They are in the ethinic food isle at most food stores, or buy a bag of pinto beans and cook them up and mash them. :)

Well I know you can by them already prepared that way. They are in the Mexican section at my grocery store. The major brand here is old el paso or taco bell refried beans. And they are deeeeelish! I have one more week of full liquids then I can have them! Good luck finding them.

Thanks gals. I am going to look for this. I'm not quite at that stage yet, but I am preparing.

had some today, yum!

Watch out with the calories on those-they were actually mentioned at my post op last week because they are packed with protein but a very high calorie count

My nut told me the something about high calories and for a couple weeks this was all I wanted. Also if you have a Taco Bell in your area the pintoes and cheese are good and cheap :)

You can get them already prepared in the Mexican section of most grocery stores, but I like to make my own. You can certainly make them from dried pinto Beans, but I usually skip that step and buy canned whole pinto beans. I like to simmer them with a few cloves of garlic and part of a jalapeno (or a serrano if you REALLY like the heat.) after they simmer for 10 minutes or so, mash them a bit with a potato masher and let them simmer a bit longer, then turn off the heat. They'll thicken some as they stand.

My (Mexican) roommate's mom takes a medium sauce pan, adds about 1/4-1/3 cup of oil, then fries a corn tortilla in the oil along with garlic to flavor the oil, then pulls out the garlic and the tortilla (before it burns). It flavors the oil, and then you follow my directions above, using a large can of beans, aprox 32oz.

Don't make them that way though, it's super unhealthy! LOL! :D

Any way you make them, be mindful of the calories. I only eat them as a side to some carne asada or marinated chicken, or in a small taco salad. (Lettuce, ground beef, salsa, refried beans, low fat sour cream, and a tiny bit of shredded cheese for color.)

Oh my! I just had a little but of retried beans lime special, a little bit of sour cream and a little bit of cheese, sooooo goood! And I was full after my second spoon :)

Yummmmmmm!

Once you have tasted home made refrtios frijoles (Refried beans for you white people), you will never eat them from a can again.

I get the low fat old El Paso, mix in cheese, sour cream, salsa (I like hot salsa, but obviously you can use any kind). It's delicious!

Then you must give us '' white'' people an authentic recipe! :-)

I'm in love! I found my perfect dinner for the rest of my mushy stage! <3

White people can't use google???

Here is how my mother taught me how to make them...

Take a bunch of dried pinto Beans, soak them over night and discard the Water afterwards.

Put in fresh water, several cloves of garlic and a hunk of Salt Pork in the kettle and simmer the beans for several hours until tender.

Remove the salt pork, let the water simmer down until it is below the top of the beans,

Mash about 30% of the beans with a potato masher and cook until nice and thick.

She would add a pound of sharp cheddar for Frijoles con Queso, but I simply put a little shredded cheese on for flavor.

BTW, not sure how authentic this is, although I was raised in an Hispanic area, you may have noticed "Poperszky" is not normally recognized as being "South of the border" in origin. :o
