    Finally!

I had mine done 5/7 my doc progressed've 12 days later. Truth be told i'm still mostly on liquids, I have slowly added in fish, yogurts and cheese mostly really soft foods. I myself am still looking for some alternatives. Still need to get more proteins & liquids but i'm working on that

I have see. recipes I. Which the cottage cheese was blended till smooth then added. If it's the texture, that would work. If it's the tang of yogurt, try it where you would use sour cream. Lynda
  3. Not eating can definitely make acid worse. Your body is tuned to start secreting acid at the mere thought of food, to prepare for digestion of a meal. If your body is hungry, the acid will soon follow! I rarely had acid issues pre-op, and started having them post-op. I made a few changes to help that: I ate ever 2 to 3 hours, had small meals, chewed my food to a mushy pulp, and ate slowly with small bites. I also tried to initially avoid the acidic trigger foods like spices or tomatoes. Eating Protein will give the acid something to work on, since carbs break down and flush out of your stomach right away. Try cottage cheese, or greek yogurt, if you are still on mushies. If you are on solids, try some eggs or Beans. (I'm vegetarian, so I have no experience with meat)

    Protein from Food.

If you don't like the milky shakes, try isopure zero carb. They taste like fruit juice and have forty grams of protein per bottle, no carbs, no sugar and no fat. I don't care for the thick shakes either, except the premier protein cafe latte flavor. It tastes like a starbucks latte but has 30 grams of protein. I live on those, beef, shrimp, cottage cheese, greek yogurt, cheese and eggs pretty much. Surgery was 12/18 and I am down 80 lbs
  5. Ok, I've finally found the way for me to take my crushed meds without the bitter taste, in fact with no taste at all. I crush my meds first, take a creamy greek yogurt, I stir my yogurt up and scrape off any on the bottom of the spoon on the side of the cup, I have a little left on top (not heeping over side of teaspoon), with another spoon I make a little well in that yogurt and pour the crushed meds in that, then cover with yogurt using the other spoon, then just gulp it like a yogurt capsule. Goes down very easy and best of all no bitter taste.
  6. I had my surgery on the 15th of this month. I was put on a liquid diet upon discharge. I've been home and have been able to finish my Premier Protein shakes yogurts, cream soups and amout of water I was told to drink. I feel like I'm eating as much as I was during my 2 week pre-op liquid diet. I never feel full or sick. No pain or discomfort. Is this normal. Besides the brusing on my stomach I feel like nothing has changed.

New here and need some advice!!

Read your own instructions and follow but here were mine. Thicker liquid (week 2) foods were protein shakes, low sodium cream of chicken, cream of mushroom soups, light yogurt, tomato soups, plus foods from week 1 such as broth. SF jello, koolaid, crystal light, juices diluted and SF, 2 quarts of water daily.
  8. So I started my antibiotics for the H-Pylori today and there's 3 different pills I have to take twice daily. The pharmacist said that I need to eat something the equivelant to 3 slices of bread with my pills or else they won't be absorbed and I will throw up. I ate a granola bar and some greek yogurt and still felt a little queasy. So I ate a peice of french bread. I was doing so well on my diet and losing weight before surgery and I feel like now I don't know what to do. Does anybody have any ideas or has anyone been through this? :/

    Yogurt

I am Day 5 and my plan says I can add Greek yogurt today, but I was scared because the full liquids plan says to only have liquids that pour off a spoon and Greek yogurt does not. So I just had 1 oz., and took 20 minutes of baby kitten licks to finish it. So far I feel ok, it went down smoother than some other things. I'm frustrated by conflicting information!
  10. A few years after surgery, my blood workup showed that I needed more iron. My nutritionist directed me to take it in the form of ferrous sulfate for the best absorption. A year later, my next blood work showed that I had too much iron, so they said I could cut back on the iron. I took my iron supplement just before bedtime because I wanted to make very sure I was giving it a 2 hour separation between when I took in any form of calcium, not just the supplements (such as calcium from milk, butter, yogurt or other dairy).

    Purée ideas

I couldn't stand the texture of puréed foods, so I moved right to soft foods, with my nutritionist's permission. Started out with soft scrambled eggs, cottage cheese and cream Soups. Plus, I had stews, cooked to a mush, then further mushed with a spoon. sugar-free puddings and applesauce are mainstays (still). As are mashed potatoes with really moist chicken (Boston Market is good for this). I didn't really like yogurt either, but Greek yogurt has so much Protein that I wanted to make it work. I don't eat sugar, so I find the prepared yogurts obnoxious. I take plain, 0% Greek yogurt, mix in a tbl of sugar-free blueberry preserves, and Splenda and convince myself it's blueberry ice cream. Good luck!

    Purée ideas

I started the purée stage of my diet today....everything I tried was disgusting. Anyone have some good meal ideas? Unfortunately I don't like yogurt so that's out.

pureed foods make me gag. its a texture thing. except for Soup. so i figure, i'm gonna make a lot of pureed soups! one thing i do love is roasted and grilled veggies. figure they can be made into a dip type thing with olive oil. my sheet says soft fish, so i'm gonna try that, cause we do like fish around here! figure i'll cook it in little parchment packets and mash mine a bit with a fork. refried Beans come to mind too. i'll have to make mine myself though, since gas is an issue for me. refried beans, little diced veggies on top with greek yogurt and tiny bit o cheese. i like cottage cheese all different ways, sweet, savory... blame my mom, beng gluten free in the 60-70s was not easy! when i was nursing, i made a supercharged rice pudding with no added sugar. it was mochi (short grain) brown rice, milk and eggs. you can make this with any kind of milk beverage you like. i wonder if that would work, though i know some people dont eat carbs... my nut sheets say 1-3 whole grain products a day.

    Lunch With a Friend

So I call up a friend from work and we agree to meet at a diner for lunch-it's around 1pm and all I have had so far was yogurt in the morning. I am hungry-I really want to eat and I feel as though I could eat (unlike mornings). Anyway this friend knows I have the band...I order a garden veggie egg beater omellet, fruit cup (instead of home fires) and no toast. Well, I could barely get 4 bites down. I had to ask for a to-go box and I ate 2-3 small pieces of fruit. I guess that wasn't a good choice for me. I am thinking eggs over light might go down better-geeze! Tonight we are going out for my daughter's birthday-I was going to do Hibachi -but no way can I do that and not stand out. Only thing I can eat is seafood and at night I can mange more.

    May 18th surgery date

I am scheduled for surgery on May 19th and I am starting a mandatory pre op diet on May 19th. Mostly liquid, with protien shakes and some soft foods like cottage cheese, yogurt and low fat Soups. Good luck!

    Why is today so tough?!?

I too am almost one week through, but mines a three week liquid, so two more weeks to go. I had a real bad day yesterday. Stomach cramped and burned all day. I really drank up the broth and had a Oikos triple zero yogurt which is thick and filling. The warmth from the broth and the thick yogurt really helped. Like Dale said above. Just get through today. Today has been pretty easy so far. My biggest challenge has been having to cook dinner and not get to eat. I planned menus my kids can make (their 14 - 21) , so i don't have to be in the kitchen much and plan crock pot meals I don't have to worry about either so much. this helps a lot. Out of site, out of mind... keep busy and the time will fly. Blessing on your journey.

    Pittsburgh Banders

Hi Band_Groupie, Thanks for answering my post so soon. They just added milk, yogurt and cr soups thiking it would be better to have a little more in there because of all the crushed up meds. After the first couple of days I did start staggering my meds & not taking the ones that I felt like you, were not that important right now. I am doing better with the water and I really need to because it seems in the am I have so much gas and really loose bm's with a lot of water loss. By afternoon that quiets down. Even with my pain med Roxicet I only sleep until 4-4:30 then I get up & come out to the livingroon and get on the couch with my water bottle. My chest bothers me and I think that maybe I need the water for the band as it feels like it is dry down there. It is so funny the different feelings we have with our bands. My is a Realize Band. I am excited and so looking forward to healing and adding more foods. We had been talking about taking a trip to Fl towards the end of October but I am not sure if that is a good idea or not. Well I am off to get my pj's on so will write more another day....Young AT Heart

    Confused, upset

protein, protein, protein and water, water, water Protein is whats goingmto keep you from chewing off your arm. Greek yogurt, creamed soups with greek yogurt added in(boost the protein). My fave was tomato with yogurt. Low fat ricotta cheese, cottage cheese and eggs are good in the protein dept. Really hungry, have a cup of hot decaf tea,my fave is Chai and diet hot chocolate a good go to. Right now it is mind over matter. You gotta make up your mind that you really want this and you're willing to suffer through the hunger. Do things to keep busy and your head busy. Clean closets, drawers, cabinets, whatever it takes to not sit around thinking of food. BTW. I'm 6 1/2 mths out and can still eat anything I want, just smaller portions, smaller bites and chewing it to mush. You can do this! Tell your mind to shut the hell up.lol
  19. I found this article to be interesting. I have been at the same weight for about a month now and this gave me a little insight on the Protein vs. carb issue. Hope others find it useful as well. Eat Your Way Slim SELF.com By Lucy Danziger, SELF Editor-in-Chief - Posted on Tue, Jan 27, 2009, 1:08 pm PST Grab your fork: Filling up on healthy foods is the best way to say sayonara to those stubborn 5, 10 or 15 pounds. A few years ago, when I complained about the extra luggage I was carrying, a trainer told me, "That's between you and the bread basket." And she was right. I went on to lose about 25 pounds without counting calories or cutting meals, but rather by reducing refined carbs such as Pasta and bagels and increasing the amount of fruit, veggies and lean protein on my plate. Science helps me understand why: Studies suggest that we absorb 6 percent fewer calories when we follow a diet with at least 34 grams a day of Fiber (which is chockablock in produce). We also know our bodies expend more energy digesting protein than fat or carbs, and eating at least 50 grams of protein a day can delay hunger pains and boost energy. Try these other tips from our Jump Start Diet to whittle your middle and achieve the healthiest weight for you. Ruin your appetite: If you only eat three squares a day, you might be getting too hungry between meals, causing you to overeat when you finally sit down to dine. Treat yourself to two 150-calorie Snacks a day to keep your blood sugar stable and rein in hunger. Try a string cheese with an apple or lowfat yogurt and fruit. Supersize your eats: Sometimes bigger really is better. Selecting a high-volume version of the food you want can help you eat less. People who had cheese puffs for a snack ate 21 percent fewer calories than those given denser bites, researchers at Penn State University at University Park found. Because the food looks bigger, you’re happy and satisfied with fewer calories. Try rice cakes, popcorn or puffed Cereal instead of chips when you want a snack. SELF has more ways to trade up to healthier treats. Don't fear frozen meals: Eating an entree out of your freezer isn't something you want to make a daily habit, but once in a while it can be a smart way to refresh your memory on sensible serving sizes. Choose ones with about 350 calories, at least 3 grams of protein, 1.5 grams of fiber and no more than 1.5 grams of saturated fat per 100 calories. Put it on a plate and snap a mental picture of it before digging in. This will help sidestep portion distortion in the future. Plot your path: When you map out your meals for the day, you’re less likely to stumble on diet setbacks such as unhealthy takeout or king-size treats from the vending machine. Take a moment to jot down what you plan to nosh for the next few days, and check back to see how you did. This will help you pinpoint trouble spots (such as a few unplanned scoops of ice cream in front of the tube) and allow you to Celebrate when you help yourself to healthier fare. Sleeved 7/31 whats everyone eating?

I'm 5 1/2 weeks out and on soft foods (after a long 4 weeks of liquids). I eat alot of chili, mashed potatoes, eggs, oatmeal, yogurt, turkey deli meat, and cottage cheese. I'm also bored. I want a big (make that little!) juicy steak, a salad, grilled chicken, and bread. I know, I don't want much, right? LOL You're doing great. I've lost 17 lbs, gaining and losing the same 1 lb over the past week. I started at 174 on july 16th so I know it'll come off lsower than say someone who started at 250 (which was my orginial weight when banded 4 yrs ago). I had the same dr also. 3 hrs away. Thats sucks but I really luv my dr so it's fine. The dr in my town doesn't take my insurance (Medicare, they only cover Centers of Excellence). Good luck to you. Expand ur eating so ur not so bored. I luv me some chili with a little melted sharp cheddar on top! Dip some melba toast in it...yummo
  21. I was on a pre-op diet for two weeks, but it wasn't a liquid diet. I had two protein shakes, one fruit, one yogurt, 4 oz lean meat (turkey, chicken, etc), 2 slices light whole wheat bread, unlimited non-starchy veggies per day - (abbreviated version). It seems there are as many diets to no diet as there are doctors. I know it will be hard to handle a liquid diet while you're traveling for business. Best wishes to you.
  22. My sleeve was June 13th and I've had no real issues or problems, thankfully. But since Sunday morning I am struggling with getting my fluids in much worse than ever since my procedure. Every time I swallow it feels really weird in my throat like I've gulped a HUGE amount when I haven't and food made me nauseated when I would start eating. The nausea is better, but any swallowing (even little chunks of greek yogurt popsicle) is followed by that weird golf ball feeling in my throat/chest. Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? Hot vs. cold beverages feel the same. About the only food that doesn't feel awful is scrambled eggs. This all began Sunday morning and Saturday night I ate grapes for the first time at a party. I also drank some alcohol. Just trying to put it all out there to help figure out what this could be caused by... Can a stricture happen at this point? Could I have gotten a grape stuck in my sleeve? Starting to worry!
  23. This depends on the Dr. I also thought that it was necessary but discovered that is not true. When I had my hysterectomy last year my Dr did not require that I get an unfill. The only issue that I has was that the hospitals idea of a light diet did not tie up with what I considered to be a suitable lapbanders light diet. they kept trying to feed me sandwiches so all I got to eat was the soft stuff like icecream, jelly ,custard and yogurt which was not very satisfying.

    Buy Hyacinths

After an appointment today I stopped at Trader Joe's to pick up groceries. One of the miracles of my surgery is that I can now do my own shopping. I had gotten so immobile pre-op that I had to have someone else buy my groceries. Trader Joe's is so smart. They put their flowers and plants right by the front door. I bought with abandon: cut tulips, cut iris, a succulent, and a pot of hyacinths. It occurred to me that pre-op, most of my cart would have been full of pre-packaged foods and starches. Today, it was full of flowers, fresh berries, yogurt, and other healthy, fresh whole foods. One of my favorite poems: How do you feed your soul at the grocery store?
