  1. I was diagnosed bipolar a little over 2 years ago. I am looking into revision but now with my diagnosis - I am wondering if it is possible?? My insurance does not cover it ( ugh) so I will be self paying. i know this is a necessary option /tool for me but worries how surgery may affect 1) if I am able to have surgery 2) how will surgery impact bipolar / depression I do take meds to help manage , can I still take them after? Any input would be wonderful! I go in for my consultation this week. Nervous!!

    Ketosis - getting desperate...

Patience grasshoppah! I agree with Tea. Go back to do one thing at a time. Go back to your old way of eating LC or Keto or whatever you choose to call it. You are likely hungry with it cuz you're keeping fats pretty low. Maybe up your fats and see if it helps with satiety? But when I say "up" them, I'm not talking fat bombs or desserts, or lots of added dietary fat. I'm talking about: 1. Switch from boneless skinless breasts to breasts with the skin. Or switch to thighs. Or eat beef pot roast. Or eat pork shoulder. These cuts naturally have more fat in the meat and so have more calories and are more satiating. Also if you are only eating 2oz per meal (by weight) of protein, try eating 3oz. if you are eating 3oz per meal, try eating 4oz. until you hit your daily protein goal. If you hit your goal easily and go over on protein...then you may need to look at re-apportioning your protein/veggie serving size to fit your macros. I'd add a small salad with vinaigrette to each meal if that happened. I rarely eat more than 3oz per meal cuz I don't need the extra protein. 2. Eat 1-2oz by weight of al dente veggies. Add 1tsp of fat to them (avo oil, evoo, coconut oil, butter, ghee, animal fat) or add up to 1oz avocado, or 1/2oz by weight of nuts/seeds. 3. Eat 3 meals per day. Try not to snack. If you are hungry allow a snack composed of these (choose one): a. String Cheese b. Hard Boiled Egg c. 1oz dense dry protein. This will put you in ketosis big time by the end of about 4 days. You will lose 2-4lbs of water from it as your liver dumps glycogen and the attached molecules of water it holds. Then do that for a month and don't worry about it. That's your new diet. As your pouch matures, you will need to revise it to add more fat/calories to your day, or continue to choose more fat dense meats/dishes. If you are struggling with weight loss, I would stick to this and I would avoid calorie dense complex meals such as casseroles, stews, gooey, cheesy stuff. I'd stick to clean meats, healthy fats, al dente veggies. Hope that helps! Congrats on your losses!!!!! Don't stress, don't worry! For me eating in maintenance is longer than 2months with no loss on the scale or by the tape measure. For me a stall is 3 weeks without a change on the scale or by the tape measure. Other people have different definitions.
  3. Rev Me Up!

    Dr. Kelly vs. Dr. Aceves

I chose Dr Aceves because I was a band to sleeve revision and he was the highest recommended by far on either side of the border. It is hard to compare since none of us went to both doctors. I know that Dr Aceves works out of a real hospital - complete with an emergency room, trauma center, other types of patients, etc. You stay all nights in the hospital rather than a house with nurses (not sure what Dr Kelly's post op set up is?). You are not discharged from the hospital until you pass all the leak tests and perform some necessary biological functions. He has had a lot of experience with the revision - that is what sold me. If I was not a revision, I may have considered someone else. You will find that each patient is passionate about their own doctor, no matter who he/she is. We all feel like we made the right choice for us and people get a little territorial about it. All I can say for my experience is that it was better than any US surgery experience I have ever had. I felt well cared for and I have had no complications as a result of the surgery. Good luck with your decision and surgery!
  4. So, I have a revision scheduled with Dr. Kelly for January but am also considering Dr. Aceves. My story is a little different being that I have an older non-adjustable band called the Molina band (I have other posts on here about that) but here is where I need your input... I have read all your posts on the two docs (and they both sound equally awesome and competent) but am confused on the pricing difference between the two?? Dr. K is almost $5k cheaper than Dr. Aceves for a revision surgery. Does anyone happen to know why? Thoughts? My husband is questioning this mostly and asked me to post and see what everyone has to say about this. Thanks!!!!
  5. What was your approval process like with Aetna? I'm just starting my journey to get rid of this awful band giving me reflux and only lost 25lbs since 2008. Were u made to do a 3 month diet again? I would love to hear your approval stories and how long it took you!

    Syntrax Nectar Experts?

I have tried all the flavors, but the only one that I really like and still drink daily is the Chocolate Truffle. My teenagers even liked it! I used to mix it with skim milk but recently have been using unsweetened almond milk. I have been using this since 2006 when I first had lap band and now with my revision since November. I usually buy it from the Vitamin Shoppe near me, and recently discovered they do free shipping if the order is high enough, so all my supplements (vitamin D3, biotin, B-12, etc.) I now order online from the Vitamin Shoppe. I get points so I will get a rebate coupon at the end of the year that should be substantial.

    The wait begins

Will do!. I agree waiting is the worst but it lets me go back to work and get my things in order before the revision
  8. I had my band installed in March of 2010. I had great success, and in the first year lost 100 pounds, and felt great. Over time of trying to get the fill in the band adjusted to be right, I gradually gained about 30 pounds. In August 2013, I had a slip, which caused my stoma to be completely closed, and even after removal of all the fluid, the stoma stayed closed. I ended up having my band unbuckled and my gall bladder removed. To say that I am disappointed with the Lap Band process is an understatement. In researching my options, I have found many long term complications with the Lap Band. I am now working my surgeon and insurance company to get revision to the VSG.
  9. If you have GERD, RNY gastric bypass is the preferred revision. It usually cures GERD.
  10. I had my original sleeve done in 2016, went from 290 pre-surgery to 195, felt fantastic, no problems at all, they even invited me to have my picture taken for the doctor's advertising! Then I had some personal and professional problems and managed to gain EVERYTHING back. I met with my doctor and he recommended revision, which I am scheduled for some time in November, currently getting my clearances. He said after my endoscopy we'd discuss whether to re-sleeve or convert to bypass. He said if my sleeve was still intact it would have to be a bypass, but if it was dilated I could choose. I had my endoscopy last week and the sleeve is indeed dilated so now I have to make a decision. Another factor is I've had GERD for over 10 years and take esomeprazole daily which helps a lot but I've heard it's not great to take that forever either. I've also heard that bypass usually cures GERD, so that's another consideration. I'd love to hear thoughts from anyone who has either been re-sleeved or converted to bypass so I can have a better understanding of both options before I meet with my doctor again, Thanks!

    After yesterday's seminar

Whichever surgery you go with there is always going to be risks and some complications. Make sure you do ALOT of research and pick a good surgeon that has experience with either the lap band or the sleeve. I was thinking about the sleeve too but I would rather having something thats reverseable and doesn't require cutting my stomach in half. When you are talking about slippage its mostly caused by the patient not eating/drinking what they should and stretching the pouch that is made with the lap band. Some cases its the surgeon's placement of the band that could cause a slippage (in most cases this doesn't happen). A good friend of mine just had her revision surgery for a slipped band because she wasn't sticking to her doctors guidelines and not living the "banded" life as everyone calls it. I'm not trying to scare ya here but I'm getting banded on May 21st and it took me a year to figure out what surgery I was going to go with. Like I said make sure you research both surgerys as much as you can and pick a really good surgeon for either of the surgerys! -Amine

    The heartburn is real :(

I am sorry that it's gotten worse! Yes you may need yo up your meds. Or switch to new meds like Protonix or Dexliant. Ultimately you need to advise your surgeon and they can do further tests. I understand if nothing works. The Final solution Is a revision to gastric bypass. All the best
  13. Clearly, Im an infrequent visitor to the site! but, thank you for the information. Id love to hear how you are getting on since the revision of the revision! I am still waiting on my surgery date, but have finally decided on the bypass option. Your comments really helped. (also my surgeon, after telling me it was my choice, told me it would have to be bypass anyway, because of the scarring from the band!) I have my final appt on the 22nd October, and have been pencilled in for a mid November surgery date. Its been over a year since they removed the band, and +20kg later, Im really looking forward to moving on. Unlike my first two surgeries, recovery from the bypass was very hard for me. I ended up with pneumonia in both lungs and the antibiotics made me super sick. I was miserable but thankfully after the first month all was well. I'm now almost 6 months out and doing great ! I've lost almost all the weight I wanted too, I was low BMI to begin with (189 day of surgery) and I'm now around 155-158 depending on the day. I would like to be about 10lbs less but I'm pretty happy where I am too. I had the Mini bypass so my bypass is actually almost 9', the only complaint or problem I have is that nothing stays with me long and I'm in the bathroom A LOT! Sometimes 10x a day I would say and it's very unpleasant lets just say without too much detail. I do stress about this at work and anytime I'm away from home unfortunately. Thankfully for the most part it has worked out that I tend to go mostly evenings and overnight and early morning but there have definitely been a few emergencies in the middle of the day as well. Other than that which is honestly more than I even expected, things are great! I eat whatever I want, yes I dump on anything too sweet or too fatty so I do avoid some things again especially if I'm away from home. Also, I think it's important to say I really have very little actual restriction, I can eat what I would consider a "normal" portion size of most things though occasionally I still get stuck just like I did with my band which is weird and doesn't happen often. Any specific questions i would be happy to try to answer.

  15. I had the band and loved it...well.. I loved that I lost weight ! lol I converted to sleeve because everyone said how great/wonderful/amazing it was BUT that was not the case for me! My "sleeve" was made large due to scar tissue and removing the band opened the flood gates so to speak. I could eat anything and everything and larger portions so I gained 40 lbs. Also, my body was already used to a restriction only procedure so it was less likely to work for me the second time not that I knew that then. Thursday I revised AGAIN to a mini bypass. I'm doing pretty good, but it's been emotionally very hard for me this time unlike the last two. I've had a little bit of freaking out wtf did I just do to my body kind of thoughts I'm trying to deal with. I have a crazy fear of dumping and getting sick !! Recovery is good though and I'm even back to work today but I do have almost constant headaches I can't kick yet..surgery wise though I feel fine. Best of luck to you!
  16. Im in a similar situation. I have not had surgery yet, as i will have my 2nd consult soon. I have gerd, have had it for years and when the surgeon and I discussed it he said, " well if you get reflux you always can convert to bypass". I was,a bit frustated with that comment and, I said, "No, at 58 years old im only doing this once". He said 1/3 of sleeve patients will still have gerd, and he has been seeing sleeve patients 3 to 4 years out with severe gerd and going the revision route because its very bad and happens daily. Thats why I decided the bypass route. Sent from my SM-N920P using the BariatricPal App 4 years sleeve post op. Had slight heartburn before my sleeve but nothing like this....I had an upper g.i. on Tuesday to find out the Fluid comes right back up and my sleeve has a slight twist in it I had a miscarriage last year and my gerd is now out of control. Submitting for bypass revision Nov 19th. I hope u feel better. I've taken allllll the medicines possible. I even went with natural remedies. Baking soda and apple cider vinegar to help. But it's useless. Im looking forward to relief and losing the last bit I have to hit goal. I still do not regret my sleeve !!!!! Sent from my Z981 using the BariatricPal App
  17. Severe heartburn is a recognized side effect of VSG. I was forced to revise to bypass to cure my heartburn. I would call your surgeon and see if they can put you on a different PPI. You may need to try different medication combinations to find one that gives you some relief. Also, try to drink something other than plain Water. Plain water gave me horrible heartburn. You need to drink because dehydration won't help you at all. In fact, it will make you feel worse. Good luck!

  19. I don't think that I could consider a surgery that many doctors are not willing to do anymore.. Hi, Jo Ann. I just wanted to clear that up real quick. It's not that the Dr's are not willing to do the DS, they are just not trained to do it. It is a more complicated surgery, and required more learning, which most surgeons are quite happy with the status Quo if they are making money with the RNY. For some people (myself included) the DS has many, many advantages over the RNY. I'm not trying to sell you my surgery, I just wanted to say before you decide please do some research on the pros and cons of both, RNY and the DS. The DS still has the highest rate of EWL and the lowest rate of regain. I don't regret revising from the band to the DS, not for a minute. Good luck, and I'm very sorry about your band. I know how it feels, I've been there. Rachele

Outcome of what happened with surgeon today.

Thanks so much Sue for your response. You bring up a good point and I have thought a little bit about that. I don't think that I can go at it alone. If I could of gone at it alone in the first place I wouldn't be fat to begin with right?? LOL!! It's like a never ending vicious cycle!! I wouldn't have to go through 3 surgeries. He said he would take the band out and do the revision at the same time. I don't know too much about the DS, but it's something to look into. But I am taking your advice to heart. I'm at a crossroads and I have a lot of thinking and decision making to do. With the help of God and my friends and family and with help from people on here like you I hope I can make the right decision. Jo Ann
  21. Very good questions indeed. I don't know if I qualify to even respond to this, since I know many European Bandsters who have had theirs for some time (longer than me, I've had mine 5 yrs this upcoming month). There are also some Mexican Bandsters who are around with longer term band experiences, if not on this forum, then certainly on others. What's a "long" period of time? I don't know. Mine has stayed in (even though almost 5 ys ago, I had life-threatening illness after being banded) partially because no one knew much about the complications back in 2001. Rejection is always a possibility but so far apparently the Band and I have found some truce. I did have my port & tubing replaced 13 months ago but it was done surgically as usual (*shrug*) and I don't think there were signs of me rejecting the band, per se. However, my biggest concern is that after 5 years and 2 LapBand surgeries later, I've only gotten my BMI down to 30 or so. So technically I'm still listed as 'obese' according to BMI charts. That's hardly acceptable to me, and far more important, I still have more weight to use. So to answer your second question sometimes I wonder why " I " particularly went through this. Had I known a year ago that I still wasn't going to lose weight - then band rejection or not - instead of having my band port/tubing replaced - I would have been revised then (*sigh*) to another form of surgery. I wouldn't have gone through all I have done just to get down to this size. I'm VERY frustrated about that. Here's the irony - now that my BMI is down to 30 - I no longer qualify for a revision. So it's a tough position. So now I am undergoing series of tests to make sure the band is still OK. If the band has a defect or needs to be removed - then I would DEFINITELY need a revision to another surgery at the same time. Period. Or else I have to fight it out with the band. I can't lose any more weight with my band being under-restricted but at least it's there. - if I am unbanded and without a restriction, then I fear I will return to my former weight without a doubt. And so help me, I live in fear that I'd get even bigger. I'd be inconsolable. So it makes this a bit tough, but I'm not down yet. Happy Band (and UnBanded) Journeys to all, New Sho

I am schedule for my revision surgery on Fed 13,19 from lap band to gastric bypass. Getting nerves Sent from my SM-G935T using BariatricPal mobile app
  23. Alright, I am having my lap band to gastric sleeve revision on November 20th. I would love if those that have already had the revision or the gastric sleeve to help me out. What do I need to do/purchase in order to be fully prepared? What Vitamins do I need? What Protein shakes/powders, etc? What items should I take to the hospital? What other advice would you give me? What did you wish someone had told you before you had surgery? Any and all help, opinions, and advice are welcomed.
  24. I am the analytical type... so I tend to want to know the "why" - but when it comes to managing obesity I am over it. At this point, it is just "how" I was committed when I revised from band to sleeve... and I remain committed to the "fight". I love life as a normal sized person too much to consider any other path.

    Low BMI but want revision

I am having a revision on Monday after being banded on 12/21/11. My band has a slow leak, and I have reflux, heart burn, and throwing up if this band is tightened at all. My BMI is only about 29 but my insurance approved it right away. I am having my revision on Monday and can't wait to get that band out of me. Best of luck with your decision.
