What All Tests Were Required Preop?

My insurance has a long list of requirements for wls.

I have finished or will finish by the end of this month:

  • 5 required classes with the health education at my ***,
  • 6 months of weekly classes on food and exercise,
  • 6 months of monthly doctor visits (to meet the doctor supervised weightloss requirement)
  • the psych evaluation
  • attendance at an info seminar by my surgeon
  • attendance at a support group meeting
  • my last appt with the supervising doctor is next week
  • my appt with the nutritionist is the last week of this month

what other tests/appts/challenges are ahead?? I know I meet with surgeon, but I hear some people need ultrasounds and ekgs and sleep studies etc..

So much, it seems.

- attend two group support meetings

- Nutrition evaluation

- Psych Evaluation

- Cardiologist Evaluation

- sleep Study/Pulmonary Evaluation

- Extensive blood work

- Upper Endoscopy

- A quiz to take

- 6 months supervised diet with PCP

And I'm just at the very beginning of it all. Lol. Long ways to go.

I was cash pay so all my doctor required was lab work and an ekg to make sure I was healthy enough to go under anesthesia and have surgery. A lot of the things (like a sleep study) are required by the insurance company. You might call the doctor's office and ask what they require. It sounds to me like you are getting super close to surgery.

Best of luck in your journey!

Depends on your insurance, and doctor

Surgeon requirements:

Labs,

Ekg

Upper endoscopy

Insurance:

Letter of medical necessity from the pcp

3 monthly appointments with a nutritionist

Psych eval

Had the Nut visit, the Psych visit, had labs, and ekg my PCP sent the letter of necessity, I am having upper endoscopy on Thursday. Now i have 2 more Nutritionist visits one in august 6 and the other sept 6 i should be ready to go at that point.

Referral from PCP

12 weeks of classes

blood tests

meet dr same day, met nutritionist, had ekg, more blood work and chest x-ray

surgery

I had to have.... A letter of medical necessity

5 yr weight history

Attend seminar

A psych evaluation

1 nutritional class

A pre op with surgeon

Full panel of blood work

EKG

Upper GI

Let's see:

Letter form PCP

6 months supervised diet/exercise w/ PCP

Cardiology clearance w/ stress test, EKG

Pulmonology clearance

Endocrinology clearance

Lab work - TSH fairly normal, other levels in check

Abdominal ultrasound

Sleep Study

Upper GI

Nutrition consult

Psych consult

Nutrition class w/ test

My insurance has no requirements other than pre auth and one co morb if BMI 35-39.9 that's a check. Now it's the surgeon that had the requirements:

Two days one week a part:

A whole bunch of labs

Bariatrician visit

Psych visit

Bariatric nurse visit

Second day:

Lab results with doc

Physical therapist

Nut

That's it. I was told I'd be submitted this morning however I will wait until Friday to call.

Shooting for an August surg date! Easy peasy.

**labs found out I have H Pylori had to do a conformation stool sample test, ran that to the lab today. Once confirmed 10-14 days of antibiotics.

Good luck!!

wow of course I knew alot of evals for any surgery but kinda of surprising the difference in amount

of hoops for different payment options.

I have completed all the hoops and now am waiting for the actual labs, medical clearances and consult with surgeon.

I had no required seminars, appointments or the like. Psych and NUT were optional and I went to the NUT. Other than that I just had consults with the surgeon and blood screening.

I'm still in the process but what I've had to do/have to do:

Ultrasound

Endoscopy

Nutritionist weigh ins for 3 months

Sleep study

Pulmonary eval

Surgery clearance (blood work, EKG)

Psych eval

I'll be finished with everything next month and should get a date for October!
