You are not alone. I was ranting a few days ago because I was soooo hungry. My surgery date is June 27!!! I am on day 3 of the pre op diet. I can have 4 high Protein slim fast shakes a day, a handful of fruit and some veggies. The first 2 days were rough! I was cranky! I think is was the withdrawal symptoms you spoke of! But today I am ok. Praise God! I drink my Water so that fills me up and I drink the shakes BEFORE I get hungry. This tip really helped me because once I get hungry my mind starts to think about old habits. I have to realize that my previous relationship with food is over. :-( It's almost like breaking up with a boyfriend that you had an unhealthy relationship with!! Hang in there! It does get better.

I have no words of advice for you ladies since I'm not up to that point yet, but I do want to wish you both the best. Hunger is NOT a good feeling! My doc said that when I'm on the pre-op diet, I will get 4 Protein Shakes & 1 smart meal per day. Protein, veggies & very little carb. I am not looking forward to it but I do want to adhere to doc's recommendations so that I can have a safer surgery. Hugs for you both!!

I started my 2 weeks of liquid yesterday. I am getting sleeved on June 28 in New Orleans.

Yesterday wasn't too bad. But today has been horrible. I've already had 2 shakes (50grams Protein combined) and a few sf Popsicles...

Also now I have 'the runs' sorry if that's too much info... I was wondering if anyone else had the same thing?

Your headache is from detoxing your body from the carbs and sugar you are absolutely right about that... It gets a little better I don't know what kind of Protein Shakes your drinking, but costco has the premiere Protein kind they have 30 grams of protein and they are better than any others I've tasted.. Good luck and I hope it gets better :) I have surgery on the 24th so getting nervous!!!

Hi, my name is Sabrina, and I'm having my sleeve done this Tuesday, June 18th.

Yes, I'm nervous and I can relate to the loneliness you described. I've been talking about it a lot lately, and overall, people are supporting me, although they can't really relate. My pre-op diet is 5 Protein shakes or bars a day, and then one meal a day with 5oz of lean Protein and 2 cups of veggies.

My problem has always been that I hate vegetables, and I always replaced them with carbs. So, that part of the diet has been very hard for me. However, since by the end of the day I cherish that I'm able to eat at all, the broccoli and lettuce don't seem so bad.

I've come to a shocking and horrible realization that I've *never* felt good before. I guess I got used to living with a stomach ache and diarrhea, and now that I don't have either, I'm amazed at the difference. Despite missing the taste of unhealthy foods, I'm that much less inclined to go back to that, now that I know how sick it really makes me.

So far, I've lost 15 lbs on the pre op diet, and people are saying "see? You can do it alone! Why do you need surgery?" I think I'm going alright because I can see the finish line, but I don't think I can keep this up on my own without some hunger control help. I also need my brain to know that I *can't* eat like that, not just that I shouldn't.

The bright side is that I've noticed a significant decrease in carb craving in the past 2 weeks. Someone was eating a brownie next to me the other day, and I felt sorry for myself for not being able to have one too. But, as soon as I really checked myself, I realized that it wasn't my stomach desiring it, but my brain was. I decided to use reason, and the upcoming stomach ache and the potential sabotage of my surgery helped me decide that I really didn't want the brownie.

One more day before I get on that plane!

Here goes nothin'...

Sabrina

I'm on day five of the pre-op diet (surgery date 6/25) and the first few days were rough! It's gotten better, but I'm still kind of in a mental fog and extremely tired by the end of the day. I took a four hour nap this afternoon! I get two Protein Shakes a day and a dinner with 4-6 oz of lean Protein and non-starchy veggies. If hunger persists, I'm allowed a piece of fruit, light yogurt, more veggies, or 1 oz of light cheese. I've had to eat an apple in the late afternoon to make it through to dinner. I think this really is mentally prepping us for post-op... I'm definitely eating slower, and savoring what I do get. We're so close - we can do this!

Hey..my date is the 18th. I'm 12days into my pre op diet. The first couple of days were the worst. The headache will go away and you will begin to feel much better. I was 299 now I am 287! I probably would weigh even less but I cheated last weekend. Keep up the good work!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
