  1. If your insurance paid for the band to begin with, they will almost surely pay for problems you run into like erosion, slippage, infection, etc. Assuming your policy doesn't change between the time you have the surgery and when you run into the problem. If your insurance didn't pay for the band and you are going self-pay, it's highly unlikely that your insurance will cover any problems you run into. Good to have a plan or idea of how you'd pay for a port revision or band removal / replacement if you do go the self-pay route.
  2. I would like to thank all of you for your replies. I was on the obesityhelp.com. Most people there opt for the gastric bypass and swear by it. I received messages from people putting down the band whenever I brought it up. I was so happy to hear about this site. This site is so much more positive. I would prefer the lap band and if it is successful, I am all for it. Thank you all.
  3. Tanna, I do understand what you are saying. It seems that everyone thinks their procedure is the best and they stand up for what they believe. I think a couple of people are just cutting loose with their beliefs, mainly because we have to tiptoe around all the other sites, not to start any wars. But here, we seem safer to speak our minds. I myself believe that in time, the lapband will be the preferred procedure (the "Gold Standard") here in the US, just like it is everywhere else in the world. But until it is, we have to listen to the incorrect information that the bypassers (and doctors!) dole out to people researching WLS. It is a daily thing. Here is what happens. Someone will ask a basic question regarding the lapband. Some RNYer will say it doesn't work if you like sweets, or you have a low or high BMI, if you graze, etc. Then they say that at the end of the struggle, chances are that you will fail and have to revert to getting the bypass. And that the bypass is a permanent cure without having to do any work. When we step in and try to correct some of their misinformation (very nicely), we get a war. It is a struggle to get the correct information out to people without starting some war. Like I said, everyone thinks their surgery is the best. Having said all that, I do believe that the RNY is best for some people. But I personally think that the lapband can work as well, if not better, with some people that get the bypass. I just want people to know that they have an option and I want them to know the correct facts. Then they can do their own research and decide what is best for them. That is where the animosity comes from on the lapband side. It is a struggle to get the correct information out there.

Welcome! I too had my heart originally set on the Sleeve. However, my insurance and my doctor wouldn't approve it. My surgeon knew I had a history of heartburn and gerd - said that if you have that the sleeve may complicate it. In addition I was a revision to RNY from the band and it had higher complication rates.... I had my surgery back in August (revision) and original band surgery in April 2008. I honestly wish I would have had RNY originally I was scared of the malaborption as well as "re-routing'. However, I neded up with many complications from the band and ended up going through a tough revision surgery due to my fears. My original surgeon always pointed out that "band was reversable". Hindsight, why would I want to be fat again? and removing the band would do that. Iended up gaining back all of my weight plus some after band surgery. I'm down 47 pounds in two months (today is my anniversary - woot) and couldn't be happier! Good luck with your decision...let me know if you have any questions.
  5. I am having such a hard time getting to stage 4, regular foods no starches. My gastric bypass surgery was Jan 28th of this year. I’ve been mostly on purée foods, some exceptions in certain foods but the most concerning thing is my new stomach hates meat! I am definitely not meeting my protein goals. Protein shakes are hard too. They did a X-ray with the barium and said everything looked fine other than really bad acid reflux. I’m taking little sips, bites and not drinking before or after meals in the time limits. So far I regret the surgery even though I’ve lost 50lbs. Seems I’m always vomiting, in pain or so fatigue to where I feel like I’m gonna have a seizure. It gets easier right?

Brad, great job. Aren't the new clothing choices great? I love that you get to revise your goal. I am hoping I will get to mine and decide to revise! Thanks for the post.
  7. Hi all I had a gastric bypass on 28th January 2012 I've lost 65lbs so far but feel totally miserable. Getting fed up of not being able to eat much expect crackerbreads without feeling sick . Feeling very low when I see everyone being able to go out for meals with there partners and enjoying life when I'm stuck in this life now I don't regret the surgery because the weight loss is fantastic, just feels that my life has come to a halt

    Bypass

I had RNY gastric bypass surgery 4 years ago. Eating lettuce became acceptable after week 9 according to my surgeons directions. But go easy on the salad dressing - go with dressings that have minimal fat and sugar. Chewing is a natural craving and your desire for salad may be related to that craving. Some people experience problems in meeting their daily protein, vitamin and fluid requirements. But it sounds like in your case these problems are extreme and there may be an underlying medical condition that needs to be treated as well. According to the internet: Nausea and vomiting are the most common complaints after bariatric surgery, and they are typically associated with inappropriate diet and noncompliance with a gastroplasty diet (ie, eat undisturbed, chew meticulously, never drink with meals, and wait 2 hours before drinking after solid food is consumed). If these symptoms are associated with epigastric pain, significant dehydration, or not explained by dietary indiscretions, an alternative diagnosis must be explored. One of the most common complications causing nausea and vomiting in gastric bypass patients is anastomotic ulcers, with and without stomal stenosis. Ulceration or stenosis at the gastrojejunostomy of the gastric bypass has a reported incidence of 3% to 20%. Although no unifying explanation for the etiology of anastomotic ulcers exists, most experts agree that the pathogenesis is likely multifactorial. These ulcers are thought to be due to a combination of preserved acid secretion in the pouch, tension from the Roux limb, ischemia from the operation, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use, and perhaps Helicobacter pylori infection. Evidence suggests that little acid is secreted in the gastric bypass pouch; however, staple line dehiscence may lead to excessive acid bathing of the anastomosis. Treatment for both marginal ulcers and stomal ulcers should include avoidance of NSAIDs, antisecretory therapy with proton-pump inhibitors, and/or sucralfate. In addition, H pylori infection should be identified and treated, if present. So condensing this down general advice (coordinating with your surgical staff) might be to avoid NSAIDs (such as aspirin), use proton pump inhibitors (such as Prilosec) and have yourself tested for Helicobacter pylori infection.
  10. I've had revision from band to RNY. I've had band for 8 years before I had it removed. It almost killed me. Now have RNY Despite some problems the sweet taste of being normal weight makes it worth it especially after being obese for fifty years
  11. I'm not diabetic, but I had a revision. My surgery was on a Wednesday and I took off a week and a half. I have a desk job. Good luck!
  12. Hi all I'm usually on the gastric sleeve pages but I thought I might be able to help a bit, I was a lap band to sleeve revision, the gastric sleeve is also know to cause gurd so if you suffer from that with the lap band there's a chance you might with the sleeve , do to complications my sleeve twisted and also have gurd, I'm having gastrectomy with gastrojejunostomy. On the 21st
  13. I am two weeks post bypass. Healing good, no major problems better chewing can't solve. I can't wait to get back in the local rec center pool, are any of you swimmers and did you get back into the pool quickly? My Dr. says two more weeks, any suggestions for pace? I know I will want to overdo it, but will restrain myself.
  14. Even though my insurance left me high and dry, I am still going along with the plan. Self-pay, $20,000. Dr. Blackstone of Scottsdale Bariatric Center in AZ is doing it. Her office is ranked in the top three in the country. It was a toss up between this and the RNY bypass. I have done all the preliminary tests, few to go before the surgery. Would like to know from others what to expect the day of the surgery, and what to expect after. Surgery October 9, 2006.

  16. The vertical gastric sleeve surgery is what actually got me to consider weight loss surgery to begin with, after my husband had been bringing it up for 2 years prior. The weight loss is supposedly faster, but tapers off sooner than gastric bypass. I was going to have VSG myself until the surgeon did my EDG and said it wasn't an option for me (I have an unusually shaped stomach). So for the first 4 months on this journey I spent all my time over at gastricsleeve.com and it was an awesome forum with wonderful people. Highly recommend checking it out.
  17. I'm on my 5th week after getting gastric bypass. It's a struggle to stay hydrated, and to get in the necessary protein. So far my experience has been ruff but it will get better. Stay optimistic!!!!

  19. Walk walk walk! It sounds stupid and everyone says it! I flew 3 days post-op. Not painful but exhausting. Wear compression socks and move your feet around. I walked so much in the hospital and didn't have any gas pain! I had a band 1 1/2 years ago and the gas pain was the worst pain I had ever felt. So I walked and 2alked and walked. Worked! No gas pain at all. I am not 5 days post-op from a band to sleeve revision. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N920A using BariatricPal mobile app
  20. I'm getting the band in Tuesday but I'm ready so many people are getting switched over to the sleeve. My doctor does less bands and more sleeves now. I'm concerned about not absorbing Calcium as I have some osteopenia. My mom had gastric bypass years ago and can't absorb calcium and has osteoporosis. My sister recently has had issues with her sleeve she needs surgery for scar tissue. Too much info out there. Me being a R N doesn't help. Are people happy with their bands? Why did you choose the band? Anyone recently get banded and why that choice?

    Revision Scheduled for Feb. 25

First off, I'm getting a revision from sleeve to bypass on Feb 9th! When had sleeve there was an amazing amount of people in a group who all went though the ups and downs together since we all started the journey together. This is a closed/secret group for everyone who is going to have bypass surgery in February 2016! I created a new one for bypass & I'd would LOVE to have you join in with us! Just go to Facebook and search my name LaNae Davis Petersen, send me a friend request. I can then send you an invite to secret page and then I'll remove you back off my friends list It's meant to be a positive group who we can all be going through the same things at the same tim on this journey! The goals will be to provide support, bounce questions off each other, have somewhere safe to share on the days that aren't so great, and share our victories on this journey! MOST importantly it's all confidential, unless you are in this group people can't see the group, who's in it or what the posts are. 22. So I'm about a month and a half post band to sleeve revision (5/10 surgery) and I'm feeling very frustrated and confused about my lack of weight loss. I started at 236 and shortly after surgery (2 weeks postop) was down to 220. I'm now down to 214. I haven't moved for about a month. I was logging my food whole hog at the beginning but fell off the wagon for a couple of weeks but in the past week have gotten back at it in order to get a handle on things. At my last follow up appt my surgeon asked how much Protein I was taking in (when he found out I stalled) and I told him I was aiming for around 60 grams. He told me to only aim for 40. That seems counterintuitive to me especially being pre-diabetic with PCOS. His office doesn't have a NUT so I only have him to rely on. At this point I'm beyond frustrated. He wants me down another 20 lbs by the time I go back to see him in a month. Everyone else on here seems to have the weight melt off and I'm sitting here much like I was before with the band - feeling very frustrated and wondering why I did this. I'm committed to tracking my intake, getting more exercise, and getting my protein in but beyond that I'm at a loss. Any suggestions - especially from those who have done a band to sleeve conversion?? Thanks for "listening".....
  23. Hi Baseballmom...Thank you for your kind words and concern. I went to the dietician today and we did a test whereas i step on a scale and it tells all sorts of info about my body (fat percentage; how many calories i should be eating; bmi; etc). Well, she discovered that I am doing everything right...the problem is my metabolic makeup. From what she explained to me, out of every 100 patients, there is always that "1" who has that weird metabolism...well, unfortunately, I am that "1" person. Ugh...frustrating and not much anyone can do for me. She thinks even a revision may be a waste of time! Oh well...at least I kno it wasnt me doin something wrong!
  24. I've been reading a lot of posts on this board, books, and anything I can get my hands on. I have a BMI of 58 (pre 10% weight loss before surgery) and it has been mentioned that doctors won't band someone with my BMI, even if I lose my 10%. I have no health conditions and I want to get this weight off before I develop any issues. I don't want to have bypass surgery because of the risks. Anyone out there who can help?

    Cant decide / please help

Your story could be my very own. I ended up moving from lapbandtalk to verticalsleevetalk and getting a sleeve. Couldn't be happier. BTW, according to Dr Aceves nurse, they do just as many band to sleeve revisions as they do sleeves...
