    I gained a pound

Call the nutritionist, but how can you get that much in if you are only eating 3 times a day? And as far as the pound goes, I would try increasing your calories to 1000 - 1200 per day. I wasn't losing at all at 800.

    I gained a pound

This past monday, i was 5 weeks out....to me I have been losing slowly...i was 19 lbs down since surgery, 63 total including pre-op. Yesterday I weighed myself, and the scale went up .6 then today another .4 for a full pound I just finished my period so I was expecting it to go down more also this morning I had a BM, so when the scale went up i was mortified I have been keeping my caloried under 800 my Water has been at least at 72ozs my Proteins over 70 i am really getting frustrated. my doc said 3 meals a day, but my friend who was sleeved in August says i should be eating 5-6 times a day...as I read most of you say on here...do you think I should call my nutritionist, or just wait it out a few days??? Bear in mind I started solids this past weekend, do you think that is it??? ughhhh

    Angry at my thyroid

Well I am hypothyroid. But I've been on meds for about 2 years now. However I had been at 88 mcg's for a long time. But during that time I lost about 30lbs. So when they did a recheck I was in the HYPERthyroid range...however I felt amazing for once, hypo symptoms were gone and I had no racing heartbeats or other hyper symptoms (in fact I was actually losing weight-instead of only maintaining on 1000 calories a day). However due to the TSH number she lowered my levothyroxine dose to 75 mcg's. I believe I was at .19 for TSH. and .3-3.0 is the range...I'm just wondering how much my levels have risen again because I'm struggling to maintain weight right now. It's irritating.

    Need a Pep Talk

My story is a long one, but if you want to read it on my blog liquid put into my band as of late. My doctor is super booked and its seems I can never get in and I am working constantly (paralegal). So without hardly any restriction, I packed on 25lbs. Now, through vigorous exercise and extreme dieting (minimal calories, veggies, chicken, eggs, repeat) I have lost 10 lbs of that. I have not been feeling myself lately. I hate the way I look and am terrified of gaining weight back. I seem to have gained it all right in my abdominal region, which makes it so many things do not fit correctly at all. My confidence is low, and I am so sick of dieting I could harpoon something. I know the end result will be worth it, and I need to go back in and get a fill, but I am struggling so hard right now. I would do anything to get down past 160 (my lowest) and hit 150 (my original pre-op goal) and I want to be 140 (over the moon, never going to happen goal). I feel hungry all the time. I eat good, healthy veggies, I cut out cheese, I make very good choices because the band taught me that, however, my willpower right now is struggling and I want to see lower numbers on that scale. Any tips or tricks you guys have to maximize your weight loss would be phenomenal right now. I need a pep talk

How Many Fills Do I Need?

I didn't feel anything with the first three fills, but kept trying to stay on track with my eating. Protein, protein, protein! After the 4th fill, everything has been great. I feel restriction just when I need it, and am not having to count every calorie that I eat. Hang in there! Something I didn't realize initially is that they will advance the fill amounts as you lose, so the more I lose at each appointment the more restriction they "can" add. I have another fill scheduled next week, and probably won't have them adjust anything as I think I may be in the green zone? Good luck. Hang in there.

    finally on food

I went to the doc today and was finally given the ok to eat. There were so many foods that I saw ,wanted, or craved when I couldn't have them that now that I've been told to eat, I dont know what to eat first. Also, It's been 4 weeks and 22 lbs gone. for me, it was worth the wait. www.my-calorie-counter.com The webs free Fitness'>http://www.my-calorie-counter.com/"]Fitness Journal >

    What am I doing Wrong?

I am getting my protein, keeping my carbs down. I am losing inches. I am using the program myfitnesspal which tracks everything. It just seems that the weight should be going down. A pound of fat is the same as a pound of muscles with the exception that a pound of muscle takes less space hence the loser clothes and muscle burns more calories than fat otherwise a pound is a pound. I was on a low carb diet in 2010 and I was taking in between 960 - 1050 calories a day and I lost weight just about every week. I am eating about the same except smaller quantities, as I was then and I'm just not losing. Is this normal?
  9. Cleo's Mom

I'm at a weight stand still.

Eat breakfast - even if it's a protein shake. Make sure you're getting protein in your soup or salad at lunch and add some fruit, too. Also keep in mind that for every 10 pounds you lose, you need 150 fewer calories to maintain that weight.
  10. I am 4.5 weeks post op. I lost 9# the 1st 2 weeks and only 1.25 since- nothing for the last 2 weeks! Here's history: 5-600 calories liquids x2 wks. 800 cals. per week 1st week purees 1100 calories per day most days for 2nd week purees. to dr. NUT told me no more then 800 cals. per day. EVER til I've lost all my wt. and this is a standard. I am working out 5-6 days per week 1 hr. per day. . I have built back up to this (1 hr. per day 6-7 days per week pre op) and this week 1 hr. per day all week. Monitoring my food religiously and being totally honest on it... using livestrong site. getting in my water. 3 small meals and 1 small snack per day. no late nite eating (but dinner prob.later than it should be but that's my wk. schedule). She told me to cut out virtually all carbs. I don't want to be back on the protein diet..been there- done that. I asked how many carbs per day.. what % of my calories? how many... would not say...just to cut them out as much as possible. Any ideas why my wt. loss has died? I am getting in 850-900 per day now..can't stay at 800.. UBER hungry all the time Anybody else experience this? I am SO frustrated and I KNOW I'm not cheating and doing it right. I"m keeping my eye on the end game...staying the course.. but it's SO hard and it's making me feel like a failure.!

Am I Loosing Weight Too Fast?

That is fantastic and fast, but as Lissa points out, don't expect it to go that fast every week or for months at a time! The initial loss is usually quick dramatic due to many reasons. You're losing Water, so that is quick. You're eating VERY little post-op as you begin healing and learning what you can and cannot tolerate. You stomach is quite swollen, so you capacity is tiny. It will get bigger and you will eat more. On the flip-side. Those of us who have more to lose (starting with BMI >45 or >50) tend to lose faster. It's probably tied to the fact that our new calorie intake is so dramatically less than what we were eating prior to surgery, just to maintain our larger size! Now we're eating tiny amounts and still having to use up energy to move our big bodies around. This creates a significant calorie deficit, and the only place the body can turn to for that energy gap is our fat! Which is fantastic! That's what we want! Use up that fat darn it! Beware though, as we get smaller, our calorie requirements decrease, and our food intake will remain roughly the same. That means a smaller calorie deficit and slower loss. That's usually why VSG patients have to "crank up" the exercise as they get closer to goal. To introduce more of a calorie deficit (we can't cut back on our intake, after all, it's already very low!). Enjoy your "shotgun" start! And keep up the great work!
  13. I like Dannon Light & Fit Greek 5.3 oz cup. 80 calories, 0 fat, 9g carbs, 8g sugar, 12g Protein. My favorite flavors are cherry, blueberry, peach, and strawberry. I can eat a whole one most times. Sometimes I throw out about 1/4 of it. If you follow your doctor's guidelines than you can eat 1/2 or even a little more and be around 5g of sugar.

    Swelling Is Gone:(

Hi Mel, I am right there with you. My appointment is Wednesday and I will be just over four weeks from surgery. Have not felt a return of hunger until very recently -- have noticed in last week to ten days that I am hungry again sooner, although I'm still satisfied on a small portion. My weight loss has stalled. Could be a small plateau or I am taking in too many calories. I look forward to discussing all this with the doctor. A bit nervous about a fill as I've been doing so well and don't want to rock the boat. Good luck to you Tuesday -- let's compare notes!
  15. I am almost 2 years post-op. I've been doing well with my weight, but the last two months I've put 6 pounds on. I am still below my medical goal weight, but I feel best at 170-175. I'm at one 180 now. I have recently had UNCONTROLLABLE hunger. I'm still mostly eating on plan and have begin counting calories again because I DO NOT want to gain even one more pound. I'm also returning to the gym after over a year of not having to go. I'm eating proper portions, but I've had to increase the number of times I eat in a day to try to stay satiated and not overeat. Has anyone had a radically increased sense of hunger post-op? How have you dealt with it?

    Week Six Weigh In/NSV's

SIX WEEKS ALREADY! HW: 273 SW: 250 LW- 233.6 CW: 232.6 About 40lbs down from my highest weight, about 18lbs down since day of surgery. Hoping I get somewhere near 230 by my 8 week update.... Not gonna talk about how annoyed I am by how slow this is going. Non Scale Victories- As you all know I hit my goal of 20 miles of walking in January. I am going to leave the goal the same for February and add a few days of Turbo Fire, the Fire 30 work out. It’s pretty fun and burns a lot of calories. I have also been getting LOTS of comments on my apparent weight loss, so that feels good. I was thinking about going to pick up a couple of pairs of pants this weekend but……….I think I have talked myself out of it. I don’t know, I just feel like if I went, I would be disappointed and I just can’t really take that right now. My mom suggested I go TO the store and try them on and I said, why so I can have a proper breakdown in public in the changing room? NAWL. So we’ll see. I might and I might not, depending on how small I feel when I get up and get going tomorrow.

    What Have I Done?

My pre-op diet is Bariatric Advantage protein powder shakes for 2 weeks. I can mix the powder with water, milk, or soy milk, and add fruit or greek yogurt if I wish. I can have 4-5 shakes per day, which works out to be about 1000-1200 calories per day. I can also have sugar-free clear liquids as I wish. From what I have read on the forums, the diet varies surgeon to surgeon. Some people do the shakes for 1 week, others, get to eat food but have to follow an Atkins diet.

    Malaysia Air - Meals

Has anyone flown Malaysia Air and have any thoughts / feedback on their in-flight meals? On other airlines recently, I sometimes order a special Gluten Free meal and it kind of worked well. It means I get my meal earlier and it has less sauce / rice etc + more protein. I need this extra time to be able to eat for longer, however it can result in food jealousy when the normal meals look nicer I have never flown Malaysia Air before, so I haven't tried their normal meals, or special meals. I don't need a Gluten Free meal specifically as I'm not GF, but getting a special meal worked out well, e.g. getting it early, having less rice and more protein etc, that would be good to hear. These are the options: https://www.malaysiaairlines.com/nz/en/experience/inflight-meal/special-meal-request.html (e.g. Bland Meal (BLML) Diabetic Meal (DBML) Gluten Intolerant Meal (GFML) Low Calorie Meal (LCML) Low Fat Meal (LFML) Low Lactose Meal (NLML) Low Salt Meal (LSML) + more information and options on line above.) After any thoughts or suggestions on whether to order their normal meal or a special meal.... e.g. Gluten Free. Thanks!

    Calorie intake ???

This is how you live your life. My doctor is aiming for portion control and smart choices, not calorie counting. Frankly, I've "been there, done that". I go NUTS if I have to count every freaking bite I eat! LOL That's the beauty of the band, however; it is your tool You use it to suit your style. My doctor bans all snacking, and that is working for me.
  20. I'm 5 1/2 weeks out and I STILL get tired really easy. You JUST had major surgery. There's been a lot of trauma to the body, your intake of calories is REALLY low and you're healing. Everything on the outside looks and feels normal but the insides are still healing. We can't see the insides so we think we should be up and going all day like normal! Last Friday we went woodcutting in the forest (normal process for us), all I did was ride in the truck, walk up and down the dirt road watching 2yr old DD play in the dirt and DH to make sure he didn't cut something important off with the chainsaw and I was EXHAUSTED! I didn't hump wood to the truck like normal. I didn't load or stack wood in the truck, like normal. I did NOTHING and I was done for! Drove me nuts! We're going out again tomorrow. I still can't hump wood because I'm still on my 10lb lifting restriction (unless we get some smaller pieces of wood!) but I'm hoping that a day in the truck doesn't wipe me out again. I feel better than I did last week, so I'm hoping. It takes time. Give yourselves a break and take it easy if you can. Rest when you can and heal. Best wishes!!
  21. Bill, i have been asking my self the same question should I get a fill. I am almost at goal but I am getting hungry every 3 hours. I am trying to hold out to see if adding maintenance calories will help. I do work out a lot and that could be the reason for the hunger. I am trying to give it another 3 weeks to see what I feel like at goal. If adding calories does not work I will get one. ( I have only had 2 fills in total) Good luck and congrats on your success!

    Advice on maintaining

I am 17 months post-op on RNY. I lost 20 pounds pre-op and 80 pounds post-op. This occurred during the first 7 months. Then I went into a maintenance mode where I stayed within 2 pounds of my lower weight. A couple months ago I contracted a stomach flu and lost another 10 pounds and decided to maintain my weight at this newest level. I am 150 pounds. I weigh myself each morning when I get up with an accurate scale good to 0.2 pounds. I am led to believe that at about the year and a half mark, my stomach will heal. As it heals the stomach will begin to absorb 100% of the calories instead of 70%. This is just what I have heard and since I have not reached a year and a half, I cannot say this from first hand experience. This could present a problem. In the maintenance phase, one can eat within a range (for me this is 1000-1500) calories per day and not gain weight. I generally consume on the high end of this range. I am happy. But if my body becomes more efficient, it might mean that I will have to drop my calorie intake down significantly in order to maintain my weight.
  23. I was pretty weak too for the first 10 days. Keep in mind your calorie intake is very low, and probably much lower than your body is used too. Your body is also recovering from the trauma of surgery and healing.

    Pre-op diet difficulties!!

Angel, some of what you're feeling is indeed detox.....detox from carbs. We're so accustomed to getting in carbs in ways we don't even think of. In fact...check the new Protein drink that you've just gotten......is it around 3 carbs per serving? If not...try to find one that is. I use Muscle Milk Light...available in my area in convenience stores, gas stations, fitness (bodybuilding) stores and some Vitamin Shoppes. It has 20 gm protein and 10gm carbs but 0 gms sugar. It will take some searching to find a Protein Drink you can "depend" on, and as others have mentioned, your tastes may change dramatically after surgery. The best thing you can do is to really read the labels and look for the highest amount of protein you can find with the least amount of carbs. Do your best and you'll be fine. When justifying the costs, just remember they are replacing meals and calories of junk nutrition your body used to think it needed! look at theworldaccordingtoeggface.com website....it will give you lots of ideas for using protein powders to make really imaginative Desserts, ice creams, shakes etc. However, she'll tell you straight up that if your protein powder tastes like Monkey's ass plain, it won't taste much better than monkey's ass after you use it to make ice cream etc.....lol Pre-op I "fixed up" some bad tasting shakes by adding in some sugar free pudding mix, or Torani or DaVinci sugar free syrups. It sometimes helps to drink it from a cup or bottle with a smaller spout so you can get it past your nose. best wishes,

    Stress Stress Stress

You can get it back!! I still have days when all I want to do is snack and go over my calories but you can't undo what's done so you just have to realize your mistake and try to do better the next day! Getting in the green really helped my control but it's not perfect! Good luck!
