A new phase! Yahoo! Pureed chicken soup tips, please.
Spinoza replied to LouLouM's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I can't see that some tofu or even tempeh pureed in your soup would be any different to pureed chicken. I suspect either might end up a bit grainy. I definitely was not allowed shredded chicken at 8 days - programs really do seem to vary hugely though. I did puree some very soft lamb with veg for my first pureed dinners and it was gorgeous (but I don't have a problem with texture). I am 3 weeks post op today and just had my first soft food (fish pie filling without the potato topping). -
At 6 weeks out, I was averaging about 800kcal a day, 70g protein min, 50g carbs max. Around 6 weeks is when I hit mostly "normal" foods per my plan, and I've been about that ever since. Some days are a little more, some a little less. I am a little "behind" where my program would have me. They suggest closer to 1000kcal per day, especially now that I've started introducing regular exercise again, but that is really a stretch for me. So I'm just focusing on making sure I'm hitting my protein and fluids and listening to my hunger queues. There is no right or wrong, and every program has their own guidelines. Listen to your surgeon/dietician and if you need more personalized guidance, don't hesitate to seek it out!

Had surgery 11/29: a new life starts
vikingbeast replied to JoyLilith's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Don't worry too much about it. I just had a trip to visit a friend who is a real gourmand. He loves good food, and has excellent taste in restaurants. So we went as a group and ordered "family style" and I just ate little bites. The food was very rich, but I was still able to enjoy it, just not as much. I had surgery about three months ago. I have had sushi since then. It can be a lot of rice so I will order a little sashimi and then just one or two pieces of nigiri sushi. You can do this. And you won't have the same problem we in the US do, because portions are not ridiculously huge in Finland like they are here. Onnea ja jatka eteenpäin sisulla 💪 -
how many calories at 6 months post op
vikingbeast replied to mataz78's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Most people can eat nearly anything, albeit in small quantities, after healing. As an example, I'm just short of three months out. I had a long road trip yesterday, on roads that do not go through many towns (in six hours I went through three places with ANY population at all—Nevada is a very remote place). One town had a McDonald's. I had most of a Chicken McDeadlet kid's meal with milk (drank the milk later). Another one literally only had a pizza place. I had half a slice of pizza. I survived. You learn to prioritize protein and let the rest happen as it can (vegetables next, then starches). Bariatric multivitamins aren't actually much different that regular multivitamins; they may be in more easily digestible forms, but most patients don't need that after a few months out. Iron, B12, and calcium are the usual things we need more than others, and those are not so hard to find (and you can get them from food if you truly need to). -
At six weeks out I was around 800 calories a day (I know this because my former NUT blew a gasket at how much I was eating...). Now at twelve weeks out I am eating around 1400.

Feel like I'm starving, Day 6
vikingbeast replied to LouLouM's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The other thing is that immediately post-op, you are still producing a lot of stomach acid... and not eating solid food for that acid to act on. So you get these wrenching "starving" feelings that aren't actually hunger, they're idle stomach acid. Mine went away right around when my incisions stopped itching, so 3-4 weeks, just as I graduated to purées. Now I never have those feelings. -
So hungry 15 minutes after eating
vikingbeast replied to pointlessneedles's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
A few things. 1. You won't really feel the restriction you have until you get to real, solid food. And some foods will make you feel full faster than others. I ate part of a pancake and felt full for hours. Pork makes me feel fuller than chicken or beef. Everybody is different, and every body is different. 2. I had hunger after and discovered, thanks to my surgeon, that what I think is "hunger" is actually reflux/heartburn. It doesn't happen often but yesterday I had a bit of pizza (options were extremely limited) and felt "hungry". I took a Pepcid per my doctor and suddenly didn't feel hungry any more. 3. Not everyone loses their hunger. Most people feel it 'blunted' at first, but some people just don't. 4. Two weeks after surgery, your body is still producing the same amount of stomach acid it did when you had the larger stomach. It takes some time to stop doing that, and in the meantime not only did my stomach growl, I made the most horrible personal noises! It went away around the time my incisions stopped itching, so 3-4 weeks post-op. Stick to your plan. It will help you, and it WILL get better. -

Clear liquids post-Op for 7 days?
TheRealPennyD replied to DaisyAndSunshine's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have one week clear liquids then two weeks of full liquids before I move on to puree foods. There is very little protein on the clear liquids but I believe the point is to be sure your organs are healing and not getting any leaks. Probably want everything to move quickly through the stomach for now while the staple line heals. It's a challenge but worth it. -
One week post op and 1 day.
catwoman7 replied to Appie's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
it's pretty standard for surgeons to prescribe PPI's for awhile after surgery. I had them for a year - but three-six months seems more common now (probably because of the bad rap long-term PPI use has gotten the last few years). so you just now got a lapband? Or did you have one before and this was a revision surgery? I was just a little surprised because that very few surgeons place lapbands any more - it's been largely replaced by the sleeve (as the non-RNY option) -
Thought this was gonna be easy for some reason , but nope 👎. 2 days in and acid reflux, chest pain, shortness of breath that by the 4th day I’m at the ER crying 😢. Well in pain anyway. ECG, aspirin, Tylenol and Mylanta given. Heart if fine - no heart attack for me which I knew. Doc just had lamb done and wicked acid reflux. Doc sends me for chest X-ray. As l stand to take chest x-rays I start to heave like I’m gonna hurl at any moment, but instead of vomiting it’s gas - 3 big beltches before x-ray. Pain level decreases a few notches. X-ray show’s gas - a lot of gas in area, starts me on PPIs and sends me home. ER for a gas attack 🤦🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️. Anyway went to my doctor yesterday and medication to continue to treat acid reflux and week off of work to recover. Spoke to my surgeon today, told him everything and he was like ok - this weekend you can start soft diet. Dude I hardly been drinking any thing now 😂. So anyway the past 2 days have been better and can drink more without splashback so hopefully I can start soft foods next week. This is my story so far, hopefully the rest will be successfully boring 😁. I am sorry for typos and big spaces but it seems my screen is black so I can’t see the words I’m typing other than the emojis. All the best.

Hi everyone, this is my first post on my new journey and hoping for lot’s of support from here. So just like I mentioned in the title I’ve been having issues with acid reflux and trapped gas which is causing significant chest pain and shortness of breath that went to ER. Now on medication for acid reflux and taking week off work to recover properly. The last 2 days I have now been able to drink more so that is good. Spoke with my surgeon today x Telehealth and didn’t really seem to interested but I can move to soft foods on the weekend. Well that’s about it, hopefully it will get better from here. Any tips anyone wants to throw my way I’m all ear’s. If writing looks funny it’s because my screen is in dark mode and I’m writing blind as I can’t see the words on the screen 🤦🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️😁. Oh but I can see the emojis- hahaha 🤣

No longer feeling confident about having surgery
SleeverSk replied to Angelina1210's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
At the end of the day its your choice, i didnt tell anyone because i didnt want negativity to make me change my mind, when i got to the hospital i was scared and basically changed my mind. The nurses and surgeon treated it as pre op nerves. I wish i didnt do it. I am 5 months out still tired, feel unwell most days struggle with what to eat most days but i have lost weight although that has stalled already. I also find myself slipping back into my old habits....so for me I should have tried good old fashion diet because the habits that got me fat arent going to be stopped by the sleeve. Sorry i know you wanted positive encouragement but i think its important to know all possible outcomes. At the end of the day its your choice and you will be anxious about no matter what anyone says. I had no negativity before but i still freaked out. Sorry i am probably not helping i will delete my comment if you want. -
Percent of Weight Loss Predicted
Arabesque replied to LadyH's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
100% agree with @Jaelzion. I had tried many diets & eating programs & lost hundreds of kgs. I’ve run, walked, swam, biked 1000s of km. The 60-75kg weight fluctuation I’d struggled & fought to maintain for decades suddenly became 91kgs & I could not shift a single kg. I could see what was ahead of me & it wasn’t good physiologically or psychologically. The 31kg (67lbs) I needed to lose was a lot on my short & smaller framed body & more of a challenging given I was 54 & menopausal. That I lost 42kg (92lbs) has been a blessing & I’m thankful every day. And yes it was worth the $10 000 out of pocket cost (Australian health insurance is pretty crappy.) But I can understand your feelings this close post surgery. It’s all very scary & many question their decision the first couple of weeks. Hopefully, as the weeks pass you’ll feel more positive & confident about your surgery & what you’ll achieve. All the best. -
Any April 2021 surgeries?!
Blueslily replied to KidaandRoux's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello fellow April Sleevers, I met with my surgery team for my 8 month follow up appointment yesterday. Wow, can you believe it. Time has flown. I'm doing good. I'm at goal. I dont want to get any smaller. So, the past 2-3 weeks, I've been focused on maintaining versus losing any more weight. I have to kick myself in the behind a little. Water intake and strength exercises could be better. I'm still eating on plan. No cheating. The dietitian asked me about the holidays. I was like, oh please, I could care less about all that food stuff. I walk by tons of candy, pies, and cakes in the grocery store and none of it calls out to me. Food is everywhere these days. I feel blessed that I just don't have any craving or desire for foods that wont help me with my goals. As we move into a new month, December, how's everyone doing? Anyone concerned about the holidays this month? Would be great to hear from folks as we bring 2021 to a close soon. -
Cancelling my surgery again??!!
Sunnyway replied to LadyH's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My surgery is jut 13 days away and all of the hospitals within 150+ miles are full of COVID patients and turning away transfer patients. 88% of of those hospitalized with COVID were not vaccinated or not fully vaccinated. (I am vaccinated and have received the booster.) My surgeon is reevaluating the schedule week by week.. As of today, my surgery is still on, but I recognize that it could get postponed. -
Long story short: I'm in PA. I had a Lap Band placed in November 2010...then had it removed in December 2020 because of complications. I'm now getting RNY on December 20th and started my 2-week liquid diet on December 6th. In one of my pre-op requirements (upper GI), a very small hiatal hernia was observed, so we're going to get rid of him. I call him Squishy. R.I.P, my Squishy. I'm excited! Ugh, though.....I have so many clothes that are going to be enormous on me...but I also have lots of things in smaller sizes that I refused to get rid of over the years, so I guess I'll be okay. Good luck, all!

November Surgery Buddies!!!
Spinoza replied to Tristenhilpert97's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yes, I have a few meals out lined up over the next 3 weeks and I think I'm just going to order whatever the softest starter is, to come out with everyone else's main courses. If there's soup on the menu better still. I haven't told anyone other than my partner and children about the surgery but all my family and friends are so used to me permanently 'being on a diet' so they won't turn a hair at this latest restriction to my eating. 😏 Gmast - if you had asked me in my before life to split a meal I would definitely have looked at you as if you were mad. 😍 -
Public Service Announcement - Careful crossing your legs!
catwoman7 replied to MandoGetsSleeved's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
interesting. I had peroneal nerve damage three or four years ago, and the whole lower half of my left leg was numb for about eight months. I attributed it to a sprained ankle - but maybe it was coincidence?? At any rate, the feeling eventually came back, but it took about eight months. -
I was right where you are pre surgery.... Rest your mind....you are making the best decision possible for yourself. Pre Op and 3 weeks Post Op will be a challenge but you will be just fine. I am 16 weeks Post Op and down 57 lbs and my life has settled back into a predictable routine and I feel like a million bucks....you will not regret any of this and your Health will be improved 100%.

Serious sore throat from intubation?
Bariatric Boy replied to Jerald180's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had a sore throat for about 3 weeks Post Op.....I found that warm decaf tea helped soothe my irritation but it will go away for sure. -
I am going to lose my mind. I've waited all year for surgery. Not just bariatric, but 2 additional procedures that must be done to prevent further serious problems. They have cancelled and rescheduled my surgery 3 times already. Anyone in the US knows insurance starts over (usually) on Jan. 1, and now, one week away from surgery, they just called me to let me know they may cancel me again, just 16 days from year's end. I have not been able to get a job, go on vacays, see family, or celebrate the holidays, all because I've been "on call" for this surgery. In fact, I was supposed to have a much lesser surgical procedure done elsewhere that could easily have been accomplished as far back as last summer, but this bari program doesn't commit to, and isn't accountable for, any obligations or schedule. This is ruining my entire life, and if they cancel again, I don't think I will be able to get it done. They've already charged over $40K in gross charges without one iota of actual health care to improve any medical condition whatsoever. It's all been unnecessary procedures, tests, appointments, etc. I'm wondering how other people can get health care at the drop of a hat, especially if they're in the hospital because they have not gotten a Covid vaccine, but the rest of us, who are personally paying the entire year thousands and thousands of dollars for insurance premiums and copays and coinsurance and deductibles in order to guarantee medical access, are denied. Spoiler: It's us idiots responsible enough to have insurance that are keeping the medical world afloat. I'm just waiting for the class action lawsuits to start. If this isn't discrimination, I don't know what is. In the US, we literally have governors and mayors calling the shots as opposed to medical experts. It's all political. Since when in the free world do janky politicians decide who gets care and who does not? I am utterly disgusted.

Does anyone have great advice for me on alternative protein shakes or waters, I am allergic to whey protein. I have the garden of life and orgain but I would love to find a good protein water. I am quite tired of the vanilla and chocolate too, I’d love to find a good berry one. I bought an unflavored one and it was horrible! I am 10 weeks post op and struggling to get all my protein in. Thank you!

November Surgery Buddies!!!
Tgregorski replied to Tristenhilpert97's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The only one that I have been sharing meals with is my husband and he is happy to because he now calls me his cheap date (haha). As for going out with friends, I found that if I just order an appetizer then I have fewer leftovers and I can still get my own plate. I had the same situation with the weight loss, for some reason I went back and forth from 217 to 218 for a week. But finally this morning I was down to 216! -
Clear liquids post-Op for 7 days?
JDLane replied to DaisyAndSunshine's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My week 1 was clears plus protein shakes. Then full liquids which included yogurts, jello, soups, thinned oatmeal, etc. It gets much easier when you on to full liquids and then puree's feels like heaven when you reach that!
