  1. I agree with the others that this is so unfortunate for you and we all wish you a full recovery. This appears to be the which came first story, the chicken or the egg? Where and when did the infection begin? Our bodies are designed to reject parasitic items and it does appear yours did the same. My only concern with someone who may have gone with another type of WLS is this. If the infection was not a result of the band, what would the infection have done to a bypass or sleeve? Would all the plumbing have to be removed and the patient have to live out their lives with feeding tubes? If I were making a bet on where the problem began, I'd have to go with the band rejection theory? Although, why would it? This is definitely an example of how unique each of our bodies are and how the body reacts to any kind of stimuli.
  2. I am getting a revision from lap band to sleeve. I got my lap band in 2010. Everything worked fine until I had minor complications almost a year later and after I had my daughter. So it really isnt working for me anymore. I have almost gained all my weight back. I look forward to my journey with my sleeve. However, my doctor's office submitted my paperwork to Aetna on Oct 24 and still havent heard anything. Ive checked with the coordinator and Aetna and they just tell me its pending. Today is the 10th business day from when it was submitted. Aetna said additional information was submitted on 11/2 and told me to check on Monday. Anyone else playing the waiting game? Im ready to get this party started lol
  3. Hi, my name is Ronda. I have been a bariatric patient for 10 years now. Initially, I had RNY done and lost 85 pounds with it. My maintenance was steady for about 5 years, but started declining--regained weight, bone loss, anemia, circulatory and cardiac problems. I have hypertension, but am severely allergic to those drugs for treatment. Weightloss and management is the only way I have of keeping my health in good shape. In 2007, I went to a new bariatric surgeon to seek an evaluation on my prognosis; he said revision surgery was needed to attend to severely stretched stoma. Insurance always held strong opposition to any treatment for my problems. This visit, Dr. tried 2 times to appeal the insurance for treatment--failed both times. Some time passed, and I had changed employment status and my healthcare needs were being covered on State Medicaid. This time, I learned that my bariatric treatment was covered under my Medicaid plan, but would need evaluations from the pulmonologist, cardiologist, psychologist, and dietician/nutritionist, in addition to following a dr-supervised weightloss plan with my pcp--I started all of this last September. It took solid 9 months of negotiating coverage and ultimate surgery that I had with my doctor on May 31st here in Phoenix. AZ. I am 3 weeks postop now. My loss is 23 pounds, and still mostly blender shakes and some pureed foods. I find that I don't really like what I ate preoperatively. Most of the foods taste too sweet--even if sugarfree. I had laparoscopic surgery so the healing is great--just unable to lift anything yet. I am driving, and doing most of my chores as long as I don't lift anything over 15 pounds. I walk the malls, and try to keep busy per dr's orders. Yet that is a challenge now that we have 110 or hotter days coming this summer. I still keep at it, tho. I know my surgery was a gift from God--in every sense of the word, as was the initial RNY procedure back in 2001. Both surgeries saved my life! Forever, will I be indebted to the Powers that Be.

    Its muscle not fat right?

It’s snowing heavily outside so I’m spending some time on lap band talk, yep even the men’s room  and came across your post I was in a similar position I dropped 130 lbs in 13 months and was my surgeon’s star lap band patient Basically I allowed myself to become too restricted, which played havoc with my stomach and overall health. I need a complete unfill . I wasn’t able to get another fill for about 8 weeks and it took me months to build up to a sweet spot again. I regained 40 lbs. Keep working out, make better food choices but get back to your doctor asap. Without the proper restriction it’s too easy to fall into old habits. I had been lauded as one of my surgeon’s first patients w/ a large amount of weight to lose who was having success w/ the lap band ( that office is very pro- bypass) so it definitely hurt my pride to show a gain. It was helpful to just be honest. “Dr., I’ve increased my activity level ( jogging and aerobics) trying to combat the gain but I am still able to eat too much and have been making poor food choices.” With the right fill and upping my activity level even more and falling back into good bandster habits I was able to take off the 40 lbs in about 6 months. I was actually in a smaller size at the same weight this time down b/c I was working out so much more instead of primarily counting on restriction and a little walking to help me lose. Take action !!
  5. That's a fair point, but assuming you have a bypass at 72 it's not like you have to worry about the arthritis getting worse for the next 50 years. If you were in your 20s and 30s that could be 50 years of undertreated arthritis where you can't have nsaids and limited steroids, which could have a huge difference on quality of life. Especially something like RA where you should be aggressive early on It's a difficult situation and I don't think there is a clear cut answer

    Q About Plication

^^^ explains the differences between the sleeve & plication. plication is an unknown, experimental procedure that folds the stomach.. it can cause scarring, ulcers, and other stuff & if you have complications, they don't know if they can fix it or switch it over to a different surgery (like the sleeve or bypass). it also sounds really painful, because the doctor said that the stomach can get so inflamed that it rips itself open from the sitches which requires another surgery. i'd rather have the sleeve.. the sleeve also helps with dealing with physical hunger. hope that helped. but to answer your question.. you're not crazy to want help with your weight problem.. but i don't think that you're very big.. you could eat healthy- which you would have to do if you got surgery anyway- and exercise.. and your problem would be taken care of.. but there are people who have this surgery that are 200lb.. i mean.. i dunno your specific situation, but if i weighed 200lb, i would be pretty happy & look forward to exercising to get the rest of it off & not having to worry about excess skin & stuff.... but you know what they say.. different strokes for different folks. one thing you may consider, instead of surgery, would be going to mexico, canada or europe & having that gastric balloon thing put in your stomach.. http://www.obesitysurgerycentre.com/procedures-right-for-you/gastric-balloon/ << there's info on that procedure. what they do is put a silicone balloon in your stomach & fill it with saline or air & it makes your stomach small, like if you were to have had a gastric bypass or sleeve.. it's fully reversable, too.. only down side that i've read is that it can only stay in your stomach for 6 months.. but.. you could be to your goal by then & it'd be easier to maintain your weight... so something to consider! good luck to you, whatever you decide to do!
  7. I'm doing all the jumping through hoops for the insurance company before I can get a sleeve to RNY revision. Looks like tomorrow is the big day for you!!! Congratulations!
  8. Hello! I am also scheduled for 9/20. I am still awaiting approval though, which is super frustrating, but I am hoping this all works out. I am not getting bypass, but sleeve. Yes, it's been a long process, but I feel blessed for the opportunity and excited for the changes to come!
  9. I posted back in August about my surgery getting canceled because of a covid surge in my area. I was devastated and facing losing my insurance. As luck would have it, I got to keep my insurance another month and was rescheduled for tomorrow. I have been trying really hard not to get my hopes up, but I just had my pre-op appointment and so far everything is a go. I’m crossing every appendage I have that tomorrow goes off without a hitch. I’m supposed to check in at the hospital at 10 am.
  10. Wow, that sounds horrific, sorry you experienced this. Complications from ANY weight loss surgery whether it be band, bypass, sleeve or ds can be horrible. Also, they can get very expensive too, again sorry this happened to you.
  11. I am wondering if there is anyone that has had the RNY Gastric Bypass or Has Lost a whole lot of Weight that has some good used Jeans sizes 26 and size 24 that they are trying to get rid of- I would like some good Used Jeans Sizes 26 and sizes 24. Channing
  12. Absolutley! We have to accept at least a little......no really mroe than a little responsibility for our weight gain and subsequently ourweight loss. Naturally the surgeons would love to sell us more than one WLS. They will just keep getting richer and richer. Studies show the results are about the same at 5 years. I have a friend who had bypass and her daughter then her son then her husband had lapband. The 3 of them are doing great....she gained back about 80 percent of her weight back and consulted the surgeon about banding. He told her there is nothing wrong with her original stomach/surgery, she's just overfeeding it. We all know this could be our scenerio easily as well.
  13. I went to a meeting at a hospital, got all the paperwork, and dates for 2 required seminars for the lap band or gastric bypass, in that packet you will get all the info u need, psycolgical evaluation, 6month weight list from your doctor go to doc to get weighed every month 4 6 mos. doctor letter, medical neccesity letter, pre op test, and meeting for the surgery then surgery date then walla !I'ts a long process most insurance want u to do all of these things, plan ahead good luck

    Just call me... newbie :o)

I don't know of any disadvantages. There is a whole list of disadvantages for the band and the gastric bypass. I revised from the band to sleeve and I am really happy that I did it before the band did damage to my stomach.

    For Curiousity Sake...

I depend upon the band to take away ALL my hunger and cravings, mentally, and to control my portion sizes which I happy to say it does........I don't count calories, have not for over 2 years now...... just make wise food choices with what little I am able to eat.... I am unable to stick with any plan and eat a measured amount of food....I need the band to do that for me.....and it does.... If I were to get a un-fill, it would all be a disaster for me....I depend upon the band for everything....that's why I had the surgery in the first place, was unable to loose weight without it no matter what diet I tried.... Mosts posts you read about people "Failing" and gaining their weight back can usually be linked to some medical issue where they needed a un-fill or band revision....OR they never where in the Green Zone in the first place and depended upon their own selves and discipline for the weight loss.... But with the bands adjusted as it is...it would be IMPOSSIBLE for me to gain any weight back...I know, I have put it to the test and it was a no-go...could not over eat....

    Tricare North - Bariatric Help

I am Tricare North Standard. In 2009 I was 5'2", 253 lbs., BMI 46 with HBP, cancer, and depression. Approved for lapband in a day. They required my weight history, mental health eval, other things were doctor requirements. I lost about 80 lbs. and kept it off for 6 years. Band started giving me issues with my esophagus and needs to come out. TriCare approved removal in a day, denied a revision to bypass. However, my doc did a peer to peer; on the website it looks like they have now approved the revision. That's not official yet, but if it is then it only took about four days for them to make that happen.

    Just call me... newbie :o)

The band is awful. I'm revising to VSG for all the reasons everyone stated. I sure hope it's as amazing as it sounds. Not hungry, full after a few bites, low risk of complications.. that plus my 2 hr workouts and I'm gonna be healthy in no time! can't wait. SIGN ME UP
  18. I chose the sleeve along with DH, we chose together. . .i had researched all the different wls and the sleeve seemed the most safest, economical and ideal. . . I really like the idea that once your healed you can literally eat whatever (within reason of course) and still lose weight. . . sorta like eat and go. . . with RNY (bypass) you have your plumbing rearranged and then have to watch everything going into your mouth or you pay the painful price of dumping syndrome. . . with the band, you spend money with fills/unfills, risk infections at the port site, and possibly end up in the hospital with slippages and so on. . . the sleeve to me is the way to go. . . the choice is yours and good luck with you decisions
  19. I'm choosing the sleeve because it's less evasive, with no re-routing of the intestines. Also with the sleeve you can eventually eat anything, whereas the bypass limits you and there is possible "dumping".
  20. I am getting the Realize band in 5 days... my wife and I are getting banded on the same day. We've been on the pre-op diet for 3 days, and I've already lost 3 lbs. I've read horror stories about ALL of the different weight-loss surgeries (not just banding), but I seem to hear many more positive stories than negative. That's really all I have to go on. My doctor chose the newest Realize for me, and he's had gastric bypass himself, so I feel that he knows what he's doing. My wife and I are both excited... I'm a little more nervous than she is, since I've never had any kind of surgery before. Wish us luck! Doodle

@@YngGram - thank you for that information. Also congratulations on the loss and I hope you get approved for the revision!
  22. Hi all, Like most of you, I'm a veteran of the weight loss wars! I joined Weight Watchers for the first time when I was 13. I've got the books (Covert Bailey, Jean Nidetch, Susan Powter, Dr. Phil), I've got the exercise tapes and DVDs (Gilad, Tae-Bo, The Core), I've got the pants in six different sizes. And all because I haven't been able to get the upper hand in my relationship with food. Fortunately, I think I'm now on the right track. I started attending a hospital-based clinical weight loss education program in September 2008. I met with my surgeon for the first time that November. I did my consults in December and January, submitted to insurance in February, and got approval in March. I had my lap-band placed on April 8, 2009, spent one night in the hospital, was off work for one week, and so far, so good! I haven't been perfect, but I also haven't fallen into the all-too-familiar trap of beating myself up when I don't make the best decision. I have been attending a local weight-loss-surgery support group that meets monthly (mostly gastric bypass patients, but a lot of the same issues) but I'm thrilled to find this forum, where I can get answers, support, and camaraderie 24/7. I want to change my life. I am so committed that I let someone cut into my body to help me change. So hello, and thanks for letting me join the party.

    Which is better

Thanks@@Forsythia for correcting me. I spent more time researching the Lapband & VGS once I learned malabsorption would be an issue and they would reconfigure ny intestines I forgot about the bypass as a option for me.

    Which is better

LOL.... you are going to open that can of worms?!? It really comes down to YOUR choice... the surgeon will explain the varieties and why they may be good for you, and then you (or your insurance) decides. Some insurance companies still don't cover the sleeve. Personally, the sleeve felt like the best for me... I liked the idea of keeping my insides in tact so the nutrients stayed in my system, etc. I know several people that had the bypass 10+ years ago and said if they could do it over, they would have chosen the sleeve. Your co-morbidities, gerd, and other factors will play in to your decision. Good luck (glad you are not considering the band...just MY opinion)
  25. Rogofulm

    Which is better

After reading up on the three most common procedures, I decided on the sleeve. I think the lap band has the highest failure rate; not because of the procedure itself, but because it's the easiest to misuse and cheat. I've seen/heard/read of many people converting from band to sleeve. The bypass seemed too extreme for the 110 lbs I wanted to lose and I worried about the malabsorptive aspects of the procedure. It seems that more daily supplements might be required to replace nutirients that aren't absorbed. Also, I got the impression that the skin used to create the new pouch is very elastic. I worried about it stretching and allowing me to cheat it as well. So the sleeve seemed to hit the Goldilocks spot right in the middle. It's permanent. It allows for more nutrient absorption than the bypass. The remaining portion of the stomach is less stretchy. And this is a biggie.... The area of the stomach that produces the hunger hormone ghrellin is in the section that is removed during surgery. The Wikipedia article on ghrellin states that the sleeve procedure reduces ghrellin levels 60% long-term. So that sealed it for me. You will have to decide which procedure is right for you based on your research and conversations with your doctor. As others have stated, the answer will involve the amount of weight you need to lose, your co-morbidities, and your ability to stick with different levels of follow-up care. Good luck with your decision!
