the board have problems getting liquids in at this early part of the game

many OP have continue to have post op problems w/drinking Water

consider yourself luck :)

continued good luck with your recovery

It takes me nearly all day to drink a 32 oz tea from Sonic. I can eat much easier than I can drink. It was my understanding that drinking while eating was out because the liquid would flush the food right out and you would take in more calories because of it.

Not happening that way for me. For me all the drinking seems to do is take up space that the food is supposed to occupy.

It really is true that everyone reacts very differently to being sleeved. I learn more each day.

If you mean me, nope no problem at all. I can almost drink the same as pre-op. there's no sip sip sip here. I drink 2-3 oz at a time.

Drinking and eating are no good for me either. I have made the mistake of taking a few sips after I was done eating and the extra liquid made me feel too full and uncomfortable. I didn't take into account that the liquid would take up that much room. When I drink straight liquid, it goes through quickly and doesn't bother me but together with food, can't happen

That's so interesting how it affects everyone so differently. Yeah drinking doesn't bother me one bit. I haven't started eating yet so I'm not sure how that will go.

Initially post op sips but never gulp or take more than 5 seconds per swallow. Let's too much air in and it will hurt.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
