Confused With Post Op Diet
StevieSmithtown replied to urbandecayno5's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Two days after surgery the hospital started me on puréed foods. I was told to stay on puréed diet until my first post op appointment mid-May. I couldn't get anything down the first few days but now i eat lentil and / or black bean soups everyday, yogurt, cream of wheat and protein shakes all day. I take in over 100 g of protein each day but I am concerned that I'm doing too much too soon. -
For my post op liquid diet I can only have milk, yogurts, protein drinks, and broth. Its a very boring diet. Im starting to hate protein drinks.

I've been having 1-2 oz grilled salmon every few days and it is delic. Very small bites and chew it up to mush. Awesome. Also sounds Grose but sometimes I mix in blueberry Greek yogurt with the salmon and it is so good!!!!! The salmon alone is very high in protein but add the greek yogurt in and bam! A good 20-25 gr protein. Baby bel cheese is delic too.

Everyone on this site can relate! It's the hardest part of the process. My doctor allowed pureed soups, low fat yogurt, sugar free ice pops, fruit smoothies and sugar free jello. Good luck!

I was able to have all of the above, plus yogurt, sugar free pudding and cream of wheat. -
If you have a Kroger or Fred Meyer near you, I would suggest trying some of the CarbMaster Yogurt. It's a great source of protein/low carbs and very filling (if you add 1/2 scoop of unflavored Protein powder, you get even more protein and no change in taste). This is hard time, but follow your instructions. They were written to help you heal and maximize your weightloss. As noted above refried Beans were AWESOME when I got to the puree stage. Also, try pureed chili and Campbell's Beef Vegetable - they are higher in carbs, but the little you eat shouldn't be a problem. They have a lot of flavor and can satisfy that need to "eat" real food. Best of luck!

3 weeks Post~Op Body Rejecting Protein Drinks
summerseeker replied to Chel1's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Have your team ruled out a stricture ? Any time that liquids are being vomited back up, alarm bells should ring. It is a easy fix I believe. Lots of us have issues with nausea and not wanting to eat foods and drinks that were our go to ones before surgery. I didn't do Protein drinks but have read on here that there are ones with sugar substitutes that really give people problems. My husband is diabetic so we have lots of sugar substitutes and every one of them make me vomit. I use real sugars if I need any. Lots of us find we are intolerant of dairy, nuts etc. Our new stomachs are really fussy. I also had a filthy taste in my mouth from the ketones for months. I still take Lansoprazole 30mg twice a day and when I need it Gaviscon I could not face the puree stage, just thinking about the texture made me heave so I missed that stage all together and stayed on homemade soups, yogurts, cream cheese, pate until I could go on to foods that were squashed with a fork. One tip that I was given was to have my drinks warm. My stomach accepted them better. I never drink plain water, I have never liked it. I add a little fruit juice or add Bovril or Oxo stock cubes. -
I am almost 3 months out. My doctor has a food plan of introducing all proteins at 4 weeks, start vegetables at 2 months, potatoes (all varieties) at 4 months, fruits at 6 months and all foods at 1 year. The nutritionist said try some fruits at 2 months as they may be easier to digest vs vegetables however be aware of carbs/sugars etc. A lot of others post here about potatoes and oatmeal a few weeks after surgery. So far all is well but I feel like I am not getting natural vitamin sources with such a limited diet. I do take calcium and bariatric multivitamin. I'm in a rut and stick to a premier shake, yogurt, some meat (protein, tuna, egg) and some limited vegetables like carrots, cauliflower, and broccoli. Is anyone else trying chia seeds? ground flax? fruits this early post op? I asked about nuts and the nutritionist said to try it slowly. When I look at Keto recipes they have a lot of foods I have not tried yet. I am feeling a little overwhelmed so I just stick with my basic foods. I have lost an average of 3 pounds per week form month 2-3 on 600 calories and started at a BMI of 35 so I think I may be losing too fast (I never thought that would be a concern). Any tips?

After you....get things moving.....for maintenance, what I do is have a 1/4 to 1/2 cup of fiber one mixed into my low carb yogurt every morning. That kind of counteracts the high protein aspect of my diet. (But only after you're cleared to eat something that solid. It mushes up pretty good once it sits in the yogurt for a while...) I use Fiber One because it has the highest fiber with the lowest carbs and calories.

How did the transition to maintenance look for you?
maintenanceman replied to Lisa XO's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My weight loss progressively slowed down each month post-op. Over time, I needed more calories to be satiated. Finally, at 9 months post-op, the weight loss stopped right at my Ideal Body Weight. I'm currently 14 mo post-op, and I'm still experimenting with how much and what to eat to maintain. I currently eat about 1800-2000 calories a day. I don't follow a specific diet now, but I try to stay focused on protein, eating clean, limited (and healthy) snacking. My biggest challenge is grazing. My restriction makes it hard to eat actual meals, so I find myself eating "pieces" of food throughout the day... some cheese here, an apple there, a piece of ham, some greek yogurt, a protein bar, etc. It's working ok for now, but it's something I'm monitoring. Initially, I was tracking everything I ate, but I don't do that now. I keep a running tab in my head, and I'm trying to get to the point that I can regulate intuitively. I weigh myself every morning. I've regained about a pound from my lowest weight. -
Am I the only one that is driven nuts by the contraindications in what we are suppose to do. How are sugar free drinks any different from sugar free jello, pudding, popsicles, yogurt ect. Artifical sweetners are artificial sweetners, how does it matter in which form they come in. I do not drink them all day long and I try and keep my water up. I drink a galon of liquids a day. I have one packet a day and it is only for 20 0z but I fill my nalgreen bottle all the way. Just my tirade for the day.

Jody, Vinesqueen is right you know. We are all like vanilla yogurt in the beginning and through each experience or trial that we have endured and learned from, we become more flavorful. I choose to think of life experiences like that. So the more we have, well you know, the more colorful and flavorful we are - we are not just plain ol' boring vanilla yogurt:banana

Food/Supplement Questions for Post Surgery
SuperDave replied to ErinEllen1's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
My 2 week post op diet basically consisted of 4 things. Cream of Wheat for Breakfast. sugar free Jello for lunch. Greek yogurt for dinner. Premier Protein shakes in between meals. I was only eating 1-1.5 ounces of anything per meal. I was lucky to drink any more than 1 Protein shake (30 grams of protein) per day for the first week. I sipped on Water constantly, but was only getting in about 40 ounces a day for at least a week. I just wasn't hungry and nothing really sounded good, but my nutritionist said it was important to eat something and try to get my protein and fluids in, so that it what I did. For Vitamins I use TwinLab Bariatric chewable vitamins and TwinLab Bariatric Chewable Calcium. They aren't the greatest tasting things in the world, but they aren't terrible either. I get them both on either Amazon or from Swanson Vitamins, depending on availability when I need them. They seem to be frequently out of stock on both sites. I think the important thing to remember the first 2 weeks is that it will probably be a struggle to get in your fluids and protein, but it does get easier. Just do what you can do and don't worry about it too much! -
Am I the only one that doesnt miss food/eating?
barbmeow replied to gamergirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The cravings are not like they used to be. I wanted Movie popcorn, I ate 1 cup and did not want any more, where before I would eat an extra large by myself. I also found it not as satifsying as I used to find the taste. I want frozen yogurt and have made a deal with myself that at 50 pound loss I can have some frozen yogurt. Now I have to share with you all that my portion size used to be around $9 that is at 45 cents per ounze. A lot of frozen yogurt, no toppings. I am thinking a small amount will satisfy my craving for the frozen stuff,Maybe 6oz. I hope it will not be a trigger food that will try and spin me out of my diet orbit, but like the popcorn I hope it will be something I eat and think nice, but not as good as losing weight. -

Hi folks, I just recived a response from TLBC and they have confirmed that the post op diet does include Jello (sugar free).:clap2: they did re-state the importance of the yogurt and cottage cheese the the function of the bactia culture. these are the most important. i think i'll save the Jello for a time when i really need a different taste.:hungry: day 4 of pre-op - down 8 lbs. survived relatives cooking supper (oh the smells) - diddn't seem to have any pangs or overwhelming desires. yippee.

I'd take a break and test it out again if I were you. I'm not sure but I think if you were lactose intolerant post-surgery, it would show up right away not 25 days later. I can't drink milk or have unfermented milk products since surgery. I had a problem with the first glass of skim milk and the first serving of cottage cheese I had. If it is indeed lactose-intolerance, you may be able to tolerate yogurt and hard cheeses no problem - I can. At the beginning, I used unjury Protein powder, which is Whey Isolate. I can now use Gold Standard Whey Protein, which is a blend. Lynda

Watching the food network channel before the band used to be a major reason why I ate all the time. I just had to eat what I saw them eating. Whether it was bbq, fried chicken, pasta, cup cakes, Whatever I saw I could simply go down to any of the 15 fast food restaurants that I can tell you right off the top of my head. In my area. And over indulge. There is something in me that wants to eat when other people are. But now that I have the band I'm 3 weeks post-op. and have reached a mile stone. About 2 weeks ago I watched the FNC. And nothing for the first time in my life my hunger button has been flipped off. I don't crave anything anymore I see on that channel and I really don't want to watch it. Here are some tips that might help you when they're eating Italian, drink a v8, Mexican, refried beans w/ ground taco meat, when desserts, vanilla yogurt w/ purreed fruit and whatever the theme just create something healthy in Its place. Hope that helps Good Luck. -

lisacaron replied to jennybean's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yougurt is a slider food even though it's good for you it passes right through the band without much effort. There is nothing to chew. The best thing to do is add something to yogurt like fruit berries or some high protien Cereal. Like to add Kashi go lean crunch to it. This way your getting all the benefits of the yougurt and Protein and not letting it slide right through where you are hungry again too soon. Best of luck to you!
