    *my Journey*

You're staying away from the German brotchen? Good girl! I served in Germany in 1997-2000 (near Wurzburg) and have been to K - Town. Enjoy your time in Europe. You'll always want to go back once you're gone! Congrats on the loss! WTG! Marci Oh, and the German bread, yogurt, and the donor kebabs (those little devilish Turkish sandwiches) were all to die for!

    Bougie Size?

My new tummy was sized over a 40 bougie, It really depends on the surgeons technique. As for four cups, it depend on 4 cups of what. You will never be able to eat 4 cups of solid Protein, such as beef, pork, chicken, or fish. But you probably will be able to eat 4 cups of popcorn. I'm almost a year out. For Breakfast, I had 1 cup of greek yogurt, mixed with 1/3 cup berries and on the side I had oatmeal (1/4 cup oatmeal cooked in 1/2 cup water). I was full and it took be about 30 minutes to eat. For lunch I had chicken salad (3 oz. chicken breast, 1/3 small apple, 2 T. dried cranberries, 1 tsp. walnuts, 2 T. lite mayo and a small handful of spinach) with about 10 whole grain wheat thin crackers. For a snack this afternoon I had 1 oz. of pretzels. For dinner I plan to have 3 oz. of shrimp with 1/4 cup cocktail sauce and another handful of spinach. For a late night snack, I will have a couple of cups of popcorn and a small orange. Lynda

    Bm..help????

It took me about a week initially. I finally had a probiotic yogurt and things happened. I still have occassional times when I can't go for a day or two. I was always very regular. Make sure you are drinking lots of water as well.
  5. Absolutely not. I'm currently in the Stage 2 diet meaning I can eat cottage cheese, yogurt, soups, etc in 1-2 oz sittings. I have found that since I can now eat some solid food I want to resume eating more. The 1-2 oz fills me up but I find I'm having to exercise a great deal of restraint with not wanting to "nibble" on other proteins. For now the carbs aren't a huge issue for me as I've done Atkins before with significant success.
  6. Denise this is really hard and we have all been through it, but seriously follow your doctor's orders. Your stomach is healing from surgery. You cannot have anything solid or mushy digesting in your stomach right now, because your stitches are healing. I found myself feeling really hungry as well, so I called my doctor and stated so. They allowed me to have yogurt and milk, but that was my doctor's directives for me. So call your doctor. Don't take a chance with your health and don't chance the possibility of your band slipping.
  7. Hi Lace! I was banded May 13 also. I was sore getting up and down for the first couple of days too. I had to stay one night in the hospital. I work as a nurse and do alot of lifting. My surgeon told me not to go back to work for ten days, but since my post op appt isn't until May 28, I can't start work until May 29. I have lost eleven and a half pounds so far. I'm so excited about that! I started on a full liquid diet today. For breakfast I ate a yogurt and had a protein shake about two hours later. I was supposed to start the protein shake an hour after breakfast, but I still felt really full. I had alot of trouble with pains in my chest and belly from the gas...no shoulder pain either. Good luck with everything guys!

    Daily menu

It's Passover right now, so no bread, cracker or Pasta items for me. This year it actually isn't that traumatic since I've cut those items way down since being banded on 2/17. Morning: Starbucks Tall Skinny Cinnamon Dulce Latte (only like 90 cals/14 carbs/9 protein) Breakfast: 1/2 cup of egg salad w/ dill, onions and light mayo. 1/2 cup pineapple Lunch: 3oz grilled chicken with light ranch wrapped in boston lettuce leafs. 1/2 cup cucumber salad Snack: Fage 0% Greek Yogurt - Cherry Pomegranate Pre-Workout: GNC Lean shake - Vanilla Dinner: 3 meatballs, 1/4 cup pasta sauce, 1/4 cup 1% cottage cheese on top and melted. 1 cup of matzo ball soup.
  9. I switched from clear fluids to more "full" liquids yesterday and my food intake yesterday was: 1/4-1/2 cup of yogurt 1 strained campells Soup at hand ( I had it at two seperate times, I think about a cups worth) 1/2 cup of beef broth 1 instant packet of cream of wheat Is this normal? I was expecting to not get that much food in? Today I just blended some baked potato soup and added some ff milk to it and I had about 3/4 of a cup. I feel "full" or satisfied right now but again just surprised I'm getting that down. How much are you guys intaking or did you intake just 7 days post op?
  10. Tomorrow will be 2 weeks for me and I'm also not feeling so great, but I'm managing. I actually felt better last week. I'm able to swallow pills, but it is true that warm liquid is very soothing and goes down easier. I actually find puddings and yogurts go down easier than liquid. My doctor also told me hydration is priority right now, nutrition is second. I do start my day with an unjury Protein drink with milk and I warm it for 40 seconds in the microwave just to get it a little warm. It goes down easy and I am getting 8 oz liquid and 30 grams of protein all down at the start of my day. The rest of the day I'm sipping liquid, I also make sure to have a chobani yogurt a day as they are really tasty and slide right down and there is another 18 grams of protein. My biggest issue right now is the incision sites. One in particular, the big one where the stomach came out. It is in such a bad spot and it is killing me every time I move or bend. The other incisions don't hurt at all but my entire stomach area in general hurts. Have you every done any ab workouts like crunches or something? My stomach feels like the day after doing 100 crunches. I don't know why but that is the exact feeling. Weird. I'm sure we'll all feel good soon enough. Stay strong everyone! It will all be worth it in end!
  11. I don't know how I did this. For the first two weeks I was on Clear liquids and stuck to it except for a couple times when I had some mashed potatoes or a blended Soup. I'm supposed to be on full liquids until the 8th and then mushies. I just felt so good I started eating solids, albeit very healthy ones. I have lost 30 pounds all together (18 post-op) and hit a stall at 3 weeks that seems to have broken today after I went down a pound. THE QUESTION: Should I go a step back and go back totally on full liquids? It doesn't seem like cream Soups are all that healthy, but I still do cottage cheese and yogurt every day. Cucumber gave me pause, but broccoli, carrots, squash and Beans are fine. In fact, there is nothing I can't seem to eat so far. eggs, cheese, chicken, pork, beef, fish - all fine. I didn't do this flippantly, It just seemed to be feel normal. I go between 550-650 calories a day. Here is a days menu: Total 591 Cals. 22.7 Fat (g) 28.9 Carbs (g) 69.3 Protein (g) Milk, 2% fat 6 oz MaxProteinVanilla 1 serving Tuna, fresh raw 3 oz Somersaults Pacific Sea Salt 1/2 serving (Low carb, high protein cracker things) Cheese, cottage, lowfat, 2% 1/4 cup Cucumber 5 slices Cheese,Blue 1/8 cup Cheese,Ricotta 1/8 cup Salami, dry 1 slice P.S. The Salami and riccota cheese is an Eggface recipe in which you take a slice of salami, put it into a mini muffin pan and fill it with ricotta cheese seasoned with spices and topped with a tiny bit of mozzerella cheese. They are savory little protein cupcakes that are to die for. I made mine smaller and cut the egg yolk. The greek yogurt and gorganzolla or blue cheese is another Eggface recipe. It makes a great dip. Everything she makes is geared with protein in mind. If you dip your meats or veggies, you may as well do it high protein instead of using commercial dressings or sauces.

    Confused With Post Op Diet

Two days after surgery the hospital started me on puréed foods. I was told to stay on puréed diet until my first post op appointment mid-May. I couldn't get anything down the first few days but now i eat lentil and / or black bean soups everyday, yogurt, cream of wheat and protein shakes all day. I take in over 100 g of protein each day but I am concerned that I'm doing too much too soon.
  13. I've been having 1-2 oz grilled salmon every few days and it is delic. Very small bites and chew it up to mush. Awesome. Also sounds Grose but sometimes I mix in blueberry Greek yogurt with the salmon and it is so good!!!!! The salmon alone is very high in protein but add the greek yogurt in and bam! A good 20-25 gr protein. Baby bel cheese is delic too.

    7 Days to go!!!!

Everyone on this site can relate! It's the hardest part of the process. My doctor allowed pureed soups, low fat yogurt, sugar free ice pops, fruit smoothies and sugar free jello. Good luck!

    Foods to Avoid

If you have a Kroger or Fred Meyer near you, I would suggest trying some of the CarbMaster Yogurt. It's a great source of protein/low carbs and very filling (if you add 1/2 scoop of unflavored Protein powder, you get even more protein and no change in taste). This is hard time, but follow your instructions. They were written to help you heal and maximize your weightloss. As noted above refried Beans were AWESOME when I got to the puree stage. Also, try pureed chili and Campbell's Beef Vegetable - they are higher in carbs, but the little you eat shouldn't be a problem. They have a lot of flavor and can satisfy that need to "eat" real food. Best of luck!
  18. Have your team ruled out a stricture ? Any time that liquids are being vomited back up, alarm bells should ring. It is a easy fix I believe. Lots of us have issues with nausea and not wanting to eat foods and drinks that were our go to ones before surgery. I didn't do Protein drinks but have read on here that there are ones with sugar substitutes that really give people problems. My husband is diabetic so we have lots of sugar substitutes and every one of them make me vomit. I use real sugars if I need any. Lots of us find we are intolerant of dairy, nuts etc. Our new stomachs are really fussy. I also had a filthy taste in my mouth from the ketones for months. I still take Lansoprazole 30mg twice a day and when I need it Gaviscon I could not face the puree stage, just thinking about the texture made me heave so I missed that stage all together and stayed on homemade soups, yogurts, cream cheese, pate until I could go on to foods that were squashed with a fork. One tip that I was given was to have my drinks warm. My stomach accepted them better. I never drink plain water, I have never liked it. I add a little fruit juice or add Bovril or Oxo stock cubes.
  19. I am almost 3 months out. My doctor has a food plan of introducing all proteins at 4 weeks, start vegetables at 2 months, potatoes (all varieties) at 4 months, fruits at 6 months and all foods at 1 year. The nutritionist said try some fruits at 2 months as they may be easier to digest vs vegetables however be aware of carbs/sugars etc. A lot of others post here about potatoes and oatmeal a few weeks after surgery. So far all is well but I feel like I am not getting natural vitamin sources with such a limited diet. I do take calcium and bariatric multivitamin. I'm in a rut and stick to a premier shake, yogurt, some meat (protein, tuna, egg) and some limited vegetables like carrots, cauliflower, and broccoli. Is anyone else trying chia seeds? ground flax? fruits this early post op? I asked about nuts and the nutritionist said to try it slowly. When I look at Keto recipes they have a lot of foods I have not tried yet. I am feeling a little overwhelmed so I just stick with my basic foods. I have lost an average of 3 pounds per week form month 2-3 on 600 calories and started at a BMI of 35 so I think I may be losing too fast (I never thought that would be a concern). Any tips?
  20. Hey bandsters! Im going to be visiting my friend and the plane ride is 6 hours long (from Cali to Florida) and im going to need to bring food with me. I'm new, surgery date 1/27/13...

I had yogurt and cottage cheese creamed soups, cream of wheat, mashed bananas
  22. My weight loss progressively slowed down each month post-op. Over time, I needed more calories to be satiated. Finally, at 9 months post-op, the weight loss stopped right at my Ideal Body Weight. I'm currently 14 mo post-op, and I'm still experimenting with how much and what to eat to maintain. I currently eat about 1800-2000 calories a day. I don't follow a specific diet now, but I try to stay focused on protein, eating clean, limited (and healthy) snacking. My biggest challenge is grazing. My restriction makes it hard to eat actual meals, so I find myself eating "pieces" of food throughout the day... some cheese here, an apple there, a piece of ham, some greek yogurt, a protein bar, etc. It's working ok for now, but it's something I'm monitoring. Initially, I was tracking everything I ate, but I don't do that now. I keep a running tab in my head, and I'm trying to get to the point that I can regulate intuitively. I weigh myself every morning. I've regained about a pound from my lowest weight.
  23. Am I the only one that is driven nuts by the contraindications in what we are suppose to do. How are sugar free drinks any different from sugar free jello, pudding, popsicles, yogurt ect. Artifical sweetners are artificial sweetners, how does it matter in which form they come in. I do not drink them all day long and I try and keep my water up. I drink a galon of liquids a day. I have one packet a day and it is only for 20 0z but I fill my nalgreen bottle all the way. Just my tirade for the day.

Some Days are HARDER than others

Jody, Vinesqueen is right you know. We are all like vanilla yogurt in the beginning and through each experience or trial that we have endured and learned from, we become more flavorful. I choose to think of life experiences like that. So the more we have, well you know, the more colorful and flavorful we are - we are not just plain ol' boring vanilla yogurt:banana
  25. My 2 week post op diet basically consisted of 4 things. Cream of Wheat for Breakfast. sugar free Jello for lunch. Greek yogurt for dinner. Premier Protein shakes in between meals. I was only eating 1-1.5 ounces of anything per meal. I was lucky to drink any more than 1 Protein shake (30 grams of protein) per day for the first week. I sipped on Water constantly, but was only getting in about 40 ounces a day for at least a week. I just wasn't hungry and nothing really sounded good, but my nutritionist said it was important to eat something and try to get my protein and fluids in, so that it what I did. For Vitamins I use TwinLab Bariatric chewable vitamins and TwinLab Bariatric Chewable Calcium. They aren't the greatest tasting things in the world, but they aren't terrible either. I get them both on either Amazon or from Swanson Vitamins, depending on availability when I need them. They seem to be frequently out of stock on both sites. I think the important thing to remember the first 2 weeks is that it will probably be a struggle to get in your fluids and protein, but it does get easier. Just do what you can do and don't worry about it too much!
