Pre-Op Liquid Diet
fit2cmygirlsgrow replied to StefanieSparklePants's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Someone suggested making your own broth (if you can have broth on your pre-op diet). I made my own last night and it's pretty yummy. Just watch the sodium in your spices. Much better than the bought stuff. My broth and sugar-free fudgesickles are getting me through. I also like my sugar-free chocolate jello puddings. I add my unflavored protein to my fat free Greek yogurt also. Taste better that way than in drinks. I also bought the ketone strips so I could tell if I were in ketosis. I love the sugar-free chocolate muscle milk 100 Val's version. -
Flavored Yogurt During Full Liquids Period
JohnT posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am five days out of surgery and in the full liquids phase of my diet. I'm wondering if anyone has had bad results with any flavored yogurts out there. I'm looking at trying the Yoplait Greek 100 cal yogurt but it has 7 g of sugar per serving. Has anybody else had any experiences with these types of yogurts either positive or negative? -

My surgery is coming up in 3 days... I can only have yogurt and water today until surgery. I'm not sure if I'm hungry or if I just miss chewing -
I'm a year out and am eating between 1,000 and 1,200 calories a day. I usually have a couple of prunes ,an English muffin with goat cheese or peanut butter and a cup of coffee for breakfast. Lunch might be yogurt with 1/4 cup frozen fruit. A snack might be a hard boiled egg or 6 triscuits with hummus. Supper is usually chicken, pork or fish with some sort of veggie and then usually 1/4 cup cottage cheese or a grain(couscous or barley). And then a fudge bar or some sort of protein before bed and of course 6-8 glasses of water.

Time Between Liquids and Yogurt
Djmohr replied to Indieflickers's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Most of the time I wait however every once in a while when I have to be somewhere early I will wait 10 to 15 minutes before eating my yogurt. I never eat and drink at the same time. -
95 percent of the time I have just a Protein shake for breakfast. Otherwise I will have a yogurt with protein granola, cottage cheese or maybe high protein oatmeal. I try to save my carbs for lunch and dinner. I am 10 months post op and on regular food.

Time Between Liquids and Yogurt
Indieflickers replied to Indieflickers's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
@@catwoman7 they said to stop drinking half an hour before a meal and to wait 45 minutes after a meal. I'm not sure if if yogurt counts though since it's considered a full liquid, but my NUT is incredibly slow to respond to questions. -
10 DAYS OUT, THINGS GOING TOO GOOD?
Daisee68 replied to skinnydawg73's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
You definitely need to get in the habit of eating slower. Just because you can do all that stuff fast doesn't mean you should. Even with yogurt I set a timer on my phone for 1 minute and make myself wait 1 minute in between every bite. This is one of the hardest habits for me. When I am eating with others around and can't use that timer, I feel a little lost. I know it will become habit eventually but a struggle right now. And when I have solid foods and eat too fast, it is very uncomfortable and almost always comes back up. -
So this is a rather random and specific question - do I have to wait half an hour after drinking Water before I can have yogurt? I've been getting up pretty early to walk every morning because it gets hot so quickly. I take my mountain of Vitamins with 16 ounces of water, wait half an hour and then go walk. I've realized though that I need to eat something with Protein and carbs before walking. However, if I do anything remotely resembling exercise less than an hour after eating, I get terrible cramps in my side. So, ideally, I would like to be able to eat some yogurt with my 16 ounces of water and vitamins. Is that ok? I'm very good about observing the waiting period between eating and drinking, but because yogurt is considered a "full" liquid, do the same rules apply?

Im wondering if my stomach is supposed to hurt when I eat and drink 8 days out. Liquids and creamy strained soup and yogurt help -
Only good carbs. I don't eat anything white either. No rice, pasta, potatoes or bread. When I was told to add carbs I added oats with a teaspoon of honey. (The only sweetener I am allowed is honey or agave nectar). I can get carbs from Greek yogurt and a few steamed veggies. I also haven't added fruit back.

10 DAYS OUT, THINGS GOING TOO GOOD?
skinnydawg73 replied to skinnydawg73's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Thanks sarahbee. That's what I was kind of figuring. I just didn't want to be one of those people who feel little restriction. I just ate a 5 oz yogurt and a 3 oz sugar free pudding. I feel pretty stuffed now. I'm now finding out how important it is to eat slow even if I could eat it fast because it does take a little bit to feel full at least in my case. -

I'm on the full liquid post -OP as of yesterday I was told basically What I was eating on clear liquid Plus Yogurt, Greek or fat free...no fruit in it pudding, but to make sure it was watery Pourable consistency cream of wheat (gross) Skim or 1% milk Puréed Soups Creamy soups, make sure any chunks are strained out I tried to eat a yogurt, a 100 calorie one, and couldn't even finish half I found some soups that aren't bad...found some potato lentil soup that I added unjury Protein powder to. But I couldn't imagine trying to eat something like chf boyardee right now I am pretty much sticking with various Protein shakes right now, with a soup....I can't get the protein or calories I need from the yogurts or such -
I'm 10 days out, still in the full liquids stage, but I can drink a 32 ounce Powerade in about 20 minutes. I can knock down a 10 ounce Greek yogurt in 5 minutes, with no trouble at all. All this talk on these forums about people struggling to even drink a protein shake, and I could almost chug mine. I'm a little worried, that the surgeon made my pouch too big? Or should I just shut up and be happy about it? I'm not having problems with hunger and I am content on the 5 to 700 calories I'm eating a day. I'm averaging 80 to 90 grams of protein a day.

Stevehud replied to scarletwitch19's topic in Food and Nutrition
Thanks SMYE, i agree most definitely in what you say My Nut and I work together on my low carb diet. i do take in carbs, its almost impossible not to , as you stated very well. I try to keep my carbs to natural carbs, and as much as i want bread, my sleeve doesn't like bread. We need some carbs to be turned into sugars for brain function. that old glucose in the brain thing, is a truth. Brain chemistry requires glucose, not in high amounts, but its needs to use those sugars in the metabolic processes in order to help absorb Proteins. I know how stunned i was was i once picked up a 100 calories Dannon yogurt and found 100 calories, sure but 16 grams of sugar, but that is 4 teaspoonfuls. That's just not right. lol I get between 5 and 7 sugars a day in vegetable form and almost always at dinner. and about 10 to 15 grams of carbs. I try to equal out my carbs with vegetable Fiber, and that helps. Hey, one of my favorite mini meals is broccoli roasted or pan seared with a little onion or onion salt, garlic, and ground sage and a little olive oil. So I'm gonna get carbs there and some sugars, but the good ones. I went from drinking 2 to 3 gallons of milk a week, ( 2%) that i can see milk sugars and milk fats being a big player in my weight issues. So I avoid Lactose and milk fats when I can. And my doctor and Nut require liver function tests regularly, and my numbers are very good. As we all regularly state to each his own, every Journey is separate. Sugars cause me to slow down my weight loss to a crawl, when I Hit a level I want to maintain at, I have a plan ready to reintroduce more carbs and natural sugars back into my diet, but for now I'm 8 7 and half months post op and I'm using this "honeymoon" time for all I can. This isnt doable by everyone, but for me it works. -
Do you eat Yogurt? What brand? What sort of toppings do you add to it?
Smye replied to scarletwitch19's topic in Food and Nutrition
Another quick comment - many of those dannon and yoplait products aren't actually fermented milk (yogurt), but are thickened soured milk with xanthan gum and other thickeners. I'm not saying don't eat them, just be aware that you may not be getting the probiotic cultures you assume. Nothing pisses me off more than large food companies (yoplait, for example) marketing things like GoGurt to kids and assuring mom that it's "yogurt" so it's good for your kid. Then you actually read the label and voila - just skim milk and corn syrup with some fillers, no yogurt whatsoever. That's much of the reason we have an obesity swell in our country, not the damn lactose in real yogurt. Thanks for reading my rant - my apologies if any of you work for yoplait/dannon/etc. Most big food does this - even whole f-ing foods. I trusted you guys! -

Smye replied to scarletwitch19's topic in Food and Nutrition
@@Stevehud, you're dead on that we need to be careful with sucrose (and all sugars in significant doses). But do keep in mind that in order for your liver to be able to process all that Protein successfully, you do need some amount of carbohydrates. Anything under 100g is considered 'low carb' and under 50 is 'very low carb.' Staying under 15 is 'dangerous.' I keep mine at about 40g after working with my NUT to figure out how many I need to stay healthy based on RMR, VO2 and a few other metrics. Just be careful and make sure you're working with a NUT to determine your 'low carb' goal rather than taking a 'lower is better' approach. There's a reason folks on the Atkins Diet tend towards liver failure young (see The Lancet, May 2014, I think). There's also the fact that all carbohydrates (except some fibers like cellulose) - especially the starches found in things like zucchini (great for us), cauliflower (central to caulibread), heck, even lettuce are broken down by the amylase in our mouths as we chew into, what else, sugar! So although these foods are 'sugar free,' by the time they exit our pouch and start being absorbed, many are just as sugary as unsweetened yogurt (and actually higher in sucrose [white table sugar], believe it or not). And all of that sugar is produced through an enzyme action, not any sort of "i have to digest it so it cancels out' sort of mechanism (unlike the sugar that our bodies convert even steak into so we can use it for energy - THAT is a deep metabolic mechanism that absolutely cancels out the sugar I don't say this to say 'don't eat zukes - they're secret sugar' (in fact, eat them a lot!), just to say that - Yes, we need to be careful to monitor and keep our carbs low. And yes, sugar is one to be particularly careful of. But when we demonize any food (except trans fats, those things are straight-up Satan molecules:) we run the risk of actually harming ourselves and/or missing out on a fully nutrative diet. All that aside, if your NUT says I'm a nut, do what your NUT says. I am neither a doctor or a nurse, just a well-educated former med student, chemist, and concerned bari-citizen who doesn't want to see anyone's liver go. It's a hell of a way to die. -
How did you know?
Hipigrl replied to Soon2beslimSamantha's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I have been "heavy" my entire life, but I started getting morbidly obese about 15 yeas ago after a back injury. I had two back surgeries, first one 8/2007, second one in 11/2009. I also broke my left ankle (for the 5th time) in 10/2010. After a major foot surgery in 3/2011, I decided to go for the sleeve. About a month out from surgery, I got pregnant and abandoned my WLS plans for the time being. I had the baby (best thing ever!!) and got back on track for surgery in October of 2013. I then caught the NORO virus from my kid and spend two days sitting on the toilet and vomiting into the waste basket. That freaked me out so much that I backed off from the surgery. My back and foot pain was getting worse (one of the five screws in my foot/ankle had broken and wow, the pain has been intense!) and all the doctors were telling me it would never get better until I lost about 100 lbs. at least. At the time, I was about 330. The doctor for my foot told me that he would have to take out all the pins, put in thicker ones, and reinforce the area with steal plates. This did not sound like it was going to help get me out of pain. So, back to the bariatric surgeon. I started with this again in February of 2015. My doc put me on a diet pill to help with appetite suppression, and I lost almost 50 lbs. from March 2015 - June 2015. It took a while to get all of the insurance requirements met, but it was finally approved, and my surgery was on July1. I am 23 days out of surgery, just started my 4th week post-op, and while it has not been easy, I would not go back. I had the sleeve because I did not want to have as many issues with malnutrition as I have heard can happen with bypass. I know that I will eventually get to eat real food again, just not nearly as much, and I am so happy with the weight loss. The biggest issue I am having is getting my Protein. I am a vegetarian and the idea of drinking milk repulses me. I am not a vegan, will eat cheese and yogurt, it is just milk that grosses me out. Soy milk was not something I wanted to try, but I find the light vanilla and light chocolate is palatable. I am still experimenting with different protein supplements, but I feel confident I will eventually find one that I can get down. I have found a few suggestion on this forum that give me hope. :-) I hope this info has helped. Good luck! -
Googled it and this is what their website says: Do I have to be on a liquid diet at any point? As with all surgeries you will be required to be on a clear liquid diet the day before surgery. After surgery for seven to ten days your meal plan will include such items as protein drinks, milk, yogurt, pudding and cream soups. Then you will gradually progress to solids.
