Something nagging me
SouthernSleever replied to feedyoureye's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Most adults are lactose intollerant anyway we just don't realize it. Skin problems, gas, runny nose we dont' associate. Not many of us 30 year olds were meant to be still nursing (much less nursing from a cow) by design. Goat's milk is MUCH easier to tollerate as it is very close to human milk. If you can tollerate goat's milk you can tollerate goat's cheese and usually yogurt is easy on the body. Check out Coconut milk also for fluids. Beans are an excellent source of protien and you may consider adding either foul or fish into your diet. I was a veg head for years in my teens but added back in f&f because I was lacking in protien. You can also put some Peanut Butter in shakes or peanut flour. Where there's a will, there's a way. -
Need Help...starving
transforming jlaroux replied to donnapa's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It sounds like you're feeling better, but I also wanted to let you know that split pea Soup (cambells even) has a lot of Protein and is pretty low cal. I ate it alot post op. I eat the greek yogurt post fill now, also, if you're concerned about the thickness, add some milk and blend it together. Only a day and a half and just think of the boost in weight loss!!! -
Just Banded Tuesday - Feels like an Elephant on my breastbone
Justaprettyface replied to Justaprettyface's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Feeling much better today. (Although I didn't flap my arms like a chicken) I did get out and about. Of all places, I went food shopping. The smells and sights actually didn't bother me too much. I'm starting to feel hungry. I've been just having jello, popsicles, water & decaf tea. I had a yogurt, but it's not sugar free. Can not find any sugar free yogurts. The doctor allowed me to start full liquids yesterday. I would love something to chew, but honestly I can wait. I noticed I've dropped 6 lbs. I'm keeping it hush hush in the house. That makes me excited! Hope everyone is doing well... Hugs -
I had my surgery on 7/1, I am eating about 1/2 -3/4 of food a day. Plus getting between 60 and 80 grams of Protein per day. Here is what I usually eat. 1 greek yogurt/ 1/2 cream of cream of wheat 1 glass of V8 lunch egg drop Soup dinner 3oz of grilled grouper (mushy) 1 tomato slice (no skin just the center ( chewed until mushy consistency) pinch of feta cheese Last night I was starving so I had about 1/2 c of refried Beans with a pinch of cheese, 1 t of guacamole. My calories range between 600-800 per day. There is a list of mushy foods that really helped me at the grocery store. What I am worried about am I eating too much.. I feel no restriction at all, I am finally feeling what a lot of people on here are feeling. I eat when I am satisfied and not to full. I was so worried about everything and my doctor told me " stop worrying and live you life" So that is what I have been doing. I have stopped the Protein drinks (I know a bad idea, but I am still getting the protein I need daily.) My question is do you think I should be doing anything different? Or is there any suggestions? I still have had no bread, Pasta, crackers anything crunchy, no sweets, and no potatoes. Like I am not a schedule person. So like it is 5pm and I have eaten cream of wheat and a cheese stick. Of course Water. I have been only been eating when hungry. Thanks in advance!!

I've been constipated for 2 years! Drink lots of water, and try adding Benefibre (or any other such product) to your protien shakes. Also, believe it or not, bran cereal works wonders. I hate bran, so I sprinkle it on top of frozen yogurt.

Protein first -- always?
elcee replied to Dikotomy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I could never eat like that. That is not "normal" eating , in fact I think it is really dysfunctional. I eat normal food in whatever order I want. Casseroles with vegies in, stirfry's with meat and vegies mixed up, rissotos, Pasta dishes such as lasagne etc etc. I got banded so that I could stop dieting and eat food the same way that a "normal" person does.So far it's working for me. If I had to eat like that i would have given up long ago. I do sometimes eat strange things at strange times e.g lunch today was homemade muesli with greek yogurt. Full of unprocessed oats, pepitas, sultanas, linseeds etc. No added sugar like in the commercial varieties. Yum. -
Pureed Foods = Disgusting!
elcee replied to Julie5's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I did not put anything into a blender other than vegie Soup.My mushies consisted of:- yogurt, soft cheese, eggs, minced meat, oats, weetbix, veggies mashed with gravy, over cooked pasta(made some great tuna lasagne),baby fruit etc. I agree that putting a meal into a blender and having it all mushed together sounds horrible. -

I am totally addicted to fat free Greek yogurt with a spoon of vanilla sugar free Jell-O pudding. it tastes just like cheesecake to me. I add a Splenda and mix the powdered pudding right into the yogurt...I'm in heaven. High protein, low-cal (about 125 calories) and tasteeeee! -

well, congrats on your surgery. sounds like you are healing well. the rash i am not sure about,i had one around my incisions, but it was from the bandaid type Patches they placed over them that irritated my skin. are you drinking Protein shakes, if not you need to do so. just sip them slowly. you are most likely still swollen, can last up to a month. that is why they don't want you to advance your diet too quickly so you don't do any damage or cause yourself problems. my mushy stage, i ate small curd cottage cheese, apple sauce, pudding, creamy soups yogurts. if you go to www.lapband.com, they have a ton of recipes people have submitted for all the stages, so things do not get so boring. try to drink as much Fluid as you can, getting dehydrated is not a good thing for your digestion. try the Crystal light packets in your Water. thanksgiving might be a little tough. you could always puree everything i know does not sound appealing, but at least you could eat it all I don't even try to eat white bread of any kind, i can eat whole wheat bread as long as it is small bites and i chew well. i don't have issues with Pasta, rice, or even popcorn. i chew it all up well. i can eat tortillas too, just don't do that often. hope all goes well with you, and no question is too much. that is what we are all here for! to give and get advice. -
Angry, Frustrated, Hungry

Some suggestions for those who don't like the Protein shake mixes. Try an unflavored Protein powder you can get them from GNC. Here are some recipes I've tried and love. 6 or 7 sliced frozen strawberries 1 scoop protein powder 1 sm banana 1/2 c plain yogurt Blend really well 1/2 c Water, crystal light, or juice You can also add 1 tbs cocoa powder, yummy 6 coffee ice cubes, break them up a bit before putting in the blender 1 scoop of protein powder 1/4 c of liquid creamer, milk, or yogurt 1 tbs cocoa powder Slenda or other sweetener to taste 1/2 c cold coffee Blend well 1 apple, cores and cut up 1/2 cup of crystal light, water or juice 3 ice cubes, more if you want 1 sm banana 1 tsp cinnamon extract Blend well Try your own flavor combinations. Using ice really helps and blend well. 1/2 c of yogurt -
I am so frustrated!! I lost 11 pounds during the month before surgery-3 weeks liquids. Surgery was on June 27th. I went down 6 lbs by the end of that week. Woo Hoo!!!! I've NEVER lost that much in a week. Of course I ate next to nothing because anesthesia always depresses my appetite for a week afterwards. I did get every drop of Water in during that time. Okay why am I so frustrated? I went down 2 lbs one single day during the past two weeks, but those 2 lbs have played games with me since that day up 1, up 2, up 3...I never know. I have kept track of every bite that goes in my mouth. I'm on soft Proteins now, not allowed any carbs except veggies and dairy which is great for my diabetes. I am averaging between 600 and 800 calories per day, between 20 and 40 carbs, 70 - 120g Protein, and under 25 g fat. I'm exercising 30 -45 min daily; nothing too strenuous yet. I know what you're all thinking- that's not enough calories. Well I'm 54 and very motivated. I feel like this is my last chance and I'm just trying so hard. Forget the band...how could I gain 1-3 lbs during the past two weeks eating like this. I feel hunger pains several times a day and I gulp water to help them go away. I called my nutritionist today and she was very nice. She wants me to up my calories to 1000 and see if that helps. I'm not sure what to eat? If I could have cream of wheat, oatmeal, potatoes, or whole grain breads it would be easy. Thanks in advance to all of you out there who I know will give me some words of wisdom. On a very positive note - I've reduced my insulin by half!!! Wow-my health was my main and most important reason for having this surgery. And it is helping no doubt. I'll be thrilled when I get "optimization"(new term for restriction..lol) out of my band. Thanks for reading and feel free to ask any questions if you just don't get my point! Try blending your soup so that it doesn't consist of chunks and watery liquid. Also soup isn't one of the best foods post band as it is normally a slider - you should focus on solid foods that fill you up for longer.Maybe the rice is swelling and causing an issue so you could try skipping the rice. I've never actually had rice in soup before! Eat your cereal with just a dash of milk or try eating it with yogurt instead.

hard time transitioning
btrieger replied to Ange2992's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I got over it by not having the extra food readily available and keeping my mind occupied so I don't have time to watch the clock. Don't have a lot of ready to eat foods in the house except may fat free yogurt or the like. Only cook enough for 1 serving at a time. That way you aren't picking at leftovers. When the hunger hits, take a walk or brush your teeth. The walk will give you time to get over the hunger and nobody wants to eat right after brushing. -

I would wash the area clean, rinse well, pat dry, and appy Caladryl. It helps the itchies. Don't but calamine lotion, it might not work. Th is has Benadryl in it. Over the Counter Benadryl, or Zyrtec couldn't hurt either. Pressure can always be normal, everyday is a different day with the Band ! So you might have a Fantastic Day or a little tight one, Try letting some ice chips just melt in your mouth. A little at a time. You will get your fluids, and it might take the swelling down. Mushie stage is: Cottage cheese, chicken salad, tuna salad, egg salad, anything that you can put in a food processor, and puree (keep it moist, and Low cal) applesauce, Thicker soups, S.F. pudding, Yogurt,. shakes. that's a start, I'm sure you will get more.. But try those ice chips. Shirley. -

Weight Loss Frustration
iegal replied to Supersweetums's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello Super; Wow - I think you weight loss is tremendous! I am going to repeat good advice already provided. First some people loose weight slowly, but remember the weight is GONE. I too was a self pay for VSG but double your amount as I did my surgery in the US. Worth every penny I spent. My advice? Cut out the carbs - you have a window of great opportunity for the first six months, or so I am told by my surgeon. Create new habits. First of all you should be careful of what you eat right now so early out. Up your protien - eat eggs, greek yogurt, protien shakes as you are still healing. Try canned tuna fish or soft fish. Eliminate potatoes, rice, bread while you are loosing weight. I put the items back into my diet during the holidays...and my weight loss this entire month is around 5 pounds. Yippee I lost weight, but not like I was when watching what I eat.. I am limiting carbs (as I eat a half a biscuit with gravy) starting tomorrow again so I can reach goal (over 70 lbs) by my six month checkup. Up your Protein also to at least 60 grms. Take your Multivitamins which include a b complex suppliment for B Vitamins (B12 is important). Once you are maintaining - you can have a few chips, bread or potatoes as part of your regular meals...but not while loosing weight. Lastly - are you excercising? Walk, walk, walk. Amazing how much easier it is to move now. Get resitance bands (TJ MaXX has cheap) and go to YouTube to follow some easy moves for home. Those few extra burn of calories will make a difference. Muscle burns more calories than fat and you need to burn the fat. No need to go crazy (I hate the gym) but now I go to walk the treadmill or elipse. Wish I was like LilDiva and moved 45 minutes a day. Love her! Keep your spirits up. You are not a failure, nor is your surgery. You did not gain the weight in a month, nor will you loose it all in a month. No regrets...I love my sleeve! -

Travel advice wanted
chloes_countdown replied to Jess55's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Jess55, I travel a lot for work & have flown several times since 12/20 surgery. Here are a few tips & gotchas: - I take my Water bottle. I'm so used to having that thing around me now that its just too weird not to have it within arms reach! Make sure its empty when going through security & fill it after you're thru the checkpoints. At best, you only get a small cup of water on the plane but I get so dry. nice to always have water with me - Pack Snacks. Hardest thing about being on the road for me is eating every 3 hours - it just doesn't jive with most business meetings. Unfortunately, my fav snack greek yogurt will never make it thru security so I throw a couple Protein bars in my bag. Nuts work, too. This way *you* can control what/when you eat & not have to be at the mercy of some else's sched. - Pack Protein powder. I actually have shakes I like. I bought a little divided container (its in the baby section at your local chain store - moms use it for baby powder) so I can easily carry 3 servings with me. This I know I can get some protein in - regardless of what may be on the menu. Good luck & safe travels. chloe -
My dietitian recommended water Mellon, berries, cantaloupes and those high in fiber while avoiding the more sugary fruits. I told her that I like cherries and she said sure, unfortunately cherries are heavy on my stomach. When eating fruits its best to eat with a protein, cottage cheese, yogurt etc. Always check with your plan of course.

yup, i just had to be on liquids 3 days then could go to mushies. eggs, yogurt, cottage cheese. Lots of protien in cottage cheese. I lived on it for a week!

Try kefir. Super tasty with more Probiotics than drinkable yogurt. Sent from my SM-G925V using the BariatricPal App

12 days since banding...
dragonfly yogi replied to kellbell2011's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello...I too was banded March 2...i am on a full liquid diet, I eat mashed up homemade soups and yogurt. This morning I has a hard boiled egg (chopped up very thin) and it went down good, no problems. I am a sweet person and love dessert, a few timed i have had a spoonful of vanilla ice cream...the coldness feel really good after my 1/2 cup of dinner...in 2 more week i will be moving into soft foods, and then a week after that i have an appt for my first fill.....Good luck on your adventure!!! -
I'm on day 4 of my 2 week liquid pre op diet, and I'm having similar issues with digestion and stomach cramps. I've also had 2 really intense charlie horses since being on this diet. What are you having for liquids? My diet is 3 Glucose Control Boost drinks and 2 100 cal ff yogurts. The thought of Boost and yogurt is making me gag at this point, and I still have 10 more days. I am sooooo hungry, but I want to make my liver as small as possible. I just hoping that the hunger goes away post op.

It is indeed hard!! And I too envy people whom get to eat one protein rich meal, yogurt etc. but it does get easier as time goes on because surgery is right around the corner. hang in there!
