I am on my post op liquid diet (on day 4 of 10).

I have been having roughly 600 cals a day - Protein shakes / Water etc.

Thoughts on me having a glass of wine? It's a liquid....not on the official list .

Your serious? Really? You think wine is an acceptable drink during the post op liquid diet just b/c it is a liquid???

Every Dr. is different but mine said no alcohol for 18 months and no carbonated beverages at all. I wouldn't risk it. It seems a shame to have gone through the surgery and all the hoops you have to jump through to risk screwing it up so soon. Good luck with whatever you decide. I was banded on Jan. 10th and I'm sticking to the yucky liquid diet.

Could it be worse than the pain meds? Seriously? You are four days post op and want to drink alcohol? Apparently no classes, surgery or all the crap you have gone through is enough to say no I wont drink because its not that it will hurt the band but it will hurt your weight loss in the worst way. Empty calories mean less weight loss. Try consentrating on why you had the surgery and not why a glass of wine should be counted as liquid. What in the world are you seriously thinking. You know what your doctor is going to tell you even next friday? If he is a great surgeon he is going to tell you hell no about alcohol. You are way to new post op to be thinking about something you shouldnt. Just saying but the ultimate decision will be yours of course.

Through this whole process focus on nutritious foods and beverages. Wine is for later on, down the road and, IMHO has no place in post op, not in my post op. Having said all that the publication my surgeon gave me from the Dr who pioneered this, says a glass of red wine has health benefits and could be worked in to a regular diet.

Focus and the reason why you've chosen this path and stay strong to your initial decision.

Thanks Mkrupa - Appreciate the post. I'm kinda where you are in terms of it not being part of post op. However - I honestly don't feel like it would hurt either my weight loss or my band - but that said - my body feels a little to fragile to have a glass of wine.

Fluffy - Really?? Is that your idea of support? Ultimately I will incorporate wine into my weight loss and I expect my surgeon (as great as he is) to be supportive of that. My view is that if you build a sustainable happy place for yourself with food and the band (even some alcohol) that you will be more successful in the long run. I was half joking about having it now - but wasn't looking for a preacher....

My Dr. gave me that book 'The Lapband Solution' and it talks about the studies done on those with bands that drank one glass of wine a day and those who didn't. Data showed that those who drank wine were actually more successful...and so the book recommends it. That being said, I think you're right to hold off now...you would probably feel so sick and light headed. Wait until solids...then the wine will taste even better!!!

4 days post op but nonetheless....A glass of wine would not kill you.....some other posters sound kinda harsh, I mean geez, its not gonna make it slip or stretch...give her a break. Just don't drink the whole bottle:)

SLD - after the evening I just had - I need the whole bottle Kids are crazy and I can't lift the little one - so she just keeps running from me. Now my left side is hurting - so I feel like crap.

momtofourredheads - (cool name) - The psychologist who did the exam for me said the same thing about the success. thx for the book tip - and I agree with waiting til solids!!

This is going to be one of the hardest nights for me. Husband is at work. I would typically get all the kiddies to bed by 8:30pm - then have a glass of wine and dinner to relax. Then I would break out the Snacks and watch tv . I guess i'm going to have to settle for a Protein shake and a bottle of Water - maybe with a book? Any good book recommendations.

Just a quick update - Despite some peoples raw disgust - I decided to go with having my glass of wine while watching the Jet game ! It was very relaxing - I could have had another, but needed to drive home in few hours.

Doing it felt normal, nice and not a cheat at all. I paired it with my strained cream of chicken Soup . I the long run drinking will be better for me than the overeating. Not for everyone but definitely me!

I didn't reply to your original inquiry, mainly because I think what one person does is that person's business, no one else's. I hope the wine you enjoyed was all you wanted it to be. And good for you for standing your ground.

I did want to point out something that's new for me since surgery:

I was never able to drink wine. I'm one of those people who has that immediate reaction to drinking a sip of wine, where I could feel it burn as it slid down my throat, and by the time it hit my stomach, it had turned to acid. I'd have huge reflux issues from the wine, to the point that drinking wine just was something I didn't expect I'd ever do. Not that I'm much of a drinker anyway, but it always bugged me that whenever we'd go out with friends, or someone would crack open a bottle of wine at a dinner party, I had to sit out, because it made me ill to drink any.

Well, fast forward to my surgery last month. The surgeon did an Endoscopy a few weeks prior to surgery, and he discovered I had a hiatal hernia. They put me on Prilosec OTC till surgery, and they repaired the hiatal hernia while putting in the band. I've had ZERO reflux or indigestion issues since surgery. As I've experimented with eating after surgery, absolutely nothing I've eaten has given me any kind of acid stomach, reflux, or whatever. It's like that switch is turned off.

So then, (the point of ths long tale), last night we went to the after-the-holidays Holiday Party for my spouse's work. Big fancy catered dInner and entertainment thing for several hundred people - your basic fancy, dress-up affair. I ate smart, and was fine that way, but when asked what I wanted to drink, I was a bit perplexed. I knew I didn't want anything caffeinated or carbonated, I didn't want to have any kind of mixed drink, and about all that was left to me was a glass of wine. I figured "What the heck?" and ordered a glass of white wine to have on the table. I already had a glass of Water, just in case.

The wine went down without so much as a burp. No reflux, no acid stomach, and I was able to enjoy it enough to realize it was terrible wine, and I quit after about three sips. (Nasty stuff!) But the victory was mine - I can apparently now drink wine, which is a backhanded NSV of ever there was one. LOL!

I was 11 days post-op when I had my first alcoholic beverage since surgery. It too was at a post-holiday party. I had a vodka-cranberry (hey-juice!). I had to watch everyone else digging in to NY Strip steaks while I sat & ate 1/4 cup of mashed potatoes....I decided I deserved to get SOME enjoyment out of the evening. I sipped it slow, 1 oz every 15 minutes just like I was supposed to have my beverages.. It tasted good & there were no problems. But, day 4 post-op, I don't think I would have tried it!

So my doctor says 3 months post op you may have a glass of wine. Now I am one of those people that struggle each day with there favorite stuff and even more so if it is sitting right in front of you. Now the empty calories is what is bad in this situation but it is not going to kill you it is not going to hurt your band and right now your not even in the weight loss stage your in the healing stage. Frankly I am not sure how long I will wait until I decide to have a glass of wine. I do not drink that often but I think there are worse things you could have done. Hell you could have went and got a milkshake which is a lot more calories. This is a lifestyle change not a diet in the end you are stuck with this thing for life. I worry about how normal I will feel once I am band but something will be normal for me. I may can never tolerate bread which is my favorite thing in the world. Moderation is key and I think you did really well with only having one glass Kudos to you. Now as far as the rude post Not everyone is going to agree with your decision but I got a lot of rude comments when I came here for support to quit smoking as well so I know how bad that made you feel SO sorry for that! Focus on what is good for you. Your not going to loose weight as a statistic this much this week but on how hard you work and how your body allows those efforts to work don't stress just ride the ride or at least that is what I am telling myself.
