    Scared! Pain ...

Ice cream, etc is on my avoid list until at least 6 weeks out... I wouldn't do that again for a while!!
  2. Like many overweight folks, I've had plenty of ailments that have kept me down. Besides my weight, I had no issues until I turned 30 (6 years ago)! Then, I went downhill from there: acid reflux, asthma, bad gallbladder, pleurisy, chronic migraines, herniated disk with sciatic pinch that resulted in permanent loss of feeling in my right foot, s-l-o-w healing after WLS, a stroke last month, then most recently unexplained vision loss. But, you know what I say to all those ailments now?? "F you! You hit like a girl. You will NOT keep me down because I am determined to live a happy, healthy life in SPITE of all those things trying to stop me." I know I'm very blessed that (with the exception of the stroke) none of my ailments are life threatening. And, the stroke was very minor... I didn't even know it happened. An MRI to investigate my vision loss showed the stroke. (Incidentally, the stroke and vision loss are unrelated as the MRI showed the stroke actually occurred 2-3 weeks prior to the loss of vision). But, it had been a daily struggle not to let those ailments overpower my willpower. So, I have had enough of them ruling my life! I've started running.... and not just in the movie theater to get the best seat in the house. I'm training for a 5k. I'm very much a novice (can only go one mile alternating wogging and walking.... and it takes 20 minutes). But, I'm moving and that's what counts! And, I will not get discouraged if I'm the slowest one there. I'm doing this for me and no one else there! I've always wanted to be a runner. When I close my eyes and picture myself at goal, I'm running every morning and keeping active with my everyday life. Then, I realized I didn't have to wait for goal to do that! (ah-ha moment!!). :-D ~Jenn
  3. Hi everyone! I am finally scheduled for surgery on July 1st and am trying to get mentally prepared for everything. I finally was able to give up soda after it being a huge addiction for me and I'm so proud of accomplishing it! My biggest worry though are my children. I have twins that are 5 and a little 2 year old. How will this surgery affect my children? What can I expect right after surgery? Should I get help right after or will I be able to do it myself? Any parents out there that can help me out?

    Newbie with 3 kids

The first week is hard, but then it gets easier everyday. The pre-op diet may be challenging as well. You aren't suddenly going to lose so much weight that you look different. It will be over a few weeks and months. You won't want to pick up your children, since that could rip your stitches. Maybe talk to them about that ahead of time. Let them know that you have to go see the doctor and when you come home you will have to rest a lot. Kids can often rise to the occasion. It may be useful to have some help for the first week or 2.

    Omg its time!

I found what helps me is stocking up on sugar free popsicles. It's somthing that I can chew on. I'll be honest, I did cheat some the first 2 days, but by day 3 I was able to stick to it. Luckily I only have one week of it. Just take it one day at a time and you'll do great!

    Omg its time!

  7. surgery date: 11/18/2016 weight: 243.6 current weight: 195.4 losing my hair like crazy and i can't really drink water , it makes me very very hungry [emoji853]
  8. You can do this!! I am almost 18 months out and started to eat candy around Easter. I have gone back to tracking my food, keeping track of my liquids, and Protein, etc. I had female surgery 3 weeks ago, so have can't do a lot of exercise. I have been tracking for several weeks, tracked the candy even, and now am back to a pound below my lowest weight. I started at 225.5, goal weight was hit in December, and am now at 121.8. I weigh every day and really clamp down on my habits when I get near 125.00. You might also talk to your nutritionist as it helped me with how to add some good carbs and not lose muscle mass. We are hear for you. There is a veteran's thread on this site that you might want to check out too. Carol

    banded 6/30/09

I was banded on June 30th also. How are you feeling now? I'm doing good, a bit sore around the port wound but I understand this takes longer to heal. How are you coping with the liquid diet? OMG on day 3 I was absolutely starving and put slice of bread in my soup out of desperation. BAD GIRL! I know now, after I had eaten it ( and felt much better) I researched it and was shocked to the core to find out the possible consequences of what I'd done. I genuinely didn't know this, my doctor told me liquids only for 10 day to let the band heal but didn't go into much detail. Now I know why I am a bit worried I may have done some damage so believe me, I won't be pulling that stunt again!! I was lucky in that I didn't suffer the gas pains or any other side effects that other bandsters talk about and am just raring to go after fighting for over 20 years now to lose weight. I reckon in the past 20+ years I have lost ( and put back on most of it:glare:) around 30 stones!!! Hope you are feeling well and good luck on your journey.

    Surgery Tomorrow

Good luck to all of you ! Tmf said it best "6 months from now you'll love the step you are taking." Oh, how true ! I was banded 6 months ago , and while my surgery and recovery was soooooo easy, the best part is im down 45 lbs !! Down from 225 to 180 ! Im beyond happy ! I just followed my Drs rules 95 % of the time (healthy food, small bites, chew well, and exercise 3x a week minimum ) and the weight has slowly come off. You can do it ! Let us know how it goes, good luck !!!
  12. I'd ask your physical therapist or surgeon. each program seems to be slightly different, but I see a lot of people starting to do more strenuous exercises at the 4-6 week mark.
  13. @@tia92 like you - @Kate_UK @Soodoo also live in the UK I "think" living in the UK, it takes a longer time to have to wait for surgery 2-3 years, "maybe" up to 10 years egads I "think" Canada has a long waiting list too other countries maybe if a person in America is waiting for surgery due to approval from insurance - it could take as long as one year, maybe 2 years i was approved in 6 months others are approved quicker, or later good luck kathy

    Cardio after surgery

I meant to add that he gave me the okay at 2 weeks

    Cardio after surgery

I waited 5 weeks before getting on the elliptical. Lots and lots of different types of walking before then. I was walking the same day I came home from the hospital. Not more then a quarter mile, but at least it was a start. I remember needing to increase my O2 capacity with the little breathing applicator in order to gain strength for walking further. By the end of the month, I was walking 5 miles a day in addition to hills.

    Cardio after surgery

That's great that you were able to do that. I'm building up to it slowly. I want to get out of this starvation stall and kick start my metabolism. Today was my first full day back to work and then I came home and walked my dogs for 20 minutes. It's a start.

    I can't burp!?!

the reason for the diarreah is because what goes in liquid comes out liquid. that is the only reason. As for the burping it took me a good week in order to burp, at first i felt like i always had to and this strong pain and i couldn't. But now...it all flows accordingly. I couldn't even yawn either, but we are good know. You will improve 400% each day, at least i did. I was never in pain, just tightness...ok pain when sitting and getting up from a down position...but it was just like i over exerted my abs that is all. I have a whole bunch of drugs, but never took any......The gas, once it comes out you will feel SSSOOOOO much better!! I wish you a fast recovery, i am still in shock on how much better i got day to day! ( banded 10/17)

    A horrible night...

Thanks for all of your words of concern and encouragement I went for a scheduled fill appointment today (4/9) and told the doctor all about my "horrible night." I was told to take a Phenegren if I am nauseated for more than 15 minutes again in the future. The doctor felt reasonably sure that I hadn't damaged my band b/c I was holding down liquids without any trouble. After discussing all of this, he looked at my weighloss from my last fill appt. (8lbs in 4 wks) and asked ME what kind of a fill I thought I needed. I was thinking maybe .4CCs. He told me that my weightloss was right on target and that he really didn't want to put even .1CC in my band b/c that could cause me to be uncomfortable. If I felt that I needed a fill in 2-3 weeks, I could call to make an appointment. I decided to go w/ his recommendation. In other words... I AM AT MY SWEET SPOT!!!!! MY SWEET SPOT = 5.1CCs/10CC band, 75lbs lost in 10 months + 1 day
  21. Tomorrow will be 3 weeks that my insurance company has been reviewing my file for the surgery and still no word. I am getting more and more nervous that I am going to be declined because it is taking so long. How long did it take you to hear back from insurance company once everything was submitted???
  22. Christmas has been such a hard time to follow the pre-op diet! I just gave it up for a week because I had my step-kids here for a week and they love my cooking. So it was time for me to cook their favorites--homemade mac'n cheese, spaghetti etc. Then taking them to dinner, making breakfast... it was too hard. They leave tomorrow, but my son is coming today. He is 20 and bringing two friends with him because they are hitting the New Years parties and concerts in Nashville. I have to say that since I haven't been following a diet this week it has made me realize how badly I do eat and how crappy I feel and over tired I am. I felt MUCH better on low-carbs! So--despite new company coming for another week, I am jumping back on the horse. I can't stand feeling this run-down and I can absolutely say it is the foods I've been eating. Hello protein!

    Airplanes

I did a big trip about 5-6 months after op - with 12 different flights in just over a month. (At one point there were 3 consecutive flights with quick transfers and 30+ hours in the air). I didnt have any problems with the band - was often a bit tight but ate on some longer flights. Did have one bad episode where I tried to eat, had two small bites, well chewed and then had 5 quick trips to the bathroom and needed anti nausea tablets to stop the slimming. Otherwise was fine. Perhaps just take a protein shake to make for yourself if it is going to be a long flight - just in case.
