embarassing question

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am 2 days post op and last night ans this morning had uncontrollable diarrhea. I can't get too far from the toilet. I have been drinking Water, ginger tea, homemade broth and yesterday tried Isopure (clear Protein drink).

Is this normal? When will it end?

If you took the Xray test post op to see how the liquids go down your stomach, then yes, this is normal per my nurse. The stuff you drink for the test (forgot the name, but it's similar to Barium) does that. However, I think if it persists throughout the day, you should absolutely contact your dr. anyway to be on the safe side. Always better to be safe than sorry!! Good luck!!! :-)

I did'nt do a Barium swallow and had the same issue. Even woke me up my first night home; was in the bathroom every half hour.

I had the same thing. After a week of it I contacted my NUT and she had me switch up my Protein Powder to a lactose free one and, although it didn't stop the diarhea it certainly helped it not happen as often.

I totally experienced this until I started pureed food. Be sure to stay hydrated while having the diarrhea... gatorade and pedialyte popsicles will help keep you hydrated.

Thanks everyone. I did not do a barium test after. I hope it stops soon.

Also, I feel hungry. I thought I was not supposed to be hungry. Do I have to wait until the fill?

Hi JerseyGal,

I am also 2 days post-op. At discharge my nurse told me that the antibiotics can cause diahrhea for several days, but of coure I have yet to experience my first BM. Just to let you know I also feel hungry...especially around my familes meal time and the wonderful smells. Its not a "severe" hunger, but I fell I could eat just a little something more than my my liquid Protein (yum, yum LOL). What makes it worse is I also have the grumbellies...I am not sure if this hunger or just gas.

Yep. I had diarrhea the entire 2 weeks I was on liquids. As someone else said, liquids in, liquids out. Then when I started the mushies, it was mushies in, smearies out. I didn't have a normal bowel movement until I got back on regular food. Just keep drinking! I know it sounds counter-productive, but you have to keep hydrated. Watch your pee color. You shouldn't really see any color in the toilet. The more yellow it looks, the more dehydrated you are. (I learned that from my son in the military - he said they actually had a color chart in the bathroom.)

Once you start solids it should be reduced. Then it will depend what you eat. Clean foods (no sugars, no white flours, etc.) and you'll have normal movements, if you eat sugars or loads of white carb foods (generally also loaded with sugar) you'll likely continue with loose stool (sugars cause your intestines to pull Water out to clear them faster, hence loose stools).

As for hunger, you may always feel hungry.

The band doesn't reduce your hunger (in some people it can press on the vagus nerve, but you don't actually want that as it can cause other issues), it simply reduces the amount of food you can eat, which then triggers the 'full' response with less food. Once your pouch is full you simply can't jam anything else in there without vomiting and eventually your stomach sense the signal that it's full.

I felt like I was starving the first four weeks. Only after my first fill was I able to go a full 5 hours between meals (depending what I ate).

Isopure really does help though, I saw that you're using it, you can use it as the cold Water in Jello to make a high Protein snack as well. But even cold it's so much easier to get down than a shake!

Hi,

How are you feeling otherwise? I am sore and really tired. And hungry!!!! I think I just need to go to bed, so I don't think about how hungry I am. LOL!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
