PCOSers: How did you lose Pre-Op Weight?
RinR replied to bookaddict's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
When is your surgery date? Is it 10 to 15 pounds you need to lose or 10% of what you weigh?? Didn't your surgeons office give you an eating plan to drop the weight before your surgery?? Two weeks before my surgery I was put on a total liquid diet. I had to order the Protein powder to make the shakes from a web-site. They have you loss this weight prior to surgery for 2 reasons First is because when you are lying down, as you will be for surgery, your liver rests on the very top of your stomach. This is were the band is placed and the Dr. has to move the liver out of his way so he can put the band on. Being on the diet/liquid diet 2 weeks prior to surgery will shrink your liver. And second, 99.9% of us will have a "last" huge meal, and if we were not told to loss some weight before our surgery we would be eating something while being wheeled into the operating room! -
this just isn't working for me
lotzasunshine replied to kdaniels11604's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
DON'T GIVE UP!!! I haven't lost much either and was banded a month after you. If you are too tight then go to your dr and get a small unfill. Get off the diet pills!!!! They may be changing how your body is reacting to food and making it more difficult to eat. Drink shakes, they will go down just as easy as the slider foods you are eating. Try pudding with Protein powder mixed in, or cream of chicken soup. Puree it if the little bits of chicken are bothering you. Kick the exercise up by 10 minutes a day, then increase it again in 2 weeks, This is what I'm trying right now. You CAN do this!!! You chose the band knowing that it would be hard work, you believed in yourself then, do it again!!!!! You are wise to be on the boards here asking for encouragement and help. There are many people who can help!! PM me if you want to chat more about it. Just don't give up! -
Please help. I need advice, I don't want to run to the doc for nothing... I had my surgery a week ago Friday (17th). I was pretty good about not lifting anything for a few days, but I have two children under the age of 3 (one who is just 13 months old and still nursing). I've also started walking so I've been active. My pain has never completely gone away, but that doesn't concern me. What concerns me is that it seems to be getting worse around my port incision. I can feel a mass underneath... scar tissue? the port? A HERNIATION??? IDK!!! It hurts to stand up, but I'd say only a 2 or 3. I'm not on pain meds anymore. SHOULD I BE CONCERNED OR IS THIS NORMAL?? THANKS!

My first throw up since I was sleeved exactly 3 weeks ago!
Sassygirl06 replied to iiPinkxLoveii's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i have thrown up a few times. usually because i forget and i eat to fast. the weird part is that it doesnt hurt to throw up anymore. also it tastes the same as it did going down. mabye because of all the acid reducers...so there really isnt that much acid for it to mix with and so none of the nasty taste. also when i throw up i dont get those horrible spasms from it. i just feel like i need to throw up and so i got to the bathroom and kinda clench my stomach muscles and out it comes. as for gaining the weight, its just water. there is no way you gained that much without it being water. you have to eat 3500 calories in order to gain a pound, and i doubt that you were able to eat enough to gain 4! its hard for us to even get 3500 calories in in a week in the begining....so cheer up...the next time you get on the scale you will have lost all that water and then some actual pounds and you will be jumping for joy! keep smiling and thinking happy thoughts and soon you'l be flying on cloud nine -

Thanks Rebel. Congrats on your mushie phase! I was so excited when I started mushies! As far as being nervous, its completely normal to feel that way! I was so scared about "how does it feel to feel full?". I can only tell you listen to your body and when you feel full stop. I have learnedd that the hard way. Asfar as the weight, it is still at a stall but I have noticed some inches coming off. So thats good rght? Lol I'm trying to not stress about it anymore. Just push on. My water intake is more and my excercising is going good so its bound to come off soon I hope. good luck with your journey amd same goes to you. If you have questions, want to vent or anything. Im here! -
Question about hunger?
spainter2009 replied to Bingcherry's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was about 2 weeks out and I was hungry I said it was head hunger most. I am not 10 months out and I get hungry my tummy will tell me HEY I NEED TO EAT !!!!. I do seem to still get hungry and I think that I am starving but I try not to eat. The one thing that I am finding that in the afternoons I want to munch on chips or something salty. I am having a tuff time with Protein and it not hurting my pouch so I am not sure where to go or how to get it all in. -
Weight stall rant....
alwaysvegas replied to fuzzyangelbear's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
30 POUNDS down! do not lose sight of that! That's an incredible accomplishment and because you said you're already feeling better that's a great goalpost you just passed! Stalls are common and many are just part of your body adjusting post-surgery. I had two stalls of almost a month each, but weight loss did kick back into gear. Yes, it can be disappointing, but I also tried to not lose sight of the accomplishments: sleep apnea cured, pre-diabetes cured, cholesterol cured, high blood pressure cured. There is SO much more than just the weight loss along the way. It looks like you're doing everything right and you will be able to eat a wider variety of foods as you get further out, so don't get overly-concerned over a stall. Having a wider variety of food choices can actually be a challenge because those include calorie-dense foods that packed our weight on the the first place. For now, try and maintain focus on a healthier lifestyle and don't forget that you are giving yourself a longer, healthier life! Best of luck to ya! -
Does everyone have hair loss?
Mickey527 replied to onenuttynurse's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had the band placed in Sept. and have been really worried about how much hair I have been losing. to the point where I would go 3 days without shampooing because I couldn't deal with the clogged drain and the hair that I pulled from my brush. And if I ran my hands through my hair I would get 10-20 strands each time, all day long. and my pillowcase would be covered when I woke up. I do have to say that it is slowing down. Yesterday when I washed it I only had 3 strands come out and about 20 in the brush. When I run my hands through now I get maybe 2, sometimes none, and no hair on my pillowcase for the past few nights. I have always gotten enough protein and the Dr said it might have been my gallbladder which could have caused some of the loss but since my surgery last week I see a great improvement. I always had thin hair, but alot of it, now I have 1/2 of what I had before and it is thinner. I don't see the new short growth yet but it's early. I do have to say, that no matter how many people on these boards reassured me that it would grow back, I was still not a believer and it really was worrisome. -
2 Weeks Post Op.. So Freaking Hungry!!
honk replied to rae.holmes's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am suprised you were on solids one week post op. Did you move ahead of your doctor's food schedule? Anyway. Do you have a food scale? I highly recommend a digital food scale so you can measure out your protein. My doctor says 3 oz of protein (mushies during recovery and then solids). If you are on solids have about 1/2 cup of veggies and when the food is gone stop eating. Hard I know but that's why it's called bandster hell. -
2 Weeks Post Op.. So Freaking Hungry!!
Violet953 replied to rae.holmes's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That's what happened to me too...It's very normal. I am trying my best not to eat too much, and I'm exercising like crazy...My first fill is not until the 8th and I can't wait because I have very little restriction!! You just have to fight those hunger pains, but my doctor told me to increase my calories and it would help...so that's what I did....It does help...mine pretty much went away but there are times where I get them still. It's not nearly as bad as the first couple weeks of surgery though! -
2 Weeks Post Op.. So Freaking Hungry!!
Mrs. Curtis replied to rae.holmes's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I only had to do 24 hours liquids prior to surgery. I am now 2 weeks post op . I had surgery on the 15th of February and returned on the 27th of February so about a week and a half off. I know others have posted on here about going back to work days after but I would say that would of been way to soon for me. -

3 Weeks Post Op--burning pain, not incision site.
ElisabethD replied to vsg5649's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my VSG 7th of April. The pain I have is exactly the way you describe it. Talked to my surgeon earlier this week. He said that they might have ripped a nerve. But for the last days has It got better from day to day. Hope you are feeling better as well:)! (Excuse any spelling mistakes, I am Norwegian English is a second language;) ) -
fairy, i cant remember when i started getting up TONS to pee it was pretty early though - maybe 6.5 weeks ??? ... at it's worst, i counted it was 15 times in one night... absolutely CRAZY!

Restriction is an elusive thing in my experience also. But I'm also a new bandster with one fill in my VG band. What I have experienced is the night craving munchie monsters have gone into hiding. I eat somewhat smaller portions also during the day. So, for now I'm waiting on my next fill in a week and trying to work my tool! Terry

2 questions: Laughing and Steri-strips
MistyD65 replied to charlie4171's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I haven't noticed pain when laughing. But early this morning I woke up and was laying on my stomach, then raised up my right side a bit(where the port is) and coughed. That made my scar hurt more than it has since the first week. And it continued to hurt for a while, esp when I was getting out of bed a few hours later. It's back to normal now, thank goodness. I still have a bit of the synthetic scab on some of the scars and my surgeon removed the steristrips from my port scar last Friday. Those steristrips are tenancious little buggers! The skin under them is now pretty red and itchy. The itchiest though is right around the margins of where the strips were. But nothing like it was about 5 days after surgery. Oi! I read this hint about removing left-over adhesive...use a pencil eraser, very gently over the adhesive. Works great! -
I stalled on this last week but I'm one month post-op today, and 30 pounds down, including the 2 week pre-op diet. Here are pics taken the night before the pre-op diet and some taken today. The night before my 2 week pre-op diet @282 Today, 1 month post-op @ 251 NSV: I left work before surgery wearing 3X scrub set, returned after 3 weeks wearing a 2X set with room.

Alcohol...you do, you dont? How soon?
ParrotheadCathy replied to IrBaileyzMa's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Alcohol doesn't affect you differently than before the band. But once you lose, it may take less alcohol to have the same effect because of the change in ratio of body mass:alcohol. You may feel the effects a little sooner because you may not be able to eat as much of a "cushion" in advance of drinking and as you lose weight, the alcohol affects less mass and therefore you feel it differently. I went on a cruise with 500 friends 5 weeks after surgery (go to www.parrotheadcruise.com if you want to see what that's like)...and I drank every day. Like before banding. I didn't lose an ounce on the trip, but I didn't gain either. That's what you really have to consider -- the calories. An ounce of rum is 60 calories. Add mixers to your rum, tequila, etc. and you can take in a lot of empty calories very quickly! Beer is carbonated and while plenty of people drink it, I couldn't at first. I tried but it just made me belch nearly nonstop. Now, almost 6 months out, I drank a beer and a half on Saturday with no problems other than feeling really full on just beer, with no food. -
Oh yes V.A. ...I'm starting the Airborne on Monday. I get it in little packets that can be added to bottled Water and it will be my beverage of choice for the week prior to surgery. (sure hope there's nothing in there that will affect surgery...don't think so). I've been to Mexicalli twice now and never have seen the mall...sure hope I get a chance to this time. I've allowed a day of flexibility at the end of my trip to Mexicalli just in case of complications. If I get discharged from the hospital on time, I'll have a whole day to kill....if I get bored I might go to the mall, walk around and pass gas for them! (I'm sure they'll be thrilled that Medical Tourism has come to their part of the country). Vitamins......um....er.....I'm not taking any. Seriously now, should I start now? I never can remember the dang things...I know I'll need them after...but will it really have time to help boost my system if I start now? Water I already drink alot of...so I'm safe there. Tracy

How long did it take you to notice?
Remmy75 replied to MickeyMax95's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am not quite 2 months post op and I am down 70 pounds from my starting weight in May. People are starting to notice that I have lost weight. I saw a girl I work with for the first time in like 6+ weeks between my time off and hers and when she saw me all she said was holy crap your thin. I see it sometimes other times I don't see it. When I put on clothes that actually fit and aren't too big, then i really see it. So mostly I see it when I go to work as I had to buy some new work clothes as I couldn't fudge it anymore and its crazy. -
What is the risk of a round of golf?
NewYearNewMe2010 replied to ChewysTee's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think in 5 weeks you will be ok. After your first post op appointment & fill you will know if your port is secure. I would take it easy until then. Any big golf swing might disrupt your port early on. I was told at my 4 week post op appointment to return to all my normal activities. I hope all goes well for you!
