In Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies it actually says that carbonation stretching the stomach has never been proven. However, it does say that it will give you gas.

Scientific evidence that carbonation stretches the stomach. Some say there dr says do not drink others say dr says just in moderation. Some say no restriction. What is the truth? Where does it say it hurts you. I could see before you heal but after 6 months or so will it be alright.
