I've been banded 8 days now. I was too sleepy, achy, ect to worry about having coffee til now. I used to drink it everyday sometimes into afternoon. I only pour a half cup now and that's good. I don't mind not having as much as i did but would like some. I know we all will get into our own schedules of eating and drinking to make it work. Is there a problem with caffinated ?

There's some argument that caffeine stimulates the appetite, but I haven't noticed it. I generally drink about half a pot a day with no ill effects.

My nutritionist is more worried about the caffeine causing dehydration. She recommended that I do one reg coffee in the morning and then move to decaf. One diet tip I once read said that you could continue to have reg coffee but that you had to have an equal amount of water to offset the caffeine.

I used to be so tired and cranky if I didn't have my coffee in the morning. But since my surgery 3 weeks ago, losing a little bit of weight and quitting it (for now) I haven't felt the need for it. I thought I was going to get crazy. My nutritionist also recommended to limit it once I was allowed caffeine again due to dehydration. Instead I've been drinking sugar free hot chocolate at work the last few days, it probably does have a little caffeine but not as much as coffee and it tastes much better. I guess it's a mental thing, I need something hot to drink in the mornings and the hot chocolate is a good substitute for me.

i was told the problem with cafinated coffee is it is a diuretic, so it can be dehydrating. I was told for every cup of cafinated coffee I drink I need to drink an additional 16 oz of water. I miss my coffee, i drink decaf most of the time just because it's hard for me to get the extra water in. But every now and than I need my whole bean gormet cafinated pot of java!

If you are only drinking a 1/2 cup or a cup a day, I wouldn't worry at all about it. My NUT and dr said one cup of coffee a day, with low fat creamer and or sugar substitute (or just black) is fine and that you shouldn't deprive yourself if it is something you truly enjoy having.

I am allowed coffee now but was not allowed to have it until I was one week post op. I only have one cup a day so I'm not overdoing it.

Yes, I won't give up my one excellent cup of coffee in morning. I use raw Stevia now and a lowfat half n half.

My nutritionist and doctor said that they would never tell anyone not to have their coffee. They do recommend being very careful about the creamer and type of sugar (prefer that we use none or artificial).

I don't remember how long I went before I started drinking coffee again, but I know I didn't have it for at least the first few days. I used to not be a big coffee fan, but I LOVE it now. I have a few cups every morning with fat free half & half (1 tbspn per cup) and s/f torani chocolate syrup with a dash of peppermint powder. oh.. it tastes like drinking a york peppermint pattie. There's tons of s/f syrups out there.. good in tea too (and if you can't convince your nutritionist to relent on the coffee tabu, tea has much less caffeine than coffee..).

Both my doc and nut said to mix 50/50 caf and decaf and enjoy - just watch what I put in it.

I LOVE coffee, but my surgeon said avoid the cream and sugar. I realized it wasn't coffee I loved so much....it was the flavored cream and sugar! So I started trying different substitutes that people recommended. I tried the sugar free hazelnut syrup and splenda. It was yucky to me. It tasted like chemicals. I tried adding sugar-free hot chocolate to the coffee (this wasn't bad with a little milK). I tried a few other combinations that were just disgusting and I almost gave up on coffee....Then, someone gave the suggestion about a Protein drink that tastes like coffee. I got it and I LOVE IT!!! The brand is Click. I bought it on-line. It does have caffeine in it (so drink extra water). I love the vanilla Latte. You mix it up with Water, heat it in the microwave and it is good. I don't have to add cream, sugar, or anything else. AND it has 15 grams of protein!! I also got the Mocha flavor which I didn't like as much - but it was okay. It does have 12 grams of carbs and some surgeons are strict on carbs, so be aware of that. But I have 12 oz. of the Click each morning and it's very satisfying to me.

I did wait until my 3rd week post-op to have caffeine.

Wow, thanks for all the insight!! Yeah, I knew it was dehydrating. But I have been a water drinker for years so I can drink enough water too. I love coffee and I like it black. I had a cup at work this morning and that's all I needed! So I will once in a while. I like hot tea too. Have had that in evening a few times since banding, I have many varieties on hand. I was glad to get back to work today. Had a little confrontation(I work with learning disabled individuals) but we're good. I even helped clean up as usual afterwards. I'm tired now tho! I was getting bored here at home :rolleyes3:
