Grapefruit juice 9 days post op

Ok.. Long story short, I'm at emergency for my port incision which is "oozy". The ONLY beverage they have in this small weird backwards town is grapefruit juice... No bottles of water. Why is grapefruit juice not allowed within the first 6 weeks?

I have never heard that grapefruit juice isn't allowed. I do know however that it interacts with a lot of different medications so is often contraindicated for those reasons. The best thing to do is speak to your Dr. The other option of course is to drink tap water - surely tap water in the US is safe to drink?

You need liquids that contain protein. I doubt you need the acidity of grapefruit juice, plus I would question how much sugar is in it. If a serving has more than 5 grams of sugar, you probably shouldn't be drinking it. If you stocked up on protein powder before your surgery, you can just mix it with water and you're good to go. You need plenty of liquids and tons of protein right now!

I hope you feel better soon! I believe juice to be a bad idea in general. It is loaded with sugar, natural sugar but still sugar. Some brands add sugar to it as well. I know you are in the er with limited choices but in general, you are much better off eating a piece of fruit rather than drinking juice. You get fiber et... Again, hope you feel better soon.

Grapefruit juice is known to interact negatively with several types of meds. So based on meds you take it may be out - or they may eliminate it as policy to prevent having to vet it against each patients meds.

ADDITIONALLY, fruit juice is FULL of sugar and therefore evil. Worse than bottle of coke.

Thanks all. I didn't drink it, but I was kind of annoyed they didn't have bottles of water. And as much as I could have gotten water from a fountain, I didn't want to stand by the fountain for the 3 hours while I was at the hospital

Annie, I sure how hope you are feeling better now...

I am. I had a teeny infection in my port incision, so I wanted it looked at.

Glad to here that you are better!
