I'm 3 weeks post-op and wondering when I will be out of danger for a leak? How far out has a leak been reported?

  • I asked that of my doctor and was told that it can happen as far out from surgery as 6 - 8 months. Think that is why they give you such a strict diet to follow. At least my surgeon did but I know many

I was just sleeved on Monday 4/2/12 and my doctor stated that after 6 weeks out, you should be pretty safe as far as developing a leak. Hope this helps!

Is there a reason you suspect a leak? It is unlikely you can have a test done and paid for just to ease your mind with no symptoms or problems. If you are following your surgeon's instructions and not going off the diet plan, following up with your surgeon when required and have no symptoms then I would not worry.

I have not had surgery yet, just asking after reading different comments.

Oh - talk to your Dr about your concerns. The rate of leaks is extremely low and you will be monitored closely at your followup appointments. You will also be given a list of symptoms to call sure if you have any! Most importantly - don't go off plan postop. This is why everyone gets upset when someone says they ate steak (popcorn, etc) 2 weeks postop or they ate a foot long sandwich a month out. The first few months are the most critical healing time!

I was 3 weeks out and lifted something over 10 lbs, stomach was hurting so I went and saw my surgeon asap and he said at this point you are far enough out you can not hurt your sleeve. I ended up pulling a muscle.
