    January 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hi everyone, I submitted all the documents 2 weeks ago to my Surgeon’s Office. I’m awaiting: 1. 2 more appointments with my Surgeon Signing the consent form, picking a Surgery date and taking a quiz while at the 2nd appointment 3. Approval letter from the insurance company The Holiday season is up on, it’s obvious that my Surgery won’t be next month like I wanted . It will be in January Can we make a Facebook group so we can chat daily and cheer each other along?
  2. Yes 12/10 🙌I’m super excited and nervous currently on day 3 of the 3 week liquid diet

    Food Before and After Photos

Made some sautéed bay scallops with garlic and capers over spinach. Ended up still hungry so added some leftover stuffed mushrooms from earlier in the week. Ended up eating it all.

    March surgeries

My first two months I spent in and out of the hospital. They were tough! Week 10 onto now is much easier.

Can you show me your food log?

Thank you both. You're both males in the range of where I'm starting so this is so helpful. @vikingbeast Only 10 weeks post op - do you ever do protein shakes anymore?

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

It might just be the gas from surgery. Walking helps. If you feel like your heart rhythm is abnormal, you probably should go to your dr or urgent care so they can listen. The surgery sent my heart into an abnormal rhythm and I ended up having to stay over a week while they figured out what drugs to use to slow it down. Hope you’re okay.
  7. Hi doobie. I had gastric sleeve surgery 8 months ago. With my program you dieted for several months prior to surgery, then two weekes before surgery we had to drink only 800 cal of protein drinks a day. After surgery your sleeve will prevent you from eating for several weeks. Broth and water only to start, then back on shakes. You will gradually start eating solid foods egg whites etc. It took several weeks to finally eat 800 cal again. I really never felt hungry just frustrated that I couldn't eat. I didnt starve and now 8 months later I have lost 154 lb. I am 5' 6.5" and I weighed 324.2 lbs when I started in the program. I am 68 and nobody recognizes me now. This was the best thing that ever happened to me. So, hang in there and trust your nutrition team. They have done this for several hundred people before you. Good luck.
  8. I got the sleeve on Oct 20th and have lost 12 lbs since. I’m pretty down about it. Had my 4 week checkup expecting to hear not to worry, stalls are common. Instead, they were concerned I was eating too much: I was averaging 700-800 calories a day and they said most people at my stage are taking in appx 500. I’m trying very hard to cut back to lower calories and have quit weighing myself but beginning to think it’s not really going to work for me.
  9. I lost 40 pounds I am in 20 days post-operative and now stalling for the last 5 days
  10. Hi @doobie31, I also think it may depend on the type of surgery you end up having. I had the SADI and during the loss phase I was very satisfied and consistently lost each week when I consumed 700 to 800 calories per day. Now that I’m trying to maintain, I’m up around the 1600 to 1800 calories a day and if I’m very active then I need around 2000 to not lose more weight. With my restriction, I am finding it difficult to each that much at the moment but it will get easier over time. Each person is different and will have different needs but as all of the other posts have said, it becomes a new way of living and it’s definitely worth it. Good luck and I look forward to hearing about your journey!!

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

I’m right with you. I cannot wait to start purée on Tuesday. I’m so tired of liquids. I took a 1 mile walk today and had still have shoulder pain. Does the gas cause pain 2 weeks out? I lost 16 in pre-op and 6 since surgery on 11/9. Hope everyone is feeling well.

    Is my weight loss normal?

that averages out to 4 lbs a week - so yes, that's normal. You normally see the biggest drop the first month (maybe two), after that, 2 or 3 lbs a week is pretty average. I'd also lost 39 lbs when I was where you're at, and I started out much heavier than you. I think a lot of people's expectations are shaped by shows like "My 600 lb Life", but you have to keep in mind that people on that show start out A LOT heavier than your average bariatric patient - so you can't compare yourself to them. If you're sticking to your plan, staying active, and your overall weight trend is done, you're good.
  13. I had gastric bypass on 09/09/2021 and I have lost 39 lbs. so far after 10 1/2 weeks. Is this a normal amount of weight loss for that amount of time? People will ask me how much weight I've lost and when I tell them they ask if I've been cheating. I have been following the plan but it bothers me that I'm not losing faster.

    Just got my surgery

As @NovaLuna said, signals get messed up post-op. It could be thirst, especially so soon post-op when you're still trying to get enough hydration. It could also be very slight acid reflux (for me this happens if I eat too carby all at once, or if I eat too fast, or if I drink too soon after eating or vice versa). If you wait a half an hour and it goes away, it wasn't hunger. And some people have hunger after surgery. My surgery "twin" @lizonaplane said she feels hungry; I am just now, 10 weeks out, starting to sometimes feel hunger, but almost in the background. Everybody is different, and every body is different.
  15. @vikingbeast 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣 “no te rajes” that’s going to be my week motivation phrase. Yeah I am about in that 7 days stall. Thank you me hicistes el día mano en la verdad. Felicitaciones en tus libras perdidas.

Congrats! That’s amazing! I am almost 2 weeks post op too and I have been able to stop taking all my blood pressure medications!! Those NSVs make this whole process worth it already!

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

Crazy Scale victory... So, from the time I started my pre-OP diet for 1 week prior to surgery.... that was 2 weeks ago today, until now... 1 week post-OP, I'm down 40#. Non Scale victories... soreness almost gone. Water weight in legs and hands vastly gone. But most importantly, I did all of this due to an arrhythmia and that too is now 95% gone.
  18. Stay the course. I am 8 months post VSG and 9 lbs from goal. Been bouncing up and down between 147-149 for a few weeks now. HW 264 SW 235 CW 149 GW 140

    Hungry

Yes its tough! My liquid preop started and ended on 10/24 till 10/31, unfortunately im the one who cooks, hubby didn't. So yes everyday i cheated with one meal during the preop diet. Had only water, ate a very small meal, like a ham/cheese sandwich. Had chicken breast(eating clean) and lost 10lbs that week and had no problems during surgery. Now its very easy to cook, see everyone eat, doesnt bother me. But im 3 weeks post op and hair loss settled in which is frustrating. Good luck, youre gonna rock this! Hair Loss

I had a one week pre op diet. And i did see my surgeon on the 18th and told the nurse of my weight loss stall. She said, its because im not meeting my protein/water goals, and thats true. Later that night, had a zoom meeting, with another nurse from the surgeons office, and talked about hair loss as a random topic. She also mentioned same thing(protein/water goals), and adding zinc and biotin, using baby shampoo(because of less chemicals) and washing hair one or two times per week. I started biotin and zinc yesterday. And its tough for me to make it to my 80g protein and 64oz. I just didnt expect this so soon. Sent from my SM-G973U using BariatricPal mobile app

Can you show me your food log?

I don't log meals. I log calories I eat in a day. I used to not do that, but the amount of stalls I have is annoying so I was trying to see if I was eating too many calories. I was. I'm not anymore lol. So Friday's log was as follows (not doing Saturday's because I was busy shopping and baking all day and although I only ate 1115 calories... that was because I skipped lunch because I'm an idiot). So yeah, Friday's: Banana (105 calories) Light Greek Yogurt (80 calories) 2 no sugar added fudgesicles (80 calories) Turkey Enchilada (homemade. 250 calories) Light Greek Yogurt (80 calories) Protein Shake (160 calories) Tater Tot Casserole (340 calories) Light Greek Yogurt (80 calories) Almonds (160 calories) Total Calories= 1335 Calories For reference, I'm almost 22 months post-op so I'm a bit farther in my journey. I also don't drink my calories. I drink Powerade Zero's (which have no calories, no sugar, no fat, and only 2 carbs per bottle). I also round up my calories btw which is why they're all even lol. My calories for that day are probably closer to 1315-1325, but I always round up because I'm weird like that. And I've already reached my goal weight, but haven't reached maintenance yet.
  22. I am losing about 4 lbs. a week. at 2.5-ish months out, and am about halfway between surgery weight and goal. BUT: 1. Everyone loses at their own rate. 2. I'm a dude, and as unfair as it is, it seems easier for guys to lose weight even after WLS. 3. I work and workout like a fiend. I would talk to your surgeon about your inability to keep stuff down or to eat more than an ounce at a time. That's concerning.
  23. Totally the three-week stall. It lasted a bit over a week for me and then WHOOOOOOOOSH the weight came flying off. I'm averaging a bit over 4 lbs. a week now (hooray for the honeymoon period!) and 59 lbs. from goal. I know it'll slow down as I get closer to equilibrium, but for right now I love it. No te rajes!!

Can you show me your food log?

Meal 1 (0530) (51 cal 6C 2F 2.3P) Espresso with 5 g brown sugar and 2 oz steamed milk Meal 2 (0745) (164 cal 4C 10.6F 13.3P) 1 slice chard and spinach crustless quiche Meal 3 (1000) (164 cal 4C 10.6F 13.3P) 1 slice chard and spinach crustless quiche (liked it so much I ate it twice) Meal 4 (1400) (309 cal 11C 14.7F 32.8P) 2 beef kofte (meatballs) and 1/2 cup puréed pinto beans Meal 5 (1800) (327.2 cal 52.2C 3.3F 20.3P) 1 serving chicken tinga 1/2 cup puréed pinto beans 60 g steamed green beans Persian melon Meal 6 (2030) (130 cal 24C 3F 2P) 1 serving Maria biscuits TOTAL 1310 cal 105.1C 54.8F 97.4P - exactly within my macros per my nutritionist. I am just short of 10 weeks post-op. (Note, before someone jumps in about how that's SO MANY CALORIES—I burn at least 1000 calories a day just in exercise and physical work which I need to do, so it has to get fueled. When I was eating much less, I had no energy and no strength to do things like move hay bales. And I am still in the honeymoon of losing 4-5 lbs. a week.)
  25. At two months I’d lost about 12kg (26lbs) from my surgery weight & by the end of the 3rd month I’d lost about another 5kg (11lbs) so it was slowing by then. But as @The Greater Fool said, we all lose at our own rate. There are many factors that influence your rate of loss: age, gender, starting weight, metabolic rate, genetics, etc. I’d encourage you to have a conversation with your dietician & surgeon about your progress especially if you’re concerned & as you’re still predominately getting your nutrition from protein shakes. What does your plan recommend you should be eating at this point? Personally I gave shakes up from week 3 purée stage - was always my intention. At two & three months I was eating 1/4 - 1/3 cup of food 3 times a day plus a high protein yoghurt or yoghurt drink. Also had started adding vegetables & a little fresh fruit. But we are different in what & how much we can eat eat as we progress. I hear you about the dizziness & lack of energy. Dizziness caused by drops in blood pressure is not uncommon to begin (unless you’re like me & always had a tendency to low blood pressure & then you live with it forever). Try adding an electrolyte drink to your fluids each day to give you a good boost. I carried a bottle of diluted hydralyte with me everywhere for months.
