    Hungry! (Pre-Op Diet)

Thank you everyone! I put everyone into MFP today and realized I had 120g of carbs! I can't believe it. I ate Protein & veg all day w/ 1 cup of berries. The veg, yogurt and milk had way more carbs than I realized. I stuck with <800 calories, but need to adjust the veggies tomorrow. Do you have any tips on low carb veggies? I had broccoli, brussel sprouts, and snow peas today. I guess I just need to have less. So hard!

    Breakfast Troubles

Carbmaster Yogurt and a couple slices of turkey bacon. Or my typically breakfast is a protein shake, then maybe a yogurt a little later in the morning. A scrambled egg is a good option too!

    Breakfast Troubles

Pre-op breakfast.... how about a protein shake with a yogurt, or an egg with cheese possibly with bacon or sausage, your goal is to eat plenty of protein throughout the day and get your daily intake of three servings of dairy products. I am post op but now is a good time to learn these healthy helpful guidelines which will help you in your journey after the surgery... Good luck

How Do You Take Your Pills

I was told, anything smaller than a pencil eraser should be fine. BUT, I take no chances. The only pill I take whole is about the size of a birth control pill. The multi Vitamin I take is chewable. Any time I need something for pain, if it comes in pill form I break it up because I just can't stand it pulverized into powder and I HATE the liquid forms. I have some liquid tylenol with codeine and plain tylenol, but unless I'm desperate I don't take it. YUCK! :yuck: As for liquid advil (ibuprofen), I'd talk to my doctor about that. Any NSAID (non-steroidal anti inflammatory) like ibuprofen or naproxyn (aleve) is not highly recommended for bandsters. Because they affect the lining of the stomach and the stomach acids, putting patients at risk for stomach ulcers that effect is amplified in bandsters due to our pouch/band anatomy. I was told it didn't necessarily have anything to do with the medication sitting in the pouch, but it was the chemistry of the drug and how it affected the stomach lining. My doc made me stop taking mine before surgery and I haven't taken any since. When I took vicoden after a minor surgery, I just broke it into three smaller pieces and swallowed it. Sometimes, I put it in pudding or yogurt to help it go down better. Most medications either come in liquid form or can be crushed. The only ones that cannot be crushed are the ones that are enteric coated or sustained release. These should be clearly marked "do not crush" on the labels. When in doubt, ask the pharmacist at your local pharmacy. Capsules work the same, they can be opened and the powder taken unless the insides are sustained release. Some bandsters take capsules whole after the gel-like shell has been softened in Water.

    Severe shoulder pain

My left shoulder still hurts today.I'm starting to think it could be a nerve or something.I still have gas after two and a half days of eating mainly yogurt and isopure protein drinks.Nothing sounds good to eat,and I sure don't want to make this any worse.Anybody know what gall bladder pain feels like?the pain is on my left side, Thanks for any input,I almost feel like I'm whining, but really I just want to figure this out.

    Surgery was yesterday!

Thank you for the kind words, Kat. I was able to return to work on the 8th day because my wife was willing to drive me the 45 miles to and from work. We just made the same trip again today (9/30) for my first post-op doctor's appointment. All is progressing fantastically at this point. Pain free. Lost 9.2 lbs. since I checked in for surgery on the 19th. Cleared to move to phase 2 of the post-op diet and drive today. Now comes the fun of trying to determine when to drink the liquids around the "meals" (30 min buffers on both sides). Still wrestling with determining if a Premier Protein is a meal or a liquid. LOL. Cleared for Elli Quark and Oikos Triple Zero Yogurt (both of which provide added protein - 80 cal and 14 gr protein for Quark or 120 cal and 15 gr protein for Oikos Triple Zero Yogurt). Also received some Bariatric Pal creamed soups and hot chocolate to try (each has 15 gr of added protein). Wishing you every continued success, Kat, and I'm here to support you along the way.
  9. I was banded 9 months ago and have lost 55lbs!! I have went from a size 20 to a size 14!!:glare: However, for the last 3 weeks or so, I have not lost a single pound. I go for a fill in 3 weeks.....which seems SO far away:thumbdown: I only need to lose 6 more pounds and I will be in ONEderland for the first time in FOREVER!! I also leave for a family trip to Disney World in 4 weeks.....my goal was to be under 200lbs by then....im so close....just STUCK!! I have a membership to your local YMCA. I go 5 days a week. I do the treadmill every morning for 45 - 55 minutes.... i jog the first 1/2 mile or so, then fast walk another 2 miles for a total of 2 - 3 miles. Then at night I go back to the Y for either Water Aerobics or Spinning Class. My band is at great restriction. Not sure if its at the perfect restriction yet?!?! I watch what I eat....and am very careful not to end up PB'ing. My diet ususally consists of a liquid Breakfast (band is SO tight in the mornig), a lean cuisine for lunch, then a small meal for dinner...usually whatever my family is eating. I seldom snack...if i do, its usually just a yogurt with granola, or a Jello or pudding cup. I dont know what I am doing wrong. Is anyone else having this same thing happen to them? I would appreciate ANY suggestions you have! Should I exercise more?? Should I add calories?? Eat less calories?? BTW...i usually eat between 800-900 calories a day. Maybe thats just not enough and I should eat more!!! Thanks for letting my vent!! Keep your fingers crossed that my scale starts moving!!
  10. A friend of mine used the fruit to flavor yogurt
  11. I'm not a vegetarian (currently) but spent a number of years as one. Then I got to my remote location here and couldn't find meat so I went back to a vegetarian diet for a while. As it is, I might eat meat once or twice a week. I'm no vegetarian, but I certainly eat a lot of vegetarian meals! I was never able to shake dairy until I got hit by lactose intolerance post op. Doesn't that just figure? I still love cheese but usually only have what I can make myself (simple farmer's cheeses, mozzarella, ricotta, etc.) so my intake is drastically reduced. I try to avoid Pasta, but I make syrniki as a dairy meal - basically it's a cheese pancake made from sweetened farmer's cheese and raisins. I also eat Beans with melted mozzarella on them, and I mix cheese into salads for that tiny Protein (and flavor) boost. I eat a lot of soy products but living in Central Asia means my access to those convenience foods is very limited. For the most part, if I can't make it myself I can't eat it. I make my own soy milk and drink some every day. I make the soy milk into yogurt, too, which I can then use for eating but also for sauces like tzatziki. I make lentil Soup and even lentil salads. I find myself eating tofu pretty frequently (prepared any number of ways), but I also make seitan and occasionally use TVP to make things like chili, sloppy joes or burgers. I use beans in almost everything and I make a big batch of hummus for Snacks and sandwiches. I even make uncheeses - there are a few of them I find tasty enough to eat even now that I eat cheese and meat when I want. I make curries, I make dal, I even try to make simple Soups and boost the protein in them by adding unflavored protein power (Integrated supplements brand works best, IMO). If you ask me, one of the best foods you can eat post VSG is seitan, assuming you like the taste. I make a big batch of "meatballs" from seitan and eating two of them will fill me up and give me 18 grams of protein. I was able to order a bunch of Fantastic Foods vegetarian meals for when I want to eat something in a hurry and they're tasty, even if they're not as healthy as something I could make myself. In any case, you probably have dozens more options than I do! I'm sure that if you get bored you can find some new recipes or ideas online. Hopefully someone else will chime in here with other ideas, too. When I think of it I get envious of the huge variety of prepared vegetarian meals available stateside. Everything I do here is certainly healthier because it's made from scratch but it's also very time consuming. ~Cheri

    strugling 2yrs after surgery

I am doing a protien shake in the AM switching off with greek yogurt and fruit . Lunch I make on Sunday so I can bring it to work and not get stuck looking for something, which is turkey chili, or turkey taco minus the shell. Deli meat with cheese. Then dinner will be fish or chicken. What are you eating?

    This Stinks To No End!!

Sorry to hear that! I think there are a few organic brands of lactose free milk, maybe check some of those out. I think in general lactose intolerant people can still eat cheese and yogurt, but there are exceptions! I think that would be a good one for your dr, to avoid another vomiting episode. Good luck!
  14. You are on liquid post op because your doctor probably has sewn your stomach above and below the band to prevent it from moving; and you don't want your stomach churning (if you were to eat solids). Please follow your doctors orders. I know it's sucks but it is for your own good. My doctor said 7 days clear liquids (stock)and then on day 8 full liquids (tomato soup) for another 7 days. On day 15 I could have yogurt which I mixed with stick blender and added milk to make it thinner. Greek yogurt has more protein which makes you feel full longer. I recommend having your broth/soup and then wait an hour to have the protein shake. This will help with the head hunger. If you have everything at once you will have another 4 hours before you can eat again.

    Vitamins, Calcium, and B12?

Probably because although we havent had bypass surgery you still need alot of nutrients with our intake of food being reduced. I was told by nutritonist and my primary to take multivitamins. I take b12 b/s I have diffiency but I hear band patients can become deficient in it and I take biotin as well. Mainly because they say a side effect of anesthesia and lack of protein can cause some hair loss. I am 7 wks out and I make sure I have 5og or more of protein per day. I still take the biotin anyway. cant hurt I figure. I would say listen to your primary doc cause you will see them more I gather than the surgeon espcially to make sure you dont become vitamin deficient which is easy to do. I was doing chewable vitamins but they were NOT giving me what I needed an adult woman. I dont take calcium because I get it with the vitamins, plus I drink alot of soy milk and eat alot of greek yougurt and other yogurts

6 week Pre op liquid diet

Wow! That is a long pre-op diet! It should get easier and the results will be worth it! Can you eat ANYTHING? Yogurt, sugar free jello, cottage cheese? Make sure you know! Also, I found that Swanson Sipping broths were convenient, high in protein and a welcome change from protein shakes. Good luck!
  20. Hello, everyone, first of all I'd like to say I'm from Brazil, so please, if I make some mistakes, overlook them or you may correct me. I underwent gastric bypass surgery on May 19th this year, it's been only one month. I have no energy, no motivation, my mood is terrible. I start a (semi-)solid diet which includes ground meat, rice, bread, light cheese, but I don't want to eat any of these foods, actually, it's been 10 days since I've been ingesting barely anything. I don't feel like eating, I'm tired of eating what I don't want to eat. I'm craving pizza, burger, especially, chocolate, not lots of it, but I asked my nutritionist if I could eat one Lindt truffle, which weighs only 0.42 ounces, twice a week and she said no. I can only eat a healthy chocolate truffle that she prescribed me, which tastes awful. I don't feel like eating because everything I eat is not pleasant at all. I also need to have so much protein and protein shakes every day, I'm tired of the sweet taste of whey protein, protein yogurt, protein smoothies, fruit smoothies. I told my nutritionist that I can't eat anymore, but she insisted that I must eat, even though I keep skipping meals otherwise I will certainly throw up. I pretty much regret undergoing surgery, I felt pleased when I could eat, now I feel no pleasure. Even my antidepressants what I've been taking for years are not helping, not to mention that my psychiatrist has increased the dose of them. I feel more depressed than before surgery. I don't want to work, study, I just want to stay in bed all day long and skip meals. Does anyone have a testimonial to share? Does it get better? Will I ever be able to eat chocolate, burger, pizza again, just a little bit? Thank you.
  21. I'm 2 weeks post sleeve and am mostly having premier protein shakes and a creamed of chicken protein soup when I'm feeling like something "savory." Every yogurt tastes very artificial and the puréed soup that I've made with protein powder (I like UnJury chicken soup protein powder) & liquified just tastes kind of terrible. Now I prayed that sugar would taste terrible to me post-op b/c I love sweets, but savory vegetable purées taste quite bad too. Has anyone else had this problem?? Does it ever go away??
  22. I saw (albeit in a Nectar ad...) the suggestion to mix: Nectar Lemon Tea w/Crystal Light Peach Tea. Supposedly is delish..........but I haven't tried it. Is there some reason no-one is suggesting smoothies: frozen fruits, plain lo cal yogurt, unsweetened apple juice, whey powder -- run thru the blender for an icy drink. My big problem: makes too much.

HELP: how to make Nectar protein tasty?

I'm with you Zanny, I do enjoy my morning berry flavoried American whey w/frozen berries and 1/4 cup of Fage Yogurt, but would love to switch up from time to time. Have something cool and clean tasting. I've done some research on line and came across the web site for Isopure bottles, I have'nt tried any so can't say if they are good or not. Sounds great the way they descripe them on the site:confused: but then they want to make a sale. The ingredients are listed as Supplement facts - Apple Melon: Serving size 20 ounces Calories 160, fat 0, carbs 0, sugar 0, Protein 40 grams Other Ingredients: Filtered Water, Ion-Exchange Whey Protein Isolate, Sucralose, FD&C Red #40, Malic Acid, FD&C Blue #1, Polysorbate 80, Natural and Artificial Flavors No Preservatives, No Carbs, Lactose Free, Fat Free, Aspartame Free So did a little research on Ion Exchange Whey Protein Isolate and found this site Whey Protein powder - CFM, Ion Exchange Whey Protein Information Very Very Very interesting reading. Think I'll just stick to my powder.:incazzato:

    Holiday Liquid and Shake Recipes

I have mentioned it in other threads, but I will add it here. My Pumpkin Spice Protein shake. I mixed canned pumpkin, vanilla yogurt, vanilla protein powder, a small amount of milk, packet of Splenda, ice and cinnamon. It is so yummy!

    Unjury Protein

I make a smoothie with whey protein powder, frozen berries, banana, yogurt milk and ice. It is wonderful and has 32 grams of protein. I have it for dinner sometimes. There is also special k protein plus and milk for b'fast. I like pure protein shakes but cannot do protein powders except in the smoothie. Sent from my iPhone using RNYTalk
