Oh, so THAT's what dumping feels like

Recommended Posts

So...

Before I start. YES, I ate bad stuff. YES, this was my fault. YES, I fell off the wagon, AGAIN, but I'm still losing, still in control 98% of the time, and still appreciative that I put myself through this.

So before I got sleeved I discovered this new dessert: French Macarons. * sigh*

Long story short. They're cute little egg white Cookies sandwiched together with jam, ganache' or buttercream in the center. I think they're good... they are. I was invited to party of someone who I'm trying to impress because I'm an intern in my graduate program. I knew these fancy Cookies would be a hit and a conversation starter. I eat one...an hour later, I eat another. An hour later, I eat 1.5. My tummy gets upset. Like real upset. Then I get a headache, massive friggin headache. Then I leave because my bowels were getting angry with me. WOW, violent bathroom episode (I know, TMI), I hate macarons now.

So... my body said, "okay girl, you don't believe you had surgery huh?"

So that's dumping.

Oh Lord...I think that is my worst fear of what can happen post-op. YIKES!!! But yeah, those little macaroons are one of MANY things that did me in to begin with! lol.

I get dumping too, and the further out you get the better your brain starts to remind you: "Should I have that? What will happen if I eat too much?" For me, this has been one of the best side effects from my surgery. I absolutely cannot eat a lot of sugar or even a lot of fat in one sitting. I have to remain mindful of portions etc, and never over-do it.

I have sweets once in awhile but it's never more than just a tiny portion. In fact yesterday I had some cookie, I didn't even eat a whole one. Just a few bites even, and it did make my heart beat a little fast but that was the extent of my body's response to it. I think anymore and I'd been a mess!

Yeah, I can eat a cookie, but potato chips are a whole 'nother story. Just a few, seriously, like 3, and WOW what a horrible reaction from sleevie and friends. Pain, nausea, pain, bathroom episode, pain... at least I didn't throw up, but it was close for 30 minutes or so. I'm actually rather grateful, since now I know I absolutely can't have them, and I'm cool with that. They're not good for me anyway. We're all learning our way through the eating jungle! Meg

Dumping even happens to people that don't have stomach surgery. I only get dumping type symptoms with heavy milk fat stuff like buttercream frosting, and only happens occasionally. Some days I can eat it, some days I get major gas and kind of loopy feeling. I'm back to being lactose intolerant in the pregnancy and can't eat/drink milk, or full fat cheeses.

I also found when I cut foods out of my diet for a period of time be it fried foods, or heavy fat-laden foods, and then I randomly add them back in, my body revolts. This happened to me pre-op especially when I would diet. My body would get used to not processing that crap then I'd throw some kind of yumminess in there and BAM I'd be in the potty.

Things have gotten way better since being so far out. I can eat buttercream in small amounts without issue, but milk and full fat cheese really does a number on my stomach.

Oh god, I so hear you on this one. I ate half a red velvet 'whoopie pie' (cake with cream cheese icing sandwiched between?) and felt like complete and total crap. I was so out of it and dizzy and nauseated...ugh, took like a couple hours before I felt better. Never again! (I would have been fine if I'd only had a few bites over a few hours instead of half of it all at one go.)

:D I am only 2 months out on Monday and I am AFRAID!! I have read about these "episodes" some get and that keeps me from trying things I know I shouldn't be putting in my body anyway.

I made a 4th of July cake for work the other day and did not even have any. People at work were like "aren't you having any?" It had cream cheese icing on it and the cake was red, white, and blue with strawberry's and blueberries on top (like a flag) too cute!! I was too afraid to even have a bite!!

I am kinda glad that I am a chicken, but at the same time, I wish I could have a cookie! I might try one when I am a little further out, but for now, I will remain chicken!! LOL

I am almost jealous of you who do dump! When I had popcorn on my birthday- no problem- slid right down...ditto the ice cream I had, and the english toffee in one of the ice cream flavors. Also the 1/4 biscotti I ate.

Maybe the fear is a good thing Kelly! At the same I need to know I can have anything- I don;t want to get too freaked out about this as it will remind me of too many diets I have been on.

Oh man, it's not just potato chips for me... I had 2 chicken nuggets from Chik-Fil-A (the little bitty ones!) and thought I was going to die--not in the good way! They tasted great, but OH, sleevie does not like them!!! Same painful symptoms, same bout with nausea and bathroom--again, did not throw up (only bright side), but felt horrible for half an hour. It is evidently the fried foods that cause this for me, because I absolutely ate a little cookie the other day and had no problem. Yuck. It's a great thing, though, because it will be a cold day you know where before I try either of those foods again, and that is by my choice!!! I don't like stomach ick and pain.

Still figuring it all out! M.

I once had a very, very small cup of fruity yogurt (a la Pink Berry) about two months post-op (I did a lot of walking and wanted to reward myself). Anyway, about twenty minutes after I ate some of it -- just a few bites -- my heart started to race as if I'd run a marathon. When I went to take a shower, I started to feel light headed, and I FAINTED. In. The. SHOWER. I woke up in very cold Water so I'm not sure how long I was out.

I did not put two-and-two together until a month or so later when I had a sip of my boyfriend's milkshake and the same feeling started to come back. I never had any "bathroom issues" but I am not going to mess around with my little tummy dumping all that sugar into my small intestine too fast.

Needless to say I have avoided sweet things. I would caution others to be very careful with sugary things after surgery.

I can't believe it- after posting that....tonight I had my version of a dumping episode! I ate half a small ripe peach and a rip apricot....and within 10 minutes had terrible stomach pains and a bathroom experience that was not pleasant. I will absolutely hate it if this is going to happen every time I eat that- especially the apricot- our tree is just ripening and they are FABULOUS. Actually now I remember I had one yesterday with no issue! In any case my body needed to get rid of it, and fast. I did not eat the skin of either.

Meggie, maybe it was the high Fiber and high Water content that got to your tummy? I go through that a lot with salad and fresh fruits but I have IBS and those things definitely put the RUN! in runs.

I don't get it ....I really did think the dumping thing was for gbypass people....I thought not having to deal with this is one of the benefits of the vsg. So does it get better the longer out of surgery you are? Thanks, Tracy

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
