1. So I went for my six weeks dr appointment and I have lost another 8 pounds. Starting weight 202. Current weight 166. Surgery day may 6. So happy. First time in 10 years under 170.
2. Surgery 5/22 . I have lost 15 pounds in 4 weeks and I guess I'll take what I can get. I'm trying to figure out what works for me. The first 14 came off in the first 10 days. I exercise about 3 times a week and take in very few carbs. Maybe 20-30 per day. I hate all protein shakes post op so I try to eat it all. Hoping to lose 16 pounds by my 30th birthday in August. Not sure that's going to happen though.

viv's weight loss trip

April 11, 2008 As most overweight people i have been fat since about 5 or 6 years old. I've always been into sports so i had lots of muscles etc. I was made fun of but but i took it OK. I'm a real jokester. Anyway i did every diet took weight off put it back on and then added another 20 or so pounds. when i reached 354 i couldn't believe it. So I told myself lap band for me. July 10, 2007 attended the meeting at NYU the next week i started the journey. 6 months of Dr. visits, all the stuff NYU wanted and then on March 3, 2008 I was banded by Dr. Ren. I have lost a total of 30 pounds so far, I got my first fill 4/8/08 doesn't seem like its tight enough i need more, next fill 5/7/08 I will ask for more!!!! April 19th still the same holding at 30 or so pounds with no restriction, I can and do eat everything, i called the Dr. Ren's office last week they told me to eat meat and chicken.............I am sooo confused they tell us not to eat that stuff cause it will get stuck.what's up. Next fill may 7th we will see. I want to stop crying about this. Viv:sad:

Loose skin???

Gotcha Gooood to know thank you . For a few years now i have worn super tight tanks under my clothes I got so used to the feeling that I couldnt leave house with out one on . So im hoping that will help thats what they tell preggo people to do. It makes you look like 10 lbs smaller I could never have the feeling of fat being loose , I know im nuts!!
5. When I met my surgeon august 2012, I was 332 When I started my 2 week preop diet I was 315 Day of surgery I was 300 Today I'm 247 Total loss of 85lbs, 53 since surgery 5 months ago Surgery was 12/10/12 My starting bmi was 51, and currently is 38 I think it what I have lost thus far is fantastic however I consider myself a slower loser compared to the ones you mentioned losing a 100lbs in a few months.
6. I am almost 20 weeks out I think (early for math) and have lost about 2.3 per week on average for a total of 46 pounds since day of surgery. I lost about 10 on the pre surgery liver diet. I was 208 on day of surgery with a BMI of 37. I'm 162 today. I've been pretty terrible about getting on my water all along. Was never a big drinker before so even getting in 40 ounces feels like a ton to me. I'm sure that has impacted my loss. I do okay with protein most days, but probably take in more carbs than I realize through snacking. This week I am trying to be diligent about water, protein and tracking. I had gotten away from tracking. Hoping that will get me back on track and losing again so I can lose this last 25 pounds.
7. Made this for dinner. My wife hates cooked cabbage and chowed it all down. Makes about 10 servings Head of Cabbage (Cored and roughly chopped) 2 Boxes of chicken or miso broth 1 scallion chopped 1 Tablespoon of minced garlic Turkey sausage sliced Pepper (to taste) Salt (use sparingly, there is a lot of salt in broth, cabbage, and sausage) Kitchen Bouquet (to taste) This comes out as a brothy based Soup. I am ball parking the nutritional information: Calories 120 Fat 4.5 Carb 13 Protein 7.5 I realize this is a little higher on the carbs, but when you are looking for a satisfying meal this might work.
8. So I could eat all the time. Yep I'm up at 2:30 am eating (drinking half a protein shake). Every 3-4 hours I'm eating, the hunger is unbearable. I'm still losing just eating and drinking like it's going out of style. I'm watching my diet very closely, often opting for carrots with a piece of cheese or a bowl of salad with some tuna. I'm close to 10 months out and this is by far the most concerning event I have been through. My intake hasn't increased just my frequency in hunger. Knock on wood I'm not craving a little Debbie snack cake, just hungry.
9. Omg the gas pain is HORRIBLE! It feels like you're being stabbed sometimes. It feels absolutely nothing like gas that we are all familiar with. I had no idea that was coming even though I did lots of reading/research/etc. Thats because the gas in the body cavity itself and not the stomach. It took me about 10 days for all the gas to get out of my system and it was really bad when I was trying to sleep flat for the night. The only thing I could do to make it feel better was to walk for a good half hour and then it started to subside only to flare again in 5 hourse or so. It also could be the incision spot where it is healing not on the skin but in the fat content etc. I didn't have that problem so I couldn't tell you. BUT the gas is VERY real. It's even related to shoulder pains since the nerve around the diaphragm can get irritated and the pain travels the nerve up to the shoulder.

Anxiety through the roof! Help!

Your anxiety is TOTALLY normal! I'm a mom, I get it. I was pretty terrified too. But I am now 10 months post op and have NO REGRETS! You will get through this! I want to piggy back on the person who said there is no safer place than an OR table. I agree. If your surgeon thought there was a reason why you might not make it, and that the risk was greater than having a successful outcome, they wouldn't let you have surgery. I know you are scared...but do it anyway. Conquer the fear! You're going to learn so much about yourself and your capabilities after this surgery. It's as much a self love adventure as it is a weight loss one!

Pre-op diet

I lost 13 lbs on my 10 pre-op diet. I didn't cheat - was too afraid my liver wouldn't shrink enough! I stuck with protein shakes, cottage cheese, and broths
13. Increase food intake or increase the meds? If the meds aren't working then call your doctor back. You have to nourish your body but you work up Protein and Fluid goals. Set small bench marks for yourself. Your only goal should be to not get dehydrated. If that means sipping all day then just take a sip once every 10 minutes. However I would address the anxiety first. A large part of being successful with this is mental. Get the anxiety under control so you can deal.
14. MrsGreaves. Not to sound gross but have you had a BM? In the beginning that can cause you to hold weight. 20 in the first week is amazing, I think I lost 10. I'm also stuck but I'm in week 4. I had to find a different Protein because I became very intolerant of the shakes. You've heard it before but I'll say it anyways: make sure you are getting your Water and protein in this healing phase too Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
15. I found a website to help you get an incentive to lose weight. It's called dietbetter.com. I heard about it on the Today show website. You join or start games by betting a certain amount of money that you'll lose 4% of your body weight in 4 weeks or 10% in 6 months. The bets start as low as $10 and go up to over $100! I joined a game on April 1st with a bet of $25 that I will lose 4% in 4 weeks. So far I've lost just over 5lbs since April 1st. and i have about 1.8 lbs to go until April 29th. (which i know i can lose!) If you meet your goals you win a portion of the pot! It's a great way to make yourself accountable for losing weight and get rewarded for your efforts too!
16. Just a little background info. I was banded in 3/29. As of last week, I have 4cc's in my band. I have been feeling great, and haven't had any major issues until today. This morning when I woke up, I didn't have time to make my egg, so I grabbed a piece of deli turkey breast and took one bite. Oh my, it felt like it took 5 minutes for it to make it to my stomach. I also got a horrible stabbing pain in my upper back/shoulder. I just figured it was morning restriction, and gave up on breakfast. I didn't feel stuck (I have had it happen once on a bite of rice.) 10 minutes later, I took a sip of water to take my achiphex, and it felt like it was sitting there like a rock in my stomach. I didn't attempt to eat anything until lunch. Lunch went down, but again it was just a strange unsettled feeling...like if I moved the wrong way I was going to throw up. I drank water all day and things were fine. Tonight, I had a mouth full of tuna and got that horrible rock in the stomach feeling again. I am really trying not to throw up, because I don't want to damage the band. I bought pineapple juice and have been sipping it. I was just wondering if any of you more experienced bandsters could give me a word of advice. A friend of mine who has had the band for a few years thought that maybe I had a lower block...not sure. Any advice would be greatly appreciated...the back/shoulder pain is so bad that it hurts to take a full breath of air! Thanks in advance. Amber

Accident - now what?

I would imagine it really varies. If it was a 3-day weekend, raining or something else going on that would generate more accidents it will take longer, assuming none of those factors are present my experience would be 5-10 days. When my son's car was totalled we got the payoff offer at about the 8th day. We knew it was totalled before that because that was the mechanic's opinion. Not sure how this works among companies, but with Mercury when there is a total it goes to a whole different department for them to determine the payoff amount. As I told you I was very happy with the amt Mercury paid us (they even paid the sales tax since my son had had the car less than a year). What I was NOT happy with was how LONG it took for them to send us a check. Based on my clients' experiences--barring any snafus--it takes about 3 weeks to get a check. For some reason it took TWO MONTHS for our check to come. I didn't call and ask about this sooner because I was trying my best not to be an impatient & demanding claiment. Even tho it was the other party's fault in my son's accident I went thru my insurance because I'm not impressed with the company that the other person is with (won't name them). If he had been hit by someone who was with State Farm I probably would have gone thru them directly because of their good service reputation. Hopefully you took your lienholder off the policy and off your registration when you paid them off. This sometimes complicates matters. If it's a total you will need to sign & mail the pink slip to the insurer. Be sure to send this certified mail. And keep a copy of everything you sign and send back as well as the date you sent it. That is just strange that the guy would lie about the number of people injured. It's not like it wouldn't be a matter of record. Of course his company would find out the facts. I can't imagine why he would do that. Hopefully he has plenty of BI/PD coverage.

68 pounds down in 7 weeks

Wow! Thats almost 10 lbs a week! The sleeve is looking better and better to me!
19. 10-15lbs in 3 wks???? yeah that's a LOT to ask from someone who probably doesn't have over 100lbs to lose. that said; my dr suggested 6-8lbs per month was adequate for someone like me, who he suggested a 60lb loss. that really doesn't sound attainable - but if you can do it ... more power to ya!!! seriously. my port hurt well into month 2. all i was doing was cardio - walking & elliptical at that time; wasn't doing ab or core exercises. took me a bit of time, i didn't have much belly fat to mask it's presence - the port (maybe???). take it easy. there is no race in lbs dropped or how soon you can do crunches. congrats to date on your progress!!!!
20. Hi! I have a referal to Dr Martin, no insurance, public system. Has anyone been banded under this system in PA Hospital Brisbane? I have soooooo many questions, although they are lovely when I phone no one can give me even a ball park figure for waiting time.I have a letter saying I am on a waiting list, but have not been categorized yet, My referal was faxed to them 01/10/08, the letter recieved from PA is dated 13/10/08. I have'nt had my 1st consultation yet either? and no appointment date yet. After the 1st consultation how long do you wait to be banded? The other questions tha maybe someone can answer: Is there any doctors that will do the op on a payment plan, I really don't mind paying, just have'nt got that amount of money up front. I don't even care if I have to go interstate or O/S. I have a very strong family history of diabetes melitis (father, all his siblings and my Grandmother died in a diabetic coma) Obesity, my mother is over 200kg and in a nursing home, unable to look after herself. My BMI is 41.35. If anyone has any advice/help/suggestions I would love to hear them. Thanks everyone, Debra

Already Cheating!

I was banded on 4/8/10 and find that evenings are hardest for me as well. My doc says 3 meals a day only, no snacking the only thing that helps at all is I make Protein shakes everymorning and then freeze the rest as pops so no added calories and get the extra needed protein. Go in for first fill 5/10. like the others have said tho don't beat up on yourself this is a one day at a time journey.

23. Hi All, new to the board. Ran across it today when looking for ideas other than broth, Jello and Water. I had my surgery on Tuesday and came home yesterday. I am already so over this liquid diet. I have found it interesting to see different phases from different doctors. My doctor hasn't said anything at all about Protein for the first week. Just Clear liquids. I'm not supposed to start protein until Phase II when I move to pureed foods. My DH has made so many runs to the grocery store already trying to find different things that may suit my taste buds. SF popsicles leave a horrible aftertaste, SF apple cider was way too sweet. JELLO has been good, but there's only so much JELLO a person can handle, y'know? Water has really been the only think I have preferred to have. I think I may try a small amount of thinned out full liquids and see how that goes. I'm looking forward to sharing and learning from all of you.
24. So my experience was that the shoulder pain and the belching are different types of gas. The shoulder pain is from the inert gas they introduced into your torso during surgery to expand the area so they could see what they were doing. I read that when you sit up/stand up it creates upward pressure which is expressed as shoulder pain. Gas-X strips will not help this pain. Only walking seems to dissipate it, and it should be gone by about 10 days or so. Belching, on the other hand, for me was a symptom of uncontrolled gastric acid, which started about 10 days out, when I started taking full fluids. Took me several days to figure it out - the Nexium my doctor recommended wasn't doing a thing for me, and EVERYTHING I put in my stomach produced belching so bad (like large belches every few seconds) that I couldn't continue to eat, or talk, or do anything. It would go on like that for 30 minutes at a time. I was scheduled to go back to the office after 2 weeks, and was concerned about whether I would be able to go back, if it continued. Before I had to deal with that, though, I finally realized what it was, and changed to Prevacid, along with a Zantac here and there when I felt like I needed it. Problem solved! So a question, at least about the belching - are you on a PPI?
25. Thank you all so much for each of your opinions and advice. I didn't expect such a huge response. I jog alot and have put on a considerable amount of muscle that way, but I don't lift weights. I am allergic to gyms...sooo...I havn't joined one. I tried a gym with a friend who advised me to "Omg..Try Spinning...It's A-Mazing" and the next morning it felt like I broke my vagina. I couldn't sit down for dang near three days. I tried Curves but the women in my neighborhood are serious oversharers and I ended each 30 min session wanting to punch people in the face. This is why I jog. I think I am going to work for 10 more pounds...meet in the middle like some of you suggested. That way I won't feel like I am quitting, and then I will follow the rest of your advice and accept my body. It's sooo hard though because I am so tired of my doctor's telling me I am overweight. Today I lost it in the car- I just started crying, and I usually don't cry. I saw my Lady Doctor for Lady stuff and I heard it again. I got used to hearing it from the NUT, so much that I expected it, but from my lady doctor? It felt like the old days again...even the dentist told me I needed to lose weight before surgery. After my apt today I just felt like I will never be healthy enough. I thought I was past the stupid "you need to lose some weight" lectures. Now that I am over my pity party I would like to say Thanks so much and I truely appreciate your honest feedback. I will never stop this lifestyle. I signed up for my first 5K on Sept 2nd. I'm training right now and just bought my first pair of race shoes - Neon Pink!!! I will post a pic after the race. I will increase my calories as suggested and add one more day of jogging, but I will not work out 6 days a week. That is just "nazi" as one of you said. Again...you all are the best. Thanks again!
