I'm in my 6 month diet phase and scared to eat
Djmohr replied to WitchySar's topic in Pre-op Diets and Questions
I do think you are likely too worried about it at this stage. Mostly because you are worried about disappointing them. It should be about you. You are the one working very hard to get yourself healthy. Sometimes worrying about things like that actually triggers the need to run to food. I would suggest maybe talking to a therapist about your feelings because if they are getting to you now, they will certainly get to you once your body changes and you have to deal with that and head hunger. Most people do not realize exactly how much change you go through after Bariatric surgery. It is a significant change and it impacts everyone around you. For example my husband tends to still eat like crap stopping at fast food restaurants for meals. I never ever ever eat fast food. I cannot stomach it, the idea of it is gross. That makes it difficult when we are on the road and need to grab something to eat. Because I chose this for myself, I tend to make sure that I am careful about inconveniencing others so I will always find something to eat regardless of where we go. I am also careful to have a Protein bar on me. Hopefully you get the idea. I chose this for me an honest it is ok to be selfish for a while. Lose the 10lbs for yourself because it will make your surgery safer for you. If you are hungry there are lots of options for a small protein healthy snack. Have a Greek yogurt or an ounce of nuts. Just measure and track so you know where you are at any given time. Tracking helps to hold yourself accountable and most of all it helps in making better choices. I use Myfitnesspal and it works great. Best of luck to you! -
Question about vomiting
tamg26k replied to *Lexie*'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@alwaysvegas I'm the same way, I eat too fast! I'm about 4 1/2 months post op and I have had food come back up several times. It is always because I took too big of a bite or ate too fast and food gets stuck. It is not a nice feeling. Lot's of foamies come up along with the food. I'm trying to eat slower. It happens less frequently now, but does sometimes happen. I still try to eat really soft Proteins (shaved deli meat or something with a yogurt sauce), take small bites, and eat slower. -

Problems getting protein in my diet...
mocha replied to Sleevie WonderLand's topic in Food and Nutrition
Sleevie, I'm just 4 wks out today too. Some things sit pretty heavy in my sleeve; I can only eat 1/2 a scrambled egg and it still doesn't feel good. So in my experimenting, I've made chili w/ground beef and dk red kidney Beans. That worked well with a little bit of 2% cheese melted over it. If beef doesn't work for you, try ground chicken or turkey. I also made this great salmon chowder (recipe is on bariatriceating.com). Nicely flavored, fish was moist and it's milk and chicken broth based. Try making it with lactaid milk or use lactaid tablets. I use Chobani low fat plain greek yogurt and stir in sugar free strawberry preserves with a little truvia for sweetener. 17g Protein per 6 oz serving. Again, use a lactaid tablet to help you tolerate lactose. Also tomato soup w/a serving of cottage cheese mixed in. I wonder if we can tolerate the Protein Bars yet? Maybe if we chew it to mush? At Walmart's, I found a mug warmer for $10. I warm my food up in the microwave and then put it on the warmer between bites. I hate cold food! LOL Hope this helps. -
You didn't mention how far out you are, but at almost 4 months out, I carry beef Jerky, mixed nuts, Oh Yeah Bars, and Protein powder. If it is all inclusive, all food at restaurant should be included as well as drinks. Most resorts have a commissary as well, where you can buy snack foods like dried fruit, yogurt, etc. What resort are you staying at? I've stayed at several, I might be able to give you insight on the availability.

Don't Waste Your Money- Shop After Pre & Post Diets Given By Md
IsaacsGram posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am now on day 2 of my pre-op diet, surgery in 12 days. In my anxiousness to "be ready" I bought cases of Protein shakes, soy milk, V-8 mini cans, a variety of fruits and berries, and high protein Cereal & a dozen greek yogurts. GUESS WHAT? None of that is on my pre-op diet and the rest I can't have until 6 months after surgery! I had just read too much and thought I knew what was going to be ordered- I WAS WRONG! So once again, remember---research, research, research---but always take YOUR doctor's advice BEFORE buying anything!- 13 replies

I'm in need of some new snack ideas. What are you all eating for snacks? I don't necessarily need strict protein snacks, but certainly not a lot of sugar as I try to stay away. I get plenty of protein from meals alone. I find that I have to snack two - three times a day. Is that how you other maintainers are? I pretty much can't make it between lunch and dinner without a snack, and same goes for after dinner. I'm not a huge fruit person, and I HATE yogurt. I regularly do veggies with hidden valley ranch dip mix mixed with light sour cream. Growing a little tired of this. I'm also growing tired of jerky and string cheese. I'm afraid I'm getting bored and going to start snacking on not so good things since everything I eat lately is getting quite boring! Please give me some new ideas! Must be delicious....

My Experience So Far And Constantly Spitting Everyday
Jellyfish posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Firstly, I had surgery 8 weeks ago. My highest weight was 338 last year November-ish. I weighed 333 before my 1 week pre-op liquid diet. I weighed 316 the day before surgery. I now weigh 273. I've lost 65 pounds. I'm expecting to hit the 260's in the next 4 days. I am expecting to lose 70 pounds in the next 7 days. I want to Celebrate this but it was such an unhappy unpleasant process to losing this weight. Let me break it down: Week 1 post op - I was sore but recovered very well. I was always exhausted and I slept a lot. I was on a 0 sugar liquid diet. Keep in mind I was also on a 1 week pre-op 0 sugar or low sugar liquid diet the week before. Week 2 post- I was weak. I could barely walk around. I gave up on the 0 sugar or low sugar part of the diet. I did not care what my doctor's nutrition plan said. Gatorade was my savior! Powerade was my friend! 0 artificial sugar added apple juice diluted with Water got me through the week. On top of that, I was starving. I tried to eat a spoon full of tuna on Wednesday but I threw it up immediately. I thought about food a lot. Someone told me i need counselling cause it was "head hunger". I actually collapsed one morning when I got out of bed and fell into the wall. That's when I knew It was not head hunger. I couldn't leave the house. I wasn't fit to drive. Weeks 3 - 4 - I began to eat which was amazing. I was on a soft food diet. I didn't eat everyday because i couldn't. I couldn't always hold food down. I vomited occasionally. However, I was happy I could eat at all. It had been 3 weeks without food. Yogurt was like a blessing. Still I didn't eat daily and mostly drank cranberry juice and orange juice all the time with chew-able multi-Vitamins. I began throwing up pills. I think inflammation was making it hard for me to swallow anything solid. My throat was very inflamed so i switched to chewables. Week 5 - Horrible. I was stronger thanks to the juice. My wounds were healed but I threw up fairly often wether I had eaten or not. I began spitting up mucus. I had Nausea all the time. I developed severe Acid reflux. I took chew-able tums. Itwas trying really hard to not let it interfere with my life and relationship but I had to stay home alot. I really wanted to be working out but i wasn't well. I found temporary relief in slushies and slurpees and began having one everyday from juice shops, cafes or 711. Some days I had 2. They just went down so easy and the ice particles felt amazing against my throat. Much of the inflammation went away. I was eating pho Soup and thin slices of meat in the beginning of the week but by the end of it, Slushies were my only thing. Food, just brought on too much acid reflux. Week 6 - to now (week 8) - The acid reflux intensified to the point where I needed something better than tums. It was horrible in week 6. I started taking Zantac. Slushies and ice slushed drinks are still the only thing that go down easy. Most juices are intolerable because they are too acidic. By the end of week 7, the acid reflux calmed alot and I just had occasional heart burn. I take less Zantac pills now. . I either spit up or vomit up mucus almost every day for the last 2 weeks. Decongestant pills work for a day or two but makes me throw up horribly soon after taking it. I was throwing up bile. I started using therflu drink. It was working but now the taste is intolerable. Last time, i even threw that up. So I'm avoiding medication. I spit up everyday, all day, throughout the day. I keep a bottle in the car to spit in. I sometimes throw up mucus while driving. I felt strong enough to exercise so last week I went to the gym and jogging outside a couple times. I wanted to do more but then spitting up mucus became constant. I had to spit every few minutes. I had to stop jogging or walking sometimes to throw up. I spit when i'm out with friends. It happens even when I don't eat. I'm spitting into a bottle as I type this. It will go away eventually and it isn't getting any worse than it is but it is definitely a burden. It doesn't hurt but It's gross. I usually eat once a day but not everyday. I didn't eat anything yesterday. The spitting makes eating too tedious. I ate alot on Sunday though. I ate like 6 or 7 bites of food that whole day because i was vacationing but i still spent the day spitting. Now, 2 days later i'm still full and haven't eaten anything. I drink milk, slushies and vitamins. Surprisingly, I lost 5 pounds in the last 2 days. The eating may have actually boosted my metabolism. Makes sense given how little I eat. Is there anyone with this spitting problem? Is their a temporary solution? I've lost weight but in a very crappy way. I've been unwell most of the last 6 weeks. It's affected everything. My relationship, my social life and my career moves have mostly been on pause. I believe that this is just a temporary problem and that the body will recover from it eventually. I just wish i had a temporary solution for this one. In any case, I plan on working out this week. I really expect to lose alot of weight by the Friday of next week. Atleast 10 pounds is my goal but we'll see .- 13 replies

Sugar Free and Fat Free?
Bandista replied to shantra's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm with you, Shantra -- I cannot figure out why people eat that crap when pure food is so delicious. Why not eat really well, especially when we're having so much less than before? All those addictive chemicals, blech. One of my pet peeves recently is that Stevia is being widely sold in a blend with maltodexterine. For people who have no nutritional background or who are not real label readers, this is so misleading. When I was waiting to be banded I was nervous about having to give up certain foods. One of my fears was that I'd become lactose-intolerant -- no idea where I got that idea except that I love dairy and was nervous about forfeiting favorite foods, etc. So happy that now I can have a little cheese or a small yogurt and it doesn't set me off on a "more, more, more" feast. Love the band and having my appetite dimmed. I feel like I can have what I want and need, just in small amounts. -
Guidelines... Please help
marfar7 replied to AshWalker's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'll letcha know. I have my 1st appt with the RD today at 11am (and I'm almost 8 weeks post op). One thing that I've noticed that is different from my MD's advice from the others here is mine says not to do low fat versions of anything cept dairy products. Everything else (including mayo) is sposed to be full fat. Keeps u satiated a bit longer. And fat doesn't make u fat, thats the old thinking. Yes, there's more calories in a gram of fat than in Protein or carbs but those all come out in the wash. And since doing so, I feel so much less deprived. Let me tell how exhilarating it is using regular salad dressing instead of fat free. Or worse - calorie free, fat free=taste free. So the only low fat product I now use is 1% milk (oh, and light yogurt. I actually don't like regular yogurt). Can't do skim milk, reminds me of breast milk (see thru) Shows how different our drs and RD's are... -

Sleeved on April 13th and oblivious what to do.
LSanchez238 replied to sc09's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had the same problems with gas and air in the chest the first week or so. I was also having trouble getting up from my chair and sitting down... I was 488 lbs before pre-op diet. 467 lbs pre-op. I had my surgery on April 18th and managed fine. I drank clear liquids the first 5 days along with chewable multivitamin and chewable calcium tablets, then started with yogurt and mashed potatoes. I noticed each day I was getting my strength back. On the 6th day I tried beans from del taco and it had to be the best choice ever, my stomach tolerated them just fine, and I started getting relief from gas build up. I have lost 27 lbs since my surgery with minimal exercise. I walk and work. Sent from my Z981 using BariatricPal mobile app -
Options! I need options!
Inner Surfer Girl replied to scampbell33's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When I was on soft foods I ate refried Beans with cheese, cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, tuna, grilled salmon, etc. I didn't have room for much more than the Protein. I did start having some green beans on occasion, but I certainly wouldn't have had room for mashed potatoes (plus, I avoid starches). The World According To Eggface blog has some recipe ideas for the soft phase. -
Week 5 post surgery diet & exercise
Inner Surfer Girl replied to Hanasleeved's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What phase are you on at 4 weeks? At 4 weeks I was still eating a lot if Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, tuna, turkey, fish, refried Beans, etc. I was cleared to get in the pool once my incisions had healed over at about 4 weeks post-op. Swimming is my favorite exercise and I have been in the pool ever since! -

On my diet list of foods at 3 days I can go on full liquids which inludes pudding, yogurt and cream of wheat ect.

I was going to suggest Quest protein bars as a replacement for cookies, but I see the above post from Therealmeishere beat me to it. Like anything else moderation is the key. Maybe consider 3 oz of plain Greek yogurt mixed with chocolate or strawberry protein powder which will be like a pudding. Gotta stay away from the real cookies, you have done too much hard work to move backwards now. FYI your after pic us beautiful, but then again your before pic is beautiful too

Have lots of protein. Follow your docs orders but I was allowed stuff like nonfat plain yogurt, protein shakes, cream of wheat, non fat milk, sugar free pudding, n non fat powder milk for the added protein, to enrich your milk. I didn't really have an appetite till day 6 post op n felt really hungry on day 7. Day 7 I saw my doc n he allowed me to have blended foods. He said mostly protein, lots of water, n start exercise. The blended protein has been great for me n has kept me satisfied. I just have trouble with recipes n trying to figure out what to blend with my chicken, Turkey, n fish with. No red meat for me yet.

Ok... Sorry for your struggles! I had hummus, cottage cheese, yogurt right after surgery. All good sources of protein. I also had peanut butter... Just a spoon. My surgeon said the first month is all about water... Drinking water is going to help the inside stitches heal. Pooping takes a while to get right. You have nothing to poop right now so don't sorry about it.... Try some of these soft foods... Also broth is great! Good luck!

I agree with Jack - the pain meds could be the problem. Strange as it seems, being nauseated post band surgery is not commen. At her stage, many bandsters are only taking liquid tylenoyl for pain. Also, she may need a little more substance in her tummy to help it settle down - try a small yogurt milkshake from McDonalds. A small one is not going to hurt! Actually, those things saved my life a few times. Hope its not a stomach bug!

Hey!!! Are u allowed to have yogurt??? -
anyone else had major constipation to the point of being in the restroom for up to 6 hrs a night since being banded? if so, has anything helped you besides otc laxatives and meds? my dietician says it's from not getting in enough water. she has told me she wants me to limit vegetables, fruit and the only fiber i can get is a little fiber one cereal with a yogurt at night. she tells me not to have any kind of bread including whole wheat. i've read that alot of people on here eat a variety of foods but my dr's office and dietician aren't as flexible. i told my husband i'm not taking my food journal next time i go and i may try to eat whole grain items till i see that i'm not losing more weight. is everyone else's dietician so strict? 'cause i've read a few threads on here that others eat whatever they want, just in moderation. any responses are appreciated.
