How much weight have you lost
TX Patty replied to PrettyMe's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
10 weeks and 60lbs. But I had an endoscopy today because I'm still not tolerating solids and they found that the hole leading out of my pouch was smaller than a pea. So I've been starving. -
Psych evaluation in the morning
lynette85 replied to mentalistfan's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My eval was pretty basic I answered about 1000+ questions about depression, suicide, healthy eating, support and addiction. Then I talked to the Dr. For about 10 mins he asked my highest weight, where my husband worked, if I knew I would look and feel different after the surgery and that's about it. Good luck everyone -
I read through the whole article and found the research on the band to be kinda vague compared to the sleeve and bypass. Seems like they are making assumptions due to lack of specific research on the band. From my limited experience... I can say my cravings and tastes have definitely changed with the band. I am still able to eat meats and raw vegetables with a 5cc fill. I find myself wanting healthy food as opposed to junk. I have more energy than before. Perhaps I am an exception with this experience? I've read studies where the weight loss with the band matches the sleeve and bypass patients long term...meaning it takes band patients a little longer to lose, but in the end we all end up at similar goals. A lot of these studies only look a year out. I honestly think it is an individual preference...one surgery might be better than another depending on the person. Hoping more long term studies are done to help people with their decisions on all forms of surgery. I found it all confusing and contradictory when I was researching my options. Bands have been redesigned, techniques on all the surgeries have improved. So I went with my gut...no pun intended...and so far, I feel I made the right decision. I also think the surgeon, and support system afterwards make a big difference, as well a person's attitude going in. It's surprising they can't analyze more human subjects and have to resort to rats...I mean, how many people have had surgery in the past 10 years? I'd be willing to answer questions about my diet, carvings, etc...give blood samples, or what ever else, if it would help them understand how to best tackle obesity. I kinda feel we are all guinea pigs right now, anyway.

Hi, I'm post op a little over 2 weeks. Before surgery. I had lived with my SO for 5 years. we had good and bad times. For the past 2 weeks while recovering, i stayed with my parents. And surprisingly, I really enjoyed it. The issue now is, what should I do? My relationship has been so painful for me and he tends to not treat me well. I know I should leave. I should have left years ago. My issue is: what do I say? I'm 23,I haven't lived at home since I was 19. I find that though I just came back to my SOs house, I am constantly thinking about my family. The environment was better for me there than it is here. Any advice? I promised myself that I would change my life around when I got my sleeve. And my feelings for my SO have changed so much. Thanks.

Sleeved 9/19 How are you feeling?
Spectra13 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I feel like I've been hit with a Mac truck. Surgery was Monday the 19th and it is now Friday. I am in pain in my stomach and back. Walking like a 100 year old hunchback. I am only on Clear liquids. So hard to get all my Water in. I am getting two bottles and supposed to be 4. No Protein but I had some powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury chicken Soup today and I felt better than I had, I think because I am actually having protein. I have had my stomach binder on but it was causing me so much back pain I took it off. Still get up and move super gingerly and I'm slow motion. Last night was the first time I slept in the bed, but had to get up every hour to pee and painfully switch sides,as well as sip water. Still have not pooped. I took a stool softener pill tonight and still nothing. In the past things like ducolax pills cause me extreme stomach pain, so I didn't want to take a pill but I am getting worried and want to poop before it starts hurting me. I don't feel like I have to but I am aware I haven't. Trying not to be negative, I know it will get better, but right now I'm not happy. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Sleeved 9/19 How are you feeling?
Sam S. replied to Spectra13's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello. Fellow 9/19 sleever here. All-in-all it seems like I've had a pretty non-eventful recovery. Day +1 in the hospital was tough to get in all the liquid the dr. wanted (about 10oz). But every day I've been feeling better by leaps and bounds. Came home on Tuesday (9/20) evening. Pain & discomfort are completely manageable. Haven't had the need to use any of the prescribed pain meds since I've been home. I did use liquid tylenol on a couple of occasions, but I think the last was on thursday. Only real discomfort now (and it's pretty minor) is at the main incision site when I get out of bed. The incision sites seem like they're healing up, because they're starting to itch like crazy. I work mostly from home, and for the past couple of days I have been able to spend as much time as I need to at my desk without feeling uncomfortable. Only issue on that front is the energy level. I've taken more naps in the last week than I have since my kids were babies. Up to about 48 oz of Water a day, and able to do 3 Protein shakes plus a couple of other smooth/liquid meals (soup, pudding, yogurt) per day. Walking around fine, and the energy level is finally starting to increase. I feel like I'm ready for soft foods, but I'm not doing anything until my Dr. tells me to at my follow up visit on 9/29. sleeping was a little tough at first, but now seems pretty good. And last night I was able to actually sleep on my side for a while (I'm a big side sleeper). Had some issues with gas early on, but found that the Gas-X strips do a great job managing that quickly. First poop was on Friday, 9/23, and I've been pretty regular since. Biggest challenges now are getting the liquid and protein in and increasing the amount that I'm walking. The liquid diet is getting a little boring, but I'm hopeful that I'll get the thumbs up on Thursday and I can go until then with no problem. HW 348, SW 321, CW 312. -
Sleeved 9/19 How are you feeling?
christinah replied to Spectra13's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved 9/19 as well! It only gets better. I definitely think the Protein helps me without me even realizing it. I do try to get up and not let my body get stiff and walk but it can be hard. As for the Water just do your best. It is hard but you'll increase over time so it'll be fine. I also haven't pooped either. My doctor told me to add miralax to my Protein shakes, so we'll see how that goes. However I'm not too worried about pooping. Especially since I've barely eaten! Cannot tolerate protein drinks or powder !
Winnie2 replied to LaineyD's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have the same issue. Pre OP, I was told to try different brands of protein shakes to make sure I find a brand/flavor I like especially since I'll be stuck drinking it. Well now, I can't stand any of the flavors I got. My favorite sweets are anything chocolate, and now I hate them. You are lucky your doctor's program has a puree stage. My program is 28 days post-op of full liquids and starting slow but I'll be able to eat normally again minus raw vegetables of course for I believe another month. Only 10 more days to go! Lol As for feeling full, I am now able to drink more water than a week ago. Instead of sips, I can drink more. When eating/drinking my soups. I eat until I feel a little pain ( only 2-4 spoon full ) and I know I'm full. Remember with a new tummy you have to now basically train yourself to know you are full. I would take a spoonful and maybe wait a min until the next intake. Congrats btw on this new journey!!! -
Risk of Suicide Attempts after WLS article
OKCPirate replied to gowalking's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
@@gowalking - Thanks for pointing out this article. This actually tics me off. It stigmatizes all of us. But what they are pointing out the same results that happen to those few who win the lottery. They have problems too: http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2010/02/19/lotto-death-curse.html. Sudden good fortune is a blessing or a curse. It depends. And when I look at the whinny videos of people who have had WLS but eat crap and then bemoan their magic wand didn't work it really makes me mad. Well that's not completely true, I feel for them. But when people who self soothed through food are suddenly cut off of their only source of pleasure, what do you think is going to happen? You don't think anyone can see that? The morbidly obese are killing themselves. They don't have the coping skills, no support network what do you think is going to happen? But bunching me and the vast majority in that group with the crap stat "twice as likely to commit suicide" which is what everyone takes away from the story stigmatizes a potentially life saving procedure for many. If they broke it down into demographically true numbers you will find that those who are in the group that kill themselves are probably no more likely to hurt themselves as others in that demographic. So I'm ticked at JAMA again. -
Be honest, did your thin fantasy come true after you lost the weight?
marfar7 replied to Disabledaccount's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My fantasy was to wear a size 6. Last month, I was shopping at Old Navy. Took 2 pairs of white skinny jeans into the dressing room, 8's and 10's (knowing the 8's probly wouldn't fit but hopeful). I walked outa the store with a 6! I think they were mistagged - they were in clearance. It's the only 6's I can wear, but my fantasy definitely came true. They were only $8 but I probly would've paid $100 for em! They are definitely my fav pants now - just cuz they're a 6! Dreams really do come true! And I'm still 26 lbs from goal so I have many more to come. Maybe a size 4 in my future? Unreal! -
Have you tried the Master Gardeners Extensions? http://ag.arizona.edu/pubs/garden/mg/ http://extension.arizona.edu/maricopamg http://www.phxgardening.com/grow-vegetables.html http://www.phoenixtropicals.com/vegetables.html http://www.azcentral.com/style/hfe/outdoors/articles/20100317arizona-spring-planting-guide.html http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/azgard/msg1116045925629.html They all can show and help you to grow crops in the heat. I've used the ones here in Virginia. They're great. Some of them even will allow you to swap stuff with them or teach you things like dehydration, canning, etc. Speaking of which, what about homesteading? Have you looked into that? http://homesteading-arizona.blogspot.com/ http://www.motherearthnews.com/homesteading-and-livestock/yavapai-county-zmaz87jfzgoe.aspx http://thepaleomama.com/2013/10/urbanhomesteading/ http://www.homesteadingtoday.com/general-homesteading-forums/homesteading-questions/285458-az-homesteading.html All of these are ways that you can save money and use less resources, conserve. Things you can do around the house. I know here there are groups that allow you to trade, swap and barter. If you can get to a library also, there are ways of getting books on that, or info. What else have you checked into like this?

Hi 9/19 friend! I'm sorry you're feeling like a truck hit you! That's definitely how I felt my first few days, especially while I was battling the great effects of pain meds vs the nausea the caused. Had a minor anxiety attack at the hospital too just because I kept dry heaving violently and my chest started to hurt from the force. I realized it got better once I was in my own home in a comfortable place. Try to take a quick warm shower, and as soon as you're clear for Protein, take as much as your body can handle. I seem to hit a spot around 9:15 pm where I'm just over 1/4 cups of liquid, but it's helped me so much so far in my recovery since Monday. Be patient, everyone's body heals differently Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -

2.5 Weeks Post-Op sleeve revision to bypass. A little nervous reading these posts
LindsayT replied to Daisy1210's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Weight loss is SO individual. Keep with your program, and you will lose weight. Between my preop diet and 2 months post op (10 weeks total), I've lost 48lbs. And i stall a lot. You got this! -
Mine was 10 and they gave me prescription vitamin d, which you take once a week (weird, right?). Only brought it up slightly so they refilled the prescription. It had NO effect on surgery date. they just said I might need vitamin d injections down the road. Good luck!

I've been tracking my calories and protein the good old fashioned way...paper & pen. Calorie intake around 1100-1300 (based on dr recommendations following metabolism testing) and exercise (elliptical for an hour 5 times a week). Water intake 100oz/day. Protein intake 60-80g/day. So I see on the boards that a lot of people use & recommend myfitnesspal.com for tracking. Thought I would give it a shot....surgery was 5/4/11 and I've been stuck at 10 pounds pre-surgery loss and 10 pounds post-surgery loss (in first month and none since) and I've had one fill (that provided no restriction/hunger control). My question is....after you've entered all of your data (age, weight, goal, exercise, lifestyle) and it gives you a recommended calorie goal for the day.....who follows that and if you do, have you had success? Based on my input (lightly active) and current exercise, it recommends I eat 1950 calories a day. WHAT????? I know that what I've been doing is not dropping any pounds so I'm wondering if I should slightly eat more and meet the dr recommendation and the myfitnesspal.com recommendation in the middle and see how that goes? Needing feedback...thanks!!!!

"That my BMI qualified me for weight loss surgery, not my pocket book." Julie, I just wanted to say way to go on making a decision to lose the weight now. I "only" had 65 pounds to lose, for 16 frickin years! I don't care if its 65 or 165 being obese sucks! Don't feel bad about getting help. I have 10 pounds to go and couldnt be happier. And I was self pay too. Best $10K I ever spent! Just for reference, I tell everyone about my lap band. But I am also 40 years old and I don't give a flip what people think anymore. Do what is right for you.... Leigha

It took until my 3rd fill, about 4 months after my surgery when I started really losing. I lost about 10 lbs post op but that was mainly due to the liquid diet. I ate the same things I did post op as I did preop and thought I had failed this attempt also. Then, 4 mths later, after my 3rd fill something spectacular happened - I got full on only a few bites of food! And if I ate 1 bite too much, I'd vomit. I began losing approx 10 lbs a month. I thought for sure I'd be the one person that this surgery didn't work for. I just passed my 2 yr anniversary and I've lost 100 lbs, with about 15 left to lose. It's radically slowed down the past year, and this last 15 lbs is being very stubborn Good luck to you! Marci

Psych. Evaluation Before Surgery (Do's & Don'ts)
#MagicWithinme replied to PattyGirl66's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think mine lasted 10 minutes which consisted of the dr introducing himself and asking me if I had any questions. I told him I thought I was here for you to ask me questions. he said no, Im here incase you have any questions you may have that would keep you from having this procedure. I said no, he said good luck and that was it!. It took me longer to fill out forms than the visit itself. -
would any of these work in place of Nexium mups?
Oregondaisy replied to Tracy46545's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I love the generic Protonix. I took it before surgery as well. My dr. prescribes it for me to take it twice a day, but I only take it in the morning. That way, I get 60 for $10 -
Isopure fruity drink thingies...
JRT Mom replied to MicheleK's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have a chocolate whey powder that's actually drinkable when mixed with water. I get it at the grocery store--it's called "Pure Protein 100% natural whey protein powder. I also have the Isopure Vanilla protein powder but it's yucky. I also like the isopure drinks. Not only are you getting 40 grams of protein, but also 20 oz of liquid at the same time! I only drink 10 oz at a time also. -
