August rush 2010!!!

We already have 2 other August threads going but let's all try to consolidate all of our thoughts and encouragement into one thread so that we can all support each other and face our fears and struggles together.

I was originally to be banded last March 2010 so I started posting there and I love how that thread is still going with many of them having great success and encouraging each other.

My name is Dee and after much hassle with my surgeons office staff I have a surgery date of 8/16.

I have an appointment with him on 8/3 and there I will discuss my concerns about aftercare and dealing with his staff. Hopefully, all will go well and I won't have to cancel my surgery and find another surgeon.

I have been going through this process now for over a year. I started out with NYU but found after I paid them $750.00 out of pocket that my insurance is out of network for them. They made promises but I didn't want to risk getting stuck with a humongous bill. I want to be thin and healthy not bankrupt.

I found another surgeon that accepts my ins. and he seems nice enough and is the Director of the bariactric program at his hospital but his staff has treated me like I'm begging for a free surgery.

Well anyway, I'm planning to start my pre-op liquid diet on 8/2 anyway on my own advice.

I'm looking for much support and encouragement and am willing to do the same for all of you August rush people.

Kellyodoran came up with the name August rush!!

Congrats everyone on their surgery's this week. Can't wait until the 30th. Had some bumps in the road this week. I am so sick. I've missed work all week. I went to the doctor probably two weeks ago and was told I just had allergies and that I would be fine. I was given an antibiotic and felt better a week later. Then this weekend started feel awful again. Got to see my PCP this time and she put me on a stronger anti-biotic she said to call if I dont feel better by tomorrow so that we can try something else. She wants me better ASAP so I dont have to reschedule my surgery. I do too. I am so bummed. I have eaten through my PTO time I was saving for the surgery at work. Now I'll be on Leave without pay the week after surgery. But, everything will be ok. I asked my hubby if he thought I should push the date back theres no way either of us want to do that. I've been waiting for this for so long. Good Luck to everyone and thanks to everyone for posting their stories love to hear every detail. :-)

Stay on top of this stuff RiahRiah !!! I have been crossing my fingers and "warding off" anyone with any kind of sniffles or anything so I don't have to reschedule surgery also. My day is the day after yours!!!

I keep hoping that yes, by this time next year, I will not only be celebrating a one year band anniversary and a 6 year no-smoking anniversary, but WEARING A BIKINI too!!! LOL.....WELL ONE CAN HAVE DREAMS.

That's exactly what we all have in common right now, DREAMS!! It's the first time that we have been able to believe that those dreams could be reality. You have a great dream and you are going to make it come true.

Oh, man, that sucks. I sure hope you get better quick so you don't have to reschedule. Over and above that it sucks that you are now into unpaid leave. I'm sorry you are going through this. It will be worth it in the end. Keep your chin up. :)

Hello Guys,

My name is Mandie, I have posted on other August boards, so I figured, why not post here too. My surgery date is Agust 25,2010. I am going through my week of high protein, low carbs, low fats, low calorie foods. I only have to do one day of liquids the day before my surgery and after surgery, I will be on 3 weeks of liquids. I purchased the Boost High Protein drink (vanilla and chocolate). I think that I am going to do a laxative Sunday morning (August 22nd) just because I am generally a constipated person and the thought of straining after surgery freaks me out. lol! Anyway, I know that's too much information, but it's definitely something that I am concerned about.

You Guys, I want a ticker! Can someone please explain to me how to set this up and running??

mbwalker... i just clicked on someones ticker and it sent me to a site where you can set up your own and then it gives a code to copy and paste to your profile info. dont know if thats the right/easiest way but worked for me. lol

Good luck to those having surgery today! I hope that you feel better soon RiahRiah, nothing worse than being sick. I am on day 12 of Optifast with an allowance of 2 cups of low carb veges a day and I have to say that I am getting fed up still have 9 days to go (surgery 30th Aug). Cooking meals for DH and the kids is getting more and more strained. When it came to bacon and eggs on Sunday I left them to do it themselves. I have a question, has anyone else been offered Plication with their band? My surgeon has suggested it and has left it to me to decide which way to go, I have been madly reading as much info as possible on the subject.

My name is Shelly. I was also banded 8/16. How are you feeling? I'm still sore and have gas pains. Its tough for me to get in all my fluids but I am trying. Have you found any protein drinks that you can tolerate? The sweet ones make me nauseated. I appreciate any advice you have!

Hi Shelly, fellow August 16th bandster here. I know how you feel about all the sweets. I normally have a sweet tooth but this liquid thing is killing me. I am literally sucking on pretzels and spitting them out to get some other flavor into my mouth. I unfortunately cannot have shakes until next Monday (a whole week of nothing but clear liquids). However, during my pre-op phase I used to spice up the shakes to take some of the sweetness out. Cinnamon is good with vanilla shakes and I like adding extracts (such as almond) to the chocolate ones. It doesn't take all the sweetness out but it does tone it down a bit.

It was tough for me to get the fluids in too and I ended up in the ER day 4 post op because I was dehydrated. Keep the fluids going!

Hi Shelly, I too was banded on 8/16. I am sore but am starting to feel better with less gas pain. It is tough to get in all of the fluids and the protein shakes are getting old. I try just putting them in an insulated cup and sipping on them all day. As for flavors I like the Atkins diet ones the best. A little higher in calories but right now I am concentrating on just getting them down. lol Good luck and keep up the good work!

Wow! Is this month ever going fast! I am already on day 10 of my 14 day Optifast Pre-op diet (Surgery is Aug 24!!). The first few days were hard mentally but now I have to force myself to drink the shakes, I'm just not hungry! The vanilla flavored Optifast I find horrible! Thank goodness for Coconut flavoring... instant Pina Colada! haha I am down 15 pounds so far! Woohoo

Congrats to everyone who has been Banded so far this month! Keep posting your surgery info, it's really nice to read about what's coming! (especially the pain free posts!)

Good Luck to everyone being banded in the next 11 days!!!

Take care everyone!
