    November Surgery Buddies!!!

Thanks, Grands. I only have about 3 more capsules from the doc so I wasn't sure what I should get to help until I see him next week.

    November 2021 surgeries

Yes everything went completely fine no pain no nausea tolerated all liquids on phase 3 of diet and have hit a stall worried I’m doing to many calories but nevertheless in good spirits ! Feel better soon
  3. I’m just a little bored on this soft food/purée phase. I’m making ricotta bake tonight. I did a puréed chicken salad with Greek yogurt and some other seasonings to eat on this week for lunch. Lots of other recipes I’ve tried but guess I’m just bored now. All suggestions welcome !
  4. My nutritionist b----ed me out for overeating, too. I was eating a whopping 800 calories and stalling hard. She told me that I needed to be eating 400-500 calories a day and that's why I wasn't losing weight. I told her that the week I tracked my food before starting on this journey, I was maintaining my old weight on 3800 calories a day and there's no freaking way I was bumping out of a caloric deficit with an intake of 800 calories. So she said I was non-compliant and then huffed, "I guess if you want to gain it all back, it's up to you." I fired her. Loudly. I posted about it elsewhere on this site. And I went and found a nutrition group that focuses on flexible nutrition and who have nutritionists and RDs who are familiar with bariatric patients. My nutritionist put me on 1200 cal a day to start and has been encouraging me to eat more—this week has been more like 1400. I am very active, though, and burn calories both working and working out (I'm not a "walker"... I run, I do CrossFit, I do ranch work.) I'm twelve weeks out and still losing 3-4 pounds a week. I do track everything I eat and self-discipline is hard but necessary. I figure this surgery gave me 6-12 months to re-evaluate my relationship with food, and that's plenty of time to develop new habits that are just second nature.

SO much pain 2 days out

Yes, I spent my entire first week wondering why I had decided to torture myself like this. If it's unbearable, call the doctor and ask they prescribe you something. I was sent home with liquid tylenol with codeine, but it was so nasty that I preferred not to take it. Walk as much as you can, it'll help with the gas pain.

    This surgery is bullshit...

Sounds super disheartening! I have only lost 30lbs so far too, but that isn't cause to give up. I had my A1C done last week, and in just 30lbs of loss I'm no longer diabetic, not even pre-diabetic. Any loss is good loss. If you are feeling angry and frustrated, acknowledge it, then ask what you need to do to get things moving in a positive direction again. More water? Different macros? Physical activity? Everyone's journey is different, so don't compare yours to anyone else's and think you've failed. You've only failed once you quit trying. I hope it gets better, goodmanje!
  7. I was a model child the first two weeks after surgery. I had no appetite and anything I put in my mouth was strictly out of medical necessity but I was dogged and made sure to meet my protein and water requirements every day. Lost 12 lbs. The second two weeks, I’m not sure if I was “hungry” but I found I could enjoy food again and things became more tempting. With the Doctor’s approval, and I asked many specifics of her, such as flax, vinegar, and protein bars with nuts, she reassured me “I couldn’t hurt my stomach”, I moved forward and, while eating 75% on target, I also incorporated small amounts of things from my old life – a bite of bread roll, a 1” square of brownie, half a flour tortilla, a piece of corn dog. All while keeping my calories between 700-900 a day. Nothing seemed to bother my stomach and my capacity, while certainly limited, was more than I expected. At my four week appt, the nutritionist was a bit horrified and pretty much wrote me up as non-compliant. Said that most people were eating about 500 calories a day at that point. After sulking (and stalling) for another week, I started adding a protein shake back for breakfast, upped my water by 16 ounces and focusing more on the basics: using a scale, focusing on protein and vegetables, walking. I learned taking the tiny bites was not to help my stomach, but my head: it sucks when your meal is over in 3 or 4 bites. I claimed I could not walk because I have grade 4 arthritis in my knee and I’m really busy, but if I get up early, I can get a mile in before I go to work. And I added ankle weights to up the effectiveness. As of now, the scale is moving again after the stall from hell but I’ve also, grudgingly, learned the rules are there for a reason. I’m not here to be austere, at age 59, my only reason for loss is health, and I don’t feel the drive to be thin/attractive, so I still have my little treat: a 70 calorie square of baking chocolate. My calories these days still fall closer to 750 but I’ve lived a life of self-indulgence and self-discipline is hard to come by now.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

Hi Everyone, I'm about 4 weeks since surgery and so far I am having two issues that I am wondering how everyone else is handling (if you have having too). One is that I seem to be having quite a bit of heartburn. I am taking the antacid that my doc prescribed but I seem to be using Tums in between to help - how are you handling if you are having this issue. And secondly, I am having a very hard time getting all my liquids in. If I drink all the liquids my doc wants me to drink I can't seem to eat food. How are you getting all the liquids and food in?

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

Post-Op Hi Everyone I am 1 week and 2 days post op for the gastric sleeve. The first day after surgery was a miserable experience.(Gas) The use of Gas x and peppermint tea was very helpful with the gas pains and stomach discomfort. I haven't had any issues with swallowing pills. Each day get's better and I am able to keep down all liquids. The incision on my upper left side is still a little painful and tender. Overall, I am doing great and have lost 15.6lbs so far. We Got This!
  11. I’ve had sleep apnea for years and it’s always been well controlled, with a AHI less than 1. Immediately after the surgery my sleep apnea has been really bad. I was waking up multiple times a night because I stopped breathing and my AHI shot up to 5 (maybe higher actually since I found myself waking up with my mouth open which the machine can’t record). I got really bad dry bloody nose after being in the hospital and I think that didn’t help. I ended up buying and overnight shipping a new full face mask so that I could sleep safely even if my mouth popped open. Tried it out last night and after a few hours tinkering with the fit I think it will work. Still had a pretty crappy night though. I’m seeing my pulmonologist in a couple weeks for the post surgery follow up and will ask more about this then. I was just wondering if anyone else had trouble post surgery and had suggestions?

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

Wow I still can’t walk much but will when I go back to the office next week. I moved to soft foods a few days earlier too and it got stuck but go slowly. I finally am officially on all solids now and am nervous what to eat.
  13. 14 is so much in a week! I can see why they’re worried. I got on the scale this morning and it’s exactly the same. I wonder if I’m supposed to be doing the bariatric vitamins? I can’t even keep down the regular ones. 20 days is a lot, but you are strong. I’m jealous of all you that actually get to go in to appointments and see your bari people. I haven’t seen a single one in person yet.

I find it interesting that the pre op diet is not the same from surgeon to surgeon. Some are all liquid for 2 weeks, some are protein and veggies with max portion sizes, and some are one day liquid. My surgeon has given me the choice between shakes and low carb high protein low calorie meals (aka chicken/fish and veggies). I am worried about the liver shrinkage so my current plan is to do as many shakes as possible. I say that now but come Jan 4-17 all bets are off (surgery is the 18th).
  15. So liquid diet... I'm down 25lbs since starting it two weeks ago. I was 288lbs at my pre-op bloodwork visit and 263 today. This means I still have about 100lbs to get to a "normal" BMI. I switched to Fairlife protein shakes because I hated the Premier but my doctor wanted me to switch back. He says he has much better results with liver shrinking and Premier. Anyway - TOMORROW is surgery day! Covid test, packing bag... I'm getting ready!

    Day 1 Liquid Diet Pre-Op

As of today I am down 14 pounds in just a day or two over one week on liquids. I met with my dietitian yesterday and she said I am loosing to much to fast. Because I am lactose intolerant I can’t do dairy and I’m diabetic so I can’t do fruit juice. So when we went through my food journal we figured out I was eating/drinking between 500-700 calories a day. So she tweaked it and added more Protein Shakes - I felt so much better yesterday no hunger. I’m down to a 12-14 shirt and 14-16 pants (tight 14 loose 16 in a little over a week but don’t take that as what should happen she made it really clear to me that I need at least 1000 calories a day and Protein is extremely important for my body to be healthy for surgery and recovery. She said it isn’t just about liver shrinking but also optimal health for the surgery. She is a sleeve patient herself and she said it will be 6 months recovery but she is there with me every step of the way! I wasn’t taking in enough calories and while I lost weight I wasn’t doing it the healthy way. Hope that helps! . Good luck glad you started this thread it will be helpful to many I feel!! Also no one told me to start the Vitamins with the liquid diet so just found that out yesterday
  18. We are surgery twins!! I get the sleeve the same day! I met with the dietitian who saved me! Also no one told me to take vitamins at the start of the liquid phase. I only have 20 more days but I think I can now handle it. Already down 14 pounds and a pant size and 2 shirt sizes in just over a week!
  19. Saw my dietitian yesterday and I’m down 14 pounds in one week. She said I’m loosing to much to fast so we went over my food diary and because I’m diabetic no juice and I’m lactose intolerant since a baby no milk so she tweaked and adjusted my food (liquid diet) I’ve already dropped a pant size and 14 shirts are to big now. Also no one told me I was to start vitamins when I started the liquid phase so she had me get those yesterday. I feel a million times better now and I’m not starving anymore! I have 20 more days of this before surgery date and she is meeting with me again next week. I am so glad I reached out to her!!!
  20. I was able to take all but two pills the day I left the hospital (the two I couldn't were really big - I had to wait a couple of weeks on those). I'm pretty sure Colace was one of the ones I took right from the get-go. If they don't bother you going down, then you should be OK.

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

I won't get on the scale. I am still learning that this is a tool. I got frustrated with my self because I had a family emergency and I moved on to soft foods earlier. Sometimes I feel like food is stuck in my throat but I try to slow down and keep moving forward. In any case I'm walking almost 10 miles every week and using MFP. I have to count calories! I hope you all are doing well!

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

Guessing I'm hitting the famous 3 week post op stall. I'm actually up 2 lbs over the last 5 days. Maybe connected to starting puree? Not sure. Focusing on water and protein today. Also, I typically am not weighing mid week. I did today only because I have a zoom meeting with my doc this morning. Have a good day!
  24. During weeks 1-4 if you are on liquids/purees, the restriction won't kick in. You'll feel the restriction when you go on solids. This is why the Dr. suggested to limit the purees by volume, to avoid taking in a lot of cals. (And I guess to train me in the proper portion sizes for later) After the surgery gas dissipated, I haven't experienced stomach pain. While eating or otherwise. Had some discomfort a couple of times when eating puree too fast (big spoonful, not waiting enough time in between) This is more or less what I followed. Week 1. Used a 2oz medicine cup. One every 10-15 minutes. More like 5 minutes toward the end. If too fast, would get stomach pain. Week 2. Liquid diet, protein shakes, etc. I could drink a protein shake (12 oz), in about 30 mins. Just a sip at a time, no particular wait in between. 3-4 shakes per day. Week 3 - 4. Pureed phase. 2 Shakes. 2 snacks. 2 meals (whatever protein was for lunch/dinner, pureed with salsa, broth or mayo). meals limited to 3 fl. oz. (~ 1/3 cup) Week 5. Solids. Dr. suggested 2 shakes, 1-2 snacks, and 2 meals. Meals consisting of 4 oz total. 2 oz protein, 1oz vegs. and 1 oz carbs (optional).

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

Surgery 11/4, I’m eating protein rich “meals” (1/4 cup of canned chicken mashed up with hot sauce or low fat salad dressing is a “go to”) 3 times a day, plus Greek yogurt as a snack. Today, I’m allowed to have “soft” foods, so I will have a Turkey meatball mashed up in homemade no sugar tomato sauce with a tablespoon of ricotta cheese for one of my meals and I can’t wait. I am hoping and wishing for the time when I can have fresh veggies- but all I’ve been approved for at this point is veggies steamed and mashed which… isn’t flavorful no matter what I try to do (and I’m a decent cook, but mushy broccoli is mushy broccoli no matter what herbs you add to it) the way it was told to me, I’ll lose more once I add to my diet. Not sure why, but hoping that’s true. I am down 36 pounds since starting the liquid diet 2 weeks prior to my surgery, and that makes me happy.
