Hi Ladies! I'm looking for some feedback on the comparison between having a hysterectomy and doing the VST. Once I read that VST was a breeze compared to the hysterectomy but then I read another's post that freaked me out. I had a hysterectomy a few years ago and when I woke up from that the pain was so bad I couldn't speak and what saved me was my husband sitting next to me telling me to push that morphine button every 10 min! I'm having surgery out of country with Dr. Kelly next month and for child care reasons I will likely be alone and now wondering if I can handle it! But.. I so want this so I'm doing it. Just hoping for some frank and real info on the comparison if you have experienced both. Thanks!

I had ceseareans one of which was under general. I can tell you that the pain after the VSG was a cake walk compared to a cesarean.

Thanks apple-saucy! I have had a C-section and a Hysterectomy and an ovarian cyst removal so experienced with abdominal surgery and really hoping this one will be a breeze!

Like you I haven't had my VSG yet but did have a laproscopic assisted hysterectomy. It hurt like hell when I woke up but my Dr. decided I didn't need morphine...I felt so weak afterwards! When they removed the lymph nodes, they kept bumping a nerve so it felt like my groin was on fire for months afterwards... LOL I had to wear men's boxer shorts. Like you I am hoping this is a little easier. I have had my gall bladder removed and it was a cake walk compared to the hysterectomy.

I would have VSG surgery over and over rather than another c-section. I was an outpatient for VSG surgery. No drain, no pain pump, no catheder, no nurse bugging me at all hours. Now, was I ready to resume normal life that first week after surgery? No. I slept in a recliner at home with a heating pad while listening to my stomach growl at me as I tried to get in liquids. Know you can endure discomfort for a rocking sleeve miracle.

As far as pain goes, the hysterectomy was much worse than vsg. With the hysterectomy I had pain at the incision site and it was hard to get up out of bed because of pain. The aftermath of these 2 surgeries is not really comparable in my opinion. With the vsg, I did not even need my pain meds...but there was discomfort. I had the shoulder pain issue, and my stomach was really crampy and growly for a week. For alot of people including me, swallowing liquids leaves you with a somewhat painful "lump" going down your esophagus. Your stomach/sleeve will be a new stranger to you, and neither of you will be very happy until about day 11.

I think the pain from c-sections I had earlier were different from vsg because the soreness is higher up on the vsg. I guess the lower surgery made it harder to sit up from a flat position. I was pleasantly surprised. I did hurt with the trapped gas, but the walking soon after surgery helped ease that.

I've had a hysterectomy with added complications. I developed a seroma, which became abscessed, and the skin around it developed cellulitus! This was the worst train wreck of surgeries. I ended up having to have a second surgery a month after my hyst. to remove the abscess and had to go through 4 months of daily wound care, and wear a wound vacuum for 3 months. So, I too, have been a little worried about how much "pain"will be involved with the actual surgical part of this. I'm scheduled to be sleeved on the 14th of July. I'm excited and extremely nervous at the same time!

I had a hysterectomy oh so long ago with the complete stomach cutting. I never had the pain pump for that, (the nurse forgot to set it up but I just took any additional pain meds in my iv. As for my VSG. I was up walking within 2 hours of getting to my room. I never had a pain pump and only use the pain meds they gave in my IV every 4 hours. I did have available additional pills if I needed but for me it wasn't necessary. I know I had more pain with my hysterectomy then with the VSG. Just remeber to walk as much as possible afterwards as that will help with the gas pain. I slept with a pillow under my legs and stomach to sleep on my side. I could never sleep on my back. Any pain will be fleeting as you keep focus on the final reward of losing weight.

Thanks for all the replies! So glad to know this is better than the hysterectomy! My sleeve date is 7/12 ..coming right up!

Ready to live, I had a hysterectomy in 2008 and my experience was just like yours. Very painful and when they told me I had to get up and walk the first time, my whole body shook because of the pain and I could only make it two steps towards the door. I just had my surgery on July 7th for my sleeve and let me tell you, I had no nausea and hardly any pain -- Just a lot of soreness like I had done 1,000 ab crunches. I hardly used any pain medications and when they got me up to walk I did an entire lap around the hallway. I did exactly what everyone on here talks about, after my leak test I started sipping, sipping, sipping and I got up and walked whenever I could. If I couldn't sleep, I walked and by the time I came home on Saturday, I was feeling pretty darn good . I went into this surgery expecting, like you, the worst pain ever and actually was very blessed to have just the opposite. You will do great too. No one can understand that pain unless they have been through it, but this doesn't even compare.

Hi Dawn, Thanks so much for the encouragement! I'll go into this much more relaxed! I'm packing now.. leave tomorrow to travel to Mexico. Can't wait to be on that losers / recovery bench with you!
