I know I know don't weigh. Just curious ...
Sai replied to laura1116's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My first week (I think 10 days) I didn't lose a pound yet taking in only 300-500 cal/day. It's just your body retaining Water or adjusting to the major surgery, try not to let the scale dictate your moods. I know it's hard in the beginning... I weigh every day, although I totally understand those who do not. I started on June 17, 2009 when I first got my band surgery, and look at my log/charts often. Just for myself, I feel if I don't, then I'll lose track like before when I creeped up to almost 300 lbs (probably more because I didn't ever weigh myself ). It's just a friendly reminder that I care about my health. -
Keep WLS a secret from family and friends...
TeeKM replied to Jay05's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am having surgery on June 30. I work in a hospital and we had a co-worker do the bypass about 10 years ago and she gained most of her weight back. I decided to tell my husband and daughter, the people at work and basically anybody I run into. I have decided they probably already judge so let's give them something different to talk about. I decided I really do not care what anybody thinks or says. This is about me and if people think it is the easy way out...that is their opinion. I know there was no other option and my decision has nothing to do with them. I am finally going to take care of me. I am sure the first few weeks will suck but it will be worth it in the end. Nothing anybody says, good or bad matters this is my journey. -
Hello! I need to hear from those that have contuinued to loose weight after their 1 yr. anniv. I have been STUCK for about 2 months. Even after exercising and eating good, the scales WON'T MOVE!!! i have lost 83 lbs to date, but for the past two months, I have been going up & down with the same 10 lbs! What is worse, is that I am going between 195 & 205. I am now pretty much staying under 200, but it is SO Frusterating to keep loosing the same 5 lbs over & over & over!!!! I am beginning to wonder, is this IT?? Please, share your experiences after a year has passed!!! :angry

So I'm just back from my psych eval & I'm so interested in knowing WHY they needed me to draw a clock & show the time 11:10 on it? Also had to draw a 3-D box & connect the numbers 1-2-3, etc, to the letters A-B-C. Really???? How is this going to help my weight loss or prove if I'm ready? I had to fill out a long questionnaire too which seemed to have the same questions over & over, just worded differently. I don't know, there must actually be a logical reason for this but I can't figure it out for the life of me. Also, the psych rattled off a bunch of letters & each time I heard the letter "A," I had to knock on the table. What your psych eval like this?

Hi there! Just wanted to let you know that I am on that bus too! Once you get past the first three days you'll be fine. I have been on my pre-op diet for a week and a half now and am to the point where I am ok with it now. Losing 10 lbs has helped me keep on track too! Just take it one day at a time and try not to watch the food network all night like I was doing, lol Its just torture!!!

Hi All. I was banded on 19th Sept. Since then I have lost about 10 kgs or 20 pounds. It's slow but I'm coming to terms with that! I have had two fills and with both I had restriction for about a week and then it loosened up a bit. I have no idea how many cc's I have or what cc total my band is. I am going for another fill in early January, which I hope will put me in a better position. During restriction phases after my fills I ate a lot less, but after that, where I am right now, I have found I can eat pretty much anything apart from bread. Old habits do creep in, but I am trying and that's all I can do! I also have to get off my bum and do some exercise!!!

Ok, so I said I would put more up about this last night, but with the kids, getting ready for bed....I just didn't have time. The article is called "The Easier Way to Diet" by Martha Beck She talks about a five-step plan to help master your "beastie brain" and "relax the weight off." She makes four key points about our brains and how there are several layers to our brains. Basically, the "wanting to be thin" (cyberbrain) part of the brain is always at war with the "feed me now" brain (beastie). This also relates to the nervous system that goes back and forth between "fight or flight" and "rest and relaxation." Obviously, when the cyberbrain is in control you naturally restrict your intake. Repeated dieting and constant negative thoughts theoretically rev up your fight or flight/beastie brain. She has come up with five steps to combat the issue and calls it SO FAR: S - Stop - feeling anxious, hating yourself, just ate a ton? Stop and shout "Nature break!" O - Open - once you are by yourself work to get back to that "rest and relaxation" part of your brain by Opening up. Relax your body by opening your lungs, your eyes and stretch your muscles. F - Forgive - She says this is the most important step. You must forgive yourself and your body. Make a list of things that you've done right, don't just focus on having eaten those 10 Cookies (yeah, I used to be able to do that! No MORE though!). She says that eventually, you will reach self-forgiveness and the "calm observer" part of the brain will become more active. A - Accept - Once you can forgive yourself, it's time to allow things to happen as they do. (sounds sort of like the AA mantra - "accept the things I cannot control") R - Renew - From that place of "stillness, openness, forgiveness and acceptance, you can Renew your commitment to any eating plan you like." Is it over simplified? Sure. But I like the idea of forgiving myself for being overweight, for choosing poorly that day, past days and past years. I want to accept myself now and enjoy my new body as it begins to change through this process. Good luck to all of us! I look forward to our weigh ins on Friday. We have SO FAR to go in our journey, but at the same time, we really have come SO FAR...Thanks for reading...

Today 4 dresses that didn't fit 3 weeks ago fit me 3 18's and one 16, the 16 I probably shouldn't wear until I lose another 10 but hey it went up over my hips and zipped this time so I'm counting it. That's my brag what's yours?

I am one day out from having surgery on 10/10/07. I just had my pre-op this morning and all went good. When I got weighed today, I am 10# down from 9/11/07, last time I was weighed. So that is a good start before surgery, but I am still nervous, anxious and excited. Will keep in touch..... take care!

I didn't have any trouble with the nurses speaking English. Lucy and Sergio speak great English and the other nurses that took care of me spoke enough to talk to me when I needed. There may have been one time when the nurse went and got someone who spoke better Engish than she did. She understood me, but she felt more compfortable getting someone else who spoke better English to respond to me. I am glad you're home Rosebud, and on the road to recovery. I found the 10 days on clears the hardest of anything, but I did drink the Isopure to get the Protein. I liked the fruit punch flavor. Once you move to fulls, there is much more of a variety of things you can have.

Still Have An Appetite 4 Days Post Op
blondie1007 replied to jlbee's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Maybe so. But per my doc, to avoid stretching the pouch and to avoid leaks, as your new tummy is so sensitive, its best to stay on liquids to let your new tummy adjust to the changes. Its worked for me. I have had no complications and am a size 10 down from a size 24. -

Gosh I love the sounds of being a size 10 down from 24! I so hope I can do it too! Congrats! -
I was told take no longer than 20 mins to eat. That's the amount of time it takes the food to digest and start to reach your small intestines. If you keep eating, it keeps digesting allowing you to fit more food. It usually takes me about 10 mins to eat, slowing down for me has been hard to adjust to. Keep measuring, that is very important so you dont overeat and hurt yourself. Also, I eat about every 2-3 hours. Make sure you're drinking your Water too, that will help with your hunger!

Hiatal hernia and gastric sleeve
KateinMichigan replied to Circus321's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon did do a EGD. He did not find a hernia, and because I never had GERD, he assured me that the odds of me developing acid reflux were “extremely unlikely”. They’ve learned a lot since my surgery- it was so long ago. The real question is - how many of your surgeons patients suffer from it? What is the exact percent - not a guesstimate. How do they keep track? How do they address it when it happens? My surgeon told me “it’s really rare”, and his partner recently wrote a paper (2020) stating 30% of their patients ended up on PPI’s. That’s not “rare” to me. And the practice I went to was highly regarded and considered “the best” in California. I did extensive research. Unfortunately the internet wasn’t what it is today. When patients started begging to get a bypass because the pain/medicine side effects were too great, I think some Doctors started listening and altered techniques. Ask if he automatically puts you on a PPI after surgery. Not a good sign. Many put you on PPI’s, and are completely out of the picture when you start developing PPI problems - dependency months , years down the line. Some doctors attach the sleeve to something else in the body to keep it from slipping up and causing a hernia, some do a “hernia repair” using mesh. Some will tell you upfront - you should have bypass because.... always get a second opinion (and a third), and find a surgeon who doesn’t downplay it. I recently listens to a surgeon giving a presentation at a medical conference. He advised his fellow surgeons to decline sleeves to certain patients because “the reflux would keep them banging at your door”. He jokingly suggested that you send patients with HH or GERD to “your enemy” if they want the sleeve. This was a video from 2019. I am grateful for those door bangers, because while I just suffered silently- they demanded help and brought awareness. They are hero’s. Please share your story and your surgeon, especially if you are PPI free. -
Do you know ANYONE banded before 2001?

My Dr. was banded about 10 years ago & he was one of the trial people. He said his band has no fill now & he is doing really well. -
Hey all, 9.5 days post op and fealing prety good. 19 lbs lost already! Here is my question for all of you; I started to introduce mushy foods today i.e. mashed potatos, pureed scrambled eggs, thinned out oatmeal ect. I am supposed to be on a liquid diet for three weeks but i sure am enjoying the mushies. What diets did your doctors have you guys on? when did you start eating pureed and mushy foods? When did you start eating solid foods? Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi Everyone, I think they should offer post op classes on 'How to deal with plateaus". Now I know no one is feeling sorry for me because my weight loss has been great, but I have been such a good girl making good food choices and I still on a plateau for 10 days in a row every month. I will go up and down 2 pounds from my lowest weight and have to struggle to get back to it and then drop some more. But overall, if I look at averages, I have consistently lost between 8-10 lbs a month in the last 5 months and an overall average of 11 1/2 pounds per month since being banded. So even though I consider myself somewhat intelligent, I still want to scream and jump up and down like a baby when I get on the scale and experience this. FOr a week now, I have bounce around from an alltime low of 241 back up to 242.5 and then have struggled all week to get back to 241. Now I know based on history to date that in the next few days I will see a 3-4 pound drop, but sometimes I get scared that I will be stuck here and never see anything below 200. Now the logical thing would be to throw out the scale, but for me this would not work. The daily accountability I feel to myself is important and I know that if I don't do this, I will be more unfocused and think that maybe a couple of tortilla chips or a piece of bread will be OK today because what I don;t know won't hurt me. So I guess everyone is different in this way. SO does anyone have any advice other than throwing my scale off a tall building? Babs in TX 334/241/180 -93

Neater house, spend less money. We want a new house and we want to make a huge step up in terms of where we live and what we live in so we need to save save save. We're stuck on one income for the next four years while I finish my degree, sigh, I havent worked in 10 years as it is. The diet and exercise are going to take care of themselves, I truly feel I am not the same person any more.

I'm thinking after a fill things could be completely different for me. I take nothing that is time release and have been swallowing them with a lot of Water with no problem. I just wondered if there was a specific reason for crushing them I didn't know about. I will continue taking them as I am, but I will be aware after my first fill I may not be able to do so. I also wonder as I read on here why some doctors put in fill at the time of surgery and others do not. My surgeon puts no fill in at the time of surgery and I have a 10 cc Vanguard band. I guess I have little restriction right now, but know that things could change. Thanks for the answer.
