Hospital Angeles (Tijuana) - CLOSING?
Okiebon replied to Okiebon's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
@Brians147 Wow, you look TERRIFIC! And very, very happy. Congratulations on your success! I'm so glad that your tumor was benign! I'm planning to have the Mini Gastric Bypass as well. It is wonderful to hear from someone who's had the procedure. Did your surgeon say why he opted to do the MGB over an RNY gastric bypass? I'm always curious to hear what made someone select the MGB since it isn't as widely known. -
Not sure why but I have read countless studies about alcoholism being a direct correlation of weight loss surgery patients.. I know of two people that have had surgeries (one had the sleeve and one had bypass) that are struggling with the use of alcohol and I fear that I could potentially be on the verge.. Has anyone else struggled with this? I also wonder why there is even a connection???

Just Found Out My Insurance Excludes WLS =(
windfaerie replied to chikesweightlossjourney's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I had to have a hernia repair and another surgery for heartburn. I paid my deductible ($2500) and $5000 to the hospital for the bypass fees. My doctor took his payment from the hernia repair and the other procedure. The insurance was billed nothing for the bypass. -
Pre Surgery Requirements for RA Patients
Mhy12784 replied to ChellNC's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That's a fair point, but assuming you have a bypass at 72 it's not like you have to worry about the arthritis getting worse for the next 50 years. If you were in your 20s and 30s that could be 50 years of undertreated arthritis where you can't have nsaids and limited steroids, which could have a huge difference on quality of life. Especially something like RA where you should be aggressive early on It's a difficult situation and I don't think there is a clear cut answer -
Had a gastric bypass revision on mar. 18. I was 332 at my pre-op office visit, 313 on surgery day. I am down to 299. i have my first post -op visit tomorrow. I am in an amazingly good mood. I think it is from the healthier eating and Vitamins. I just hope I lost enough in the 3 weeks since the surgery. I am disabled and cannot move much. I did put in a flower garden with lots of help from my grandson. I can mostly work on the planters, but I think it will be fun to watch the flowers grow while I shrink. The dreaded huge double chin shrank a little and I saw it in a picture taken yesterday! It is still there, but much smaller.

Lap Band: Am I Crazy to Consider It?
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to Rjc0704's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
If you won't consider GS or DS, why not bypass? I got the sleeve and had A LOT of complications. I just got a revision from sleeve to bypass on June 28th, so there ARE things that can be done for the sleeve if there's an issue. Why is the bypass off the table? -

Anyone have a sleeve fail and did bypass? HELP
woo woo replied to peacheeie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You have lost 20 pounds already, that's a very decent loss for someone coming off a band revision. Especially considering you only had 50 to lose. That's already nearly half your extra weight. I would focus on following my program and getting my exercise etc and give it some time before thinking about another surgery. It seems a bit premature for all this drama and feeling betrayed. Just my opinion. Good luck either way. -
Thanks for the insight, everyone, so I'm just gonna sum it up by saying that slim fast is a no go. I had the bypass and was trying to find ways to get my protein in and increase my weight loss since I was told by my nutritionist that I was below the weight loss expectations.

Queen Michelle, Yes, you can gain weight back with the lapband. But it is harder to do than it is with the bypass. This is mostly becausewith the band and slower weight loss, you have more time to deal with developing good eating habits. ONce the bypass patients pass their window of opportunity which is about 18 months, if they havent learned good eating habits some of them regain. Also with the bypass once the stomach stretches a little and the newly created pouch increases in size, it is possible to eat more. With the lapband, you can get adjustments and change your level of restriction for perpetuity. At least to me, the lapband is a much more effective tool Babs in TX 334/192/170 -142 6/23/03

I went to a seminar on Band vs Bypass. There are certain foods bypass patients must avoid for ever or else they'll "dump." For example, most can't eat chocolate or they "dump." Dumping is to bypass patients what PB-ing is to us. They eat something that their body rejects because it's unable to process it, so they dump (get really sick and spend a lot of time in the bathroom losing the food either by mouth or bottom.) Dumping sounds extremely horrible. Bypass patients lose weight really fast for three reasons: 1. They have a tiny capacity new stomach. 2. The intestines are re-wired so food goes straight through; 3. They get physically ill from foods their body rejects. They physically can't eat certain foods without dumping, while banded people can eat just about anything within reason. However, bypass patients can slowly train their bodies to accept foods that were once forbidden. My friend had a bypass 10 years ago and gained nearly all her weight back by training herself to eat. She ate all day long, little nibbles, of all goodies that used to make her dump. She introduced them slowly. The same is true for the band though. If we allow ourselves small amounts of goodies all day long, we'll eventually gain weight back without damaging the band. Did that make any sense at all?

Bypass patients have a window of opportunity to lose their weight , it is like 1-2 yrs out. After that their pouch is the same size if not stretched, their body adjusts to that size pouch which is why so many of them gain some weight back. Unlike us band patients we can forever adjust our bands so if we get to goal and then feel we are gaining weight we can just go have a fill and start to lose again. DId Roseanne have the bypass or the Fobi pouch? I thought she had the FObi pouch..also Randy Jackson and Al Roker both have put some of their weight back on since their bypass surgeries. Carnie Wilson has, but I believe she is also pregnant however she had put some weight on before her pregnancy. My uncle has had the bypass and has lost 170 in 2 years. He started to put a few pounds back on, but got back on track. He eats 5-6 times a day just a little bit so his pouch does not stretch and he keeps his metabolism moving by little meals all day long..he is still losing

Poll- Pg when did you get unfilled?
libra replied to jillrn's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Congrats bushbaby....twins!!! Wow, rest up now, you'll need it later. Congrats to you too avasmommy. When's your due date? Mine's been changed to April 2nd. My mother is thrilled because the April birthstone is a diamond for her "grandmother ring" LOL!! I think it's insane for people to judge one another regarding fills during pregnancy. My OB has dealt with several pregnant bypass patients but never a bandster. She said if bypassers can have a healthy pregnancy, she doesn't see the need for me to get a total unfill unless I'm having difficulty eating healthy foods. -
If my band messes up i will get a bypass, forget this messing around! It seems to me to be so many people who have had problems (saw this before this poll) I dont know if I am only seeing the neggative but i would have never guessed so many people would have so many problems.

Meetings are at 6:30 on the last Tuesday of every month at the Hospital in the Montgomery Room. (Down stairs from St. Albans) There is one on the 27th and they generally last about an hour. The last meeting the room was full and there was only one person who was there for bypass all others were bandsters  I will be coming from work so I will be the one in the Detention Home shirt Hope to see ya there!! typically in Texas any marketplace plan will not cover any kind of bariatric surgery. SO its a lot of the southern states that do not cover it due to the fact that the majority of people there are overweight and eat poorly. (Which is what one insurance agent told me) So the only way to get it covered would be to move to a state that does cover it, get your surgery and move back. I thought about that if i ever needed a revision because here in Florida its also excluded. I paid cash for my surgery

Paperwork submitted to Insurance!

@@kewadiak That's great news! I am getting all my clearances now and just learned that I have gallstones.. So now I am hoping they can do revision and gallbladder removal at the same time.. Will find out what my pre op with surgeon in 9th. Really hope I will wake up and not have to be disappointed that they couldn't do it in one.. I feel like so much to get done, but all I have left is upper GI and chest X-ray, then just blood work and EKG 2 weeks before surgery. Liquid diet starts on 28th... That's next week! Crazyness. I get so much more nervous as it gets closer to the date. -
I was sleeved April last year in Edinburgh so not much use to you re Homerton Hospital:) Have you had a look on Youtube? Here are a few people that I follow. Go back to the start of their videos, they are a huge source of information and support. All are American and therefore some of the dietary stuff is different from the UK and some had lapband or gastric bypass but lots of the day to day information is the same... best of luck to you, you'll soon start feeling great and getting your life back! I got my lapband in 2006 and loved it.I lost over 100 lbs and felf great. However it needed to be removed due to slippage. Medical necessity, not by choice. It was removed last November 2014. I got two Doctors opinions, both prefer to do the two surgerys seperately to give everything enought time to heal. I am now fighting with insurance company. My wonderful Doctor did have a peer to peer with my insurance company to explain why he felt I needed the revision to the sleeve. I have written 2 appeal letters and have been denied 3 time. It is now in the hands of a third party. I was wondering if there are others out there with similar storys. I am going to have the surgery regardless even if I have to self pay, which would wipe out all my savings. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Who is your doctor? What hospital are/have you used?
JustFluffy replied to JustFluffy's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
I just realized I didn't reply after surgery... I still absolutely love my revision doctor, John Nye. He is a very thorough doctor. I've had some complications recovering though, but no way to I blame him for the BS I went through... I loved Baptist Hospital the day of surgery and through the first night. However, after the nurse left I may as well been at home and had my husband see about me. The drain in my chest (hooked to a pump) was only about 1/8 full when we left. I don't then after the first night that they turned it back on...nor my IV machine...it constantly beeped. They would unhook me to walk or to to the bathroom and then "poof" disappear. Shawn (hubby) finally asked them to show him how to turn the machine beeps off, hook back up my leg pumps...everything... The reason I believe the drain wasn't working (or turned off), is my best friend just had revision surgery (same hospital) and she had 3x the amount of drainage I did. She is two weeks post op and all her incisions and drain areas have closed. Mine finally closed three weeks ago. It took two months to heal...Nye says I had a reaction to the sutures (my incision kept coming open - he didn't stitch me closed for a month due to drainage)...so it took two months for me to "naturally" drain and dry up enough to heal and close. It sucked! It hurt! At my two month check up he had to "burn" the drain area (right below my sternum) - set me on fire. It f'ing hurt...bad...couldn't sleep for over a month... So that is the bad...and probably one of the worse things that can happen when it comes to recovery. Honestly, I blame the inept nurses that kept forgetting or neglecting me. -
Who is your doctor? What hospital are/have you used?
adot replied to JustFluffy's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Dr. Andrew Dewitt, Princeton hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. He's a wonderful surgeon. I chose him for a few reasons: 1. I met other people he'd performed surgeries on. RNY and other stomach surgeries. 2. I'd spoken with people that he had done revisions on and they had great things to say about him. 3. Many friends and family members that work in medicine and local hospitals said they'd choose him for themselves or a loved one. 4. I just liked him and felt at ease with him. 5. I liked his staff.
