Just Saw My Post-Op Diet

Recommended Posts

Anyone will lose 30 lbs with basically a liquid diet for a month. Makes me wonder why I don't just try to do that! Ha! Seriously though, I know my desire to eat wont be there but seeing my diet messes with my head.

My surgery is scheduled for April 12th, btw

I was put on mush 1 week out and i have lost nearly 30 in a month. As for doing it on your own i know I always justified cheating "oh i only see one movie a month ill get popcorn" or "i only eat out once a fortnight so i would eat big "and cheat my diet. You'll be fine hang in there. Xxx

Post op you just aren't hungry so that is what helps keep you from cheating.

It is hard to the pre-op liquid diet, but post op, you will have problems just getting the liquids in. Like Junior Guru said, trust your dr's and do your best to follow the diet. Good luck! :)

Obviously if this diet scares you then you might want to rethink the surgery. This is a life change not a quick fix. Also you said that if you could only eat liquids for 30 days you could lose the weight. Well then what has kept you from doing just that.

We have all faced these same questions and dilemas and have failed miserably. Time to step up and take control of your life.

My mom told me that when I lost 12 pounds on my pre-op diet!! It was torture!!! I literally had to clear my house of all foods and not go out/interact much w/ people... I knew I couldn't do that long term w/o help.. My sleevina was a Godsend!!!

Don't allow preoccupation about post-op diet cause you anxiety... You're almost there.. I believe after surgery, you're gonna read this post and laugh!!

Blessings to you...

Thank you all for your replies. I didn't mean to sound like I could do this on my own, I was just voicing my thoughts and probably should have filtered them beforehand. I know I need this. If not for me, then to be a more active parent for my children. In fact, that's almost more of a reason for me, because I have no more will power to do this on my own. I've dieted in the past and lost 30, 40 and 60 pounds and gained it all back each time. I'm at a point where I just don't have the willpower to do it anymore, so this is what I need. Hopefully the lack of grelin (sp?) will really work and it'll be easier to do this diet post-op.

The pre-op liquid diet is the toughest part. I didn't think I could live with doing that for two weeks pre-op, but I knew I wouldn't live a year without doing that liquid diet. Afterwards, I didn't really care that I was on a liquid diet, because I couldn't put a lot down at a time anyway. The liquid diet definitely helped break my sweets addiction and detoxed me from a lot of things, including caffeine.

So, while the diet sucks, it pays big dividends. At 7 months out and down 90 pounds, I'm thrilled I managed to do the liquid part of this journey! :)

I am having to do a 21 day liquid diet before surgery and there will be 2 weeks of more liquids post op. I am on day 12 pre op and honestly I couldn't care less if I never ate anything else again. food doesn't even interest me anymore (I'm sure this will change.) Like Lissa.. I am totally detoxed and really feel good. I did have a few days the first week of some slumps and no energy but that seems to have passed. Good luck on your journey and focus on the goal. No doubt I can do this now and so can you.

I like that you realize that you need to filter your words, especially with your children. Words are perceived by others so differently than our intent and with our children, they are so hurtful and stick with your little ones for life. After I had my surgery, the doc told me to expect 1-2 lbs of weight loss per week, and I thought, WTF, I could just stayed on a 1200 cal diet and accomplished that. Reality is, if I could have been dilagent enough to do that, I would of a long time ago. I couldn't so now is time I have to learn healthier eating habits and keep them. After all, the sleeve is only a tool. ;)

I would just like to say that the way a few of you responded to him was really rude. If I were him I wouldn't come back to this forum after that. He was making a joke....I think that's allowed here.

Anyways...good luck on your journey and I'm really glad you you've made the decision to change your life for you and your kids! That's awesome!! :)

Bethany1987: I'm just wondering who you thought was rude.

I read everyone's post and it didn't seem rude to me.

Some were about reality checking which is highly beneficial to the OP. And how do you know the OP's joking? Like I said in an earlier post, every perceives things differently. No is meaning to offend anyone here. We are all here to support and help fellow sleevers. Please don't take this as an attack, because it is not meant that way. ;)

I hope your journey is awesome like mine. ;)

The responses saying if you're scared of the post op diet than you should reconsider surgery. I think any of us would be lying if we said we weren't a bit scared before surgery. Not eating is a tough thing to grasp before most of your stomach is taken out.

I knew he was joking cause he said "ha!"

I just feel a few posts weren't supportive, but maybe it was tough love. I just know when I read it I felt like if I were the OP I would have felt a bit attacked. That's the fun thing about the internet...no way to get tone across.

Thanks Bethany1987 ~ you are right it's hard to hone in the tone when it comes to the internet, or texting. Congrats on your 12 lb weight loss. When was your surgery? and how are you doing? If there's any way I can help, let me know, and I'll do my best. ;)

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
