I started using straws at 5 weeks (yes, I asked both the doctor and NUT first. It was in relation to wearing a Camelback while biking, but the bite-valve tubing is straw-like). Both of them said "try it and see", and sip slowly and mindfully. It didn't bother me, and I started using a straw fairly regularly at home (I have a plastic Starbucks cup with plastic straw that I use for my water). I have a pair of cats, so something with a lid is essential.

I was just wondering how long we have to avoid drinking out of straws? Not a huge issue, but it would make it easier to drink protein shakes if I could use a straw ???? I am almost 3 weeks out from surgery. My diet is mostly protein shakes, Greek yogurts, and clear broth with added unflavored protein at this point.

FIRST QUESTION SINCE BANDING
drae0879 replied to fatfreeat47's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
OMG I feel the same way!! AHAHA :Dancing_hmm: ok I feel better now! I feel like I have pressure under my diaphram when I have had enough to eat. I usually go by how much I have consumed and how long its been since I started eating. I'm just guessing but thats when I put the soup down. If I still have hunger pains I wait 3 hours after I finish to have something else to eat just in case. Its torture! I am SO glad you posted this because I was going to ask (still am) tomorrow on my first postop Drs appt. -
No Pre-Op Diet?!?!
unbesleevable1 replied to gemgirl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Don't torture yourself, just do what your doctor says and be happy about it. Not everyone has to do a pre op starvation diet. If you insist upon doing it, you have a number of options. You can choose a balanced Meal Replacement Protein shake and drink it during the day, staying around 800 cal a day (3-4 shakes). You could do low or no carb, high protein food diet. You could do a combination of the two, keeping your calories around 800. My personal advice, enjoy your last weeks of eating. -
I have been having classic symptoms of gallstones for the last couple of weeks. I saw my surgeon, who ordered an ultrasound and scheduled gall bladder removal for December 30. In the meantime, I'm taking zofran as needed for nausea (and I have some pain meds if it gets really bad). Any suggestions on what to eat that's might not upset things further? I feel so sick to my stomach that I'm not eating much of anything. Still drinking fluids, though. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

Basically whatever you had to do to lose the weight is what you have to do forever in order to maintain. And while that is easy to do for a year or so, life still has its unpleasantries. Surgery does nothing more than make your stomach smaller.....It doesn't "fix" anything else. For many patients, they eventually default back to their old habits of coping. Its the long term psychological changes that help you to continue to Stay on track and maintain the weight loss. Uncovering why you got fat in the first place and modifying those behaviors is what you ultimately need to do. For me, 3 years of therapy and 5+ years support group was key.

Pre-op Diet: How much/steadily to lose?
bobbyswife replied to heynowkc's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Don't worry about it. I'm on pre op liquid day 10 and I dropped 8 lbs within the first 3 days. Now I'm going up 1 one day and down 1 the next. It doesn't make a hill of beans difference to me because logically I KNOW I cannot gain FAT from being on these low calories. I see people stressing out post op because they aren't losing "fast enough" and I just SMH. It will come off eventually. It HAS TO if you're following the rules. Here's one way to think about it. Suppose someone told me that I need to run AS FAST AS I CAN for 2 miles. Well, I'm not in the best shape, so I might take off fast right out of the gate, but pretty soon I'm going to need to STOP and rest for a little bit. Then, I can get going again. Maybe not as fast as I did at the start, but I'm still moving. And guess what? I'm going to need to rest again soon. Your body is doing the same thing. Don't be mad at it for needing to chill out and take a breather for a minute. We never see what's going on on the inside. Your cells and muscles and metabolic response is doing everything it can to keep up with the demands that you've imposed on it. Trust the process. It works. -
Pre-op Diet: How much/steadily to lose?
ProjectMe replied to heynowkc's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks! I was totally thinking the same thing, Plateauing right into surgery...but so far nope. It seems I go a few days fluctuating within 3 lbs of the same weight, then see a loss. This was seriously frustrating in the beginning, but I'm learning to accept my body's reactions and stop stressing over the numbers. I'm hoping & praying you get approved! Your head is obviously in the right place, so don't see why insurance wouldn't approve you!!! -
Yikes! Not here. In fact I think mine has greatly improved. The test will be next week when "lady time" hits. That's when I struggle. I've also been using homemade face cleaner. It's baking soda and water. Make a paste. You can actually leave it on for 5 minutes and rinse well. My face feels soo clean afterwards:-)

I don't see why not but maybe you should try it for a short time, 15 mins or so and see how you feel. If your incisions are healed you are probably OK but you might want to ask your Dr. Just to be sure. pre-surgery weight 325; surgery date 2/28/2013; surgery weight 307; 8 weeks past-op weight 281.4; 12 weeks post-op 274; 4 month post-op 266.2

Going back to work
Amyllf2 replied to weightlossdiva1234's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It depends on your job. I went back after a week. Felt like crap but I was in the middle of a semester and could not miss classes. It was only 3 hours in the classroom. Driving to and from was the worse part. I think 2 weeks would have been the best bet for me. I felt much better by then. -

Gallbladder Issues...anyone Had/have Them?
KevinsBabyGirl85 replied to Kathy's New Life's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm sure you'll be fine waiting the 3 months until your surgery! I was told in 2008 that I had gall stones and I didn't have it removed until I had my surgery in 2012! That's the best way to do it so you don't have 2 different surgeries! Ask your PCP to put you on a strong anti acid med it will help with the gall bladder attacks and the pain! -
